Rowan had been spending more nights out and less time at home lately, And Prom only gave her another reason to stay out late.
After the dance, most of the seniors drifted down to the Copperdale docks, the party trailing into the early hours. A few lit cigarettes glowed in the dark as the group thinned out.
" You could always crash at my place, " Molly said, flicking ash into the sand. " I'll drive you back in the morning… It'll give you some time to cool off. "
For a moment, she thought about saying yes. The idea of a quiet place to crash sounded nice. But Rowan just sighed, dropped the cigarette, and crushed it into the sand with her heel.
" I better not, " she mumbled. " Avoiding an awkward conversation would probably just make things worse. "
Rowan didn’t hate her mom, not enough to stay away for good. They just lived differently and whenever they got in a fight a little distance to breathe was all they needed.
Rowan turned to leave, calling back over her shoulder,
" We still on to study this week for the final? "
" Yeah! You sure you don't wanna grab dinner with Yuki and me first? Maybe hit the next juice joint after? That way you’re not walking home alone! " Molly called out.
" Nah! " Rowan shouted back with a grin. " Gotta hit the books! I just know those finals are gonna be brutal. "
**TW BLOOD/VIOLENCE BEYOND THIS POINT**
Rowan was only a few blocks from her apartment when the rain started. Hoping to stay dry, she cut through the nearby apartment buildings, thinking it’d save her some time.
She never saw him coming. One second she was alone, the next she was grabbed from behind, his hand over her mouth, arms locking her in place. Pain stabbed into her neck then flowing down her shoulders.
She thrashed as much as she could but he wouldn’t let go. She did the only thing she could do to try and get her mouth free, and bit down on his thumb as hard as she could, ignoring the large gulps of his blood in her mouth.
When he finally let go, he was gone in an instant.
Rowan collapsed onto the wet concrete, gasping for air, her chest on fire. She wanted to run and call out for help but everything felt heavy.
