We’ve all been there at one point or another. You know when the point when you come across a new word or acronym in the rpc. I want to give you an alternative to using deductive reasoning to figure it out. So I’ve taken the the time to define 146 rp terms which can be found HERE. List of RP terms! (Feel free to add your own)

I’ve had people ask me about these in the past, and decided to write as much as I can remember, thanks to my tired brain. If I forgot any, don’t hesitate to add to it!

Mun/Mod - The person who runs the blog, and roleplays the character Muse - The character being played Mutual - A blog who you follow, and they follow you back IC - In Character, or when you are writing as your character OOC - Out of Character, or when you as the mun/mod are speaking. NOT to be confused with “OC”. NSFW - Abbreviation of Not Safe For Work, used primarily for gorey and sexual themes. OC - Original Character. A character you have created yourself (not to be confused with OOC) Canon - Something that pertains to the characters/story/setting/etc of a given fictional world/series/game/etc Metagaming - Having your character know information that they shouldn’t through OOC means.  Godmodding - Playing as another person’s character during roleplay. Extremely frowned upon. Ship - A pairing between two characters, or a “Relationship” Fandomless - A character (usually an OC) that does not belong to any set fandom. Independent - A rp blog that is not associated with any roleplay groups. Affiliated - A rp blog that is associated with a roleplay group. Private - A rp blog that will only rp with mutuals. Non-Private - A rp blog that is completely open. Non-Selective - A blog who will rp with anyone. Semi-Selective - A blog that is slightly picky about who they rp with/follow back Selective - A blog that is a bit more picky about who they rp with/follow back Highly Selective - A blog who is very picky about who they rp with/follow back Bio/About Page - A page on your blog that gives information about your character, primarily used for OCs. Highly encouraged for OCs to have an about page. Rules Page - Self explanatory; A page on your blog for rules. Thread - A series of posts that contribute to a rp storyline with your rp partner.

LIST OF COMMON RP TERMS FOR REFERENCE;

RPC = ‘roleplay community’. A basic acronym that is not specific to tumblr. Other sites such as twitter also have a RPC of their own.

RP = ‘roleplay’. It’s basically collaborative fanfic. One person makes a post with their character saying something, someone else reblogs with their own muses response.

SFW = ‘safe for work’. This refers to content that’s generally ‘tame’ and doesn’t involve stuff like intense violence or sex, basically.

NSFW = ‘not safe for work’. This refers to content that’s not exactly rated E for everyone. This can range from simply violent content or smut content. ‘NSFW RP’ does often broadly refer to ‘smut rp’, however.

TW = ‘trigger warning’. People often tag certain things, most commonly things like blood, bugs, or other things that may trigger episodes from people who are sensitive to it, even if it’s just in text form. these are often tagged as ‘trigger tw’ or ‘trigger //’ by the community.

Starter = A post of a character doing something. Can either be specifically made for someone, or be open for anyone to reply to.

IC = ‘in character’, often specifying that a muse is just doing their usual thing.

OOC = ‘out of character’. self explanatory. 

Canon = Material that is seen in the ‘source material’ of a character. Can be as simple as someone ‘canonically having black hair’.

Canon divergency = Material that ‘diverts’ from canon. 

Headcanon = Stems from canon divergency, but basically specific canon that a mun makes for their muse. 

Mun = the person who’s behind the blog. Basically means ‘mod’.

Muse = the character(s) the mun depicts. 

OC = ‘original character’. A character specifically made by the mun and has their own canon. Can be involved in canon material (example: Sonic OCs).

FC = face claims. several muses have face claims that may not fully reflect how they look like, but it’s often close enough for iconning purposes. 

Mutuals = When one mun follows one mun and the mun follows back, creating a mutual following.

Musings = Text / images that often apply to muses in one way or another.

Crack RP = ooc / not canon interactions. Often made to ‘crack jokes’.

M!A = ‘Magic anon’. Anons that are sent to affect a muse for a short of prolonged amount of time. Not all blogs accept these, but some do request them from time to time.

RPC group = Closed groups that often involve submitting muse applications so you can interact with other people in the group with specific circumstances. Think of kind of a gated neighborhood in a sense.

Indie = Not affiliated with any RPC group, generally open to any interactions.

Drabble = Often very fanfic-esque posts that focus on developing / building upon specific muse(s).

Icon = an often 100x100 image of someone’s muse used to add a bit more to a reply. 

Multimuse = A blog that consists of more than 1 muse, either from a variety of fandoms or just several muses from the same fandom.

AU = ‘Alternate universe’. Often involves putting characters from one series into another and adjusting their canon to fit into the different series. Can also be generally different scenarios (evil AUs, coffee shop AUs, etc)

Shipping = Creating romantic interactions between two characters. Common fandom term.

Multishipping = Shipping the same muse with several different other ones but only one at a time is ‘canon’. This means that a character can have as many relationships as they would like, as each one is in a different universe and none of the partners know of the others’ existence in anyway, shape, or form. 

Mary Sue / Gary Stu = Outdated terms that should not be used to ‘critique’ OCs or any character for that matter in this day and age.

The length of RP Thread replies will be multi-para

The length of Ask replies depends solely on how my characters would answer it -- Some responses may also be in the form of drawings or little comics

Any muse used in an RP Thread or Ask will be tagged as #IC || *Muse's Name*

My Discord is for Mutuals Only

I don’t always use flair — If I do use icons, banners, etc. it’s because I think it will fit the reply or starter

I have a few disabilities that make writing & reading difficult. Because of this, everything I write is put into a few programs to check for errors, but not everything is perfect. If you come across a typo, spelling error, or grammatical error, please let me know! I want to make sure that what I am writing is legible, and I will not take offense if it is pointed out. Rules/Terms:

You must be 21+ to interact with me -- no exceptions

Please do not respond to/reblog closed starters if you are not a part of that thread

If Dark themes are mentioned, they will be tagged properly

Any NSFW will be tagged as # NSFW -- I am also open to Fade To Black (FTB)/Timeskipping

Please try to use proper capitalization, punctuation, etc. -- I need things to be legible as I have difficulty reading text at times

Thread replies need to be at least three (3) paragraphs -- I am looking to write with those who write multi-para

Do not Godmod, metagame, etc. -- I will only give a few chances before dropping a thread if this happens

If a month goes by with no activity on a thread and I do not hear from you I will drop the thread.

This is a major boundary of mine due to trauma. Let me know if you are no longer interested in writing together. Life happens, people lose interest, and it is perfectly ok to need to step away. I understand that people get busy or need to focus on other things, and I will never be upset with you for needing to step away for any reason. I am making it clear now — DNI with me if you ghost

Hey helpers! I have a really -kinda foolish- question. Are you ready? I’m following you guys for a while just for seeing faceclaims or gifpacks or name ideas. But i have no idea what are faceclaims for? I don’t even have a slightest idea where are all these stories? (I assume they’re stories?) are they fanfics? Are they roleplays? Please illuminate me 😅💓

faceclaims are basically just the face that you imagine your character to have! it’s basically like fancasting but in the context of roleplay, a lot of people are fancasting for their original characters rather than already existing ones. although people do play canon characters with different faceclaims from the original source materials. hope that makes sense!

Sorry if this is too obvious/has been asked before but what are talk tags? I’ve been away from rps for a few years and I’m a bit lost with some of the terms in English and some of the new formats, I gues

omg don’t u worry anon , apparently talk tags have been around for years and i have learned about them literally within the past month, but i guess they have become more popular! 

i’ve also never participated in one personally , but to my understanding they are a tag claimed by a group where interested members of the rpc can introduce themselves to each other before an rp opens , post character development things + track interest on a certain character! for example rpg:talk or rpg:chat , admins usually post fun ooc questions and prompts in them!

For the nonnie wondering about the 5 year + rule, it's for the Faceclaims. It's just to make sure the characters and FCs aren't too far apart in age because a lot of people don't want 30 year olds playing teenagers and teenagers playing 30 year olds, etc. I've noticed that it's usually different in most RPs but a lot ask players to keep their character's age within 5 - 6 years of the FC.
