Chapter 7: Don't Cry Mommy
{Kids}: Elise Lore- 4
Everyone worries that they aren’t going to be a good parent, but for Minerva, it was much worse. She was raised in an abusive home where the only thing that mattered was strength. When she was only a kid her mother left saying it was her fault. After that, her father worked her non-stop and trained her into being able to kill without hesitation. Thankfully it has been years since he died and she can now live a life where she helps others, but that hasn’t stopped her from having nightmares about her past.
She sat at the table, her head in her hands as she cried. At hearing the creaking of the floorboards she expected to turn and see Rufus, her husband, but instead, she met the big green eyes of her daughter. Minerva quickly whipped away her tears and smiled at the four-year-old.
“What are you doing out of bed Elise?” Minerva asked, picking up the little girl and setting her on her lap.
“There’s a scary monster in my room and you’re the best monster fighter I know.” Elise explained as she clung to her mother for protection.
“Well I guess I have to fight a monster so you can go back to sleep,” Minerva said, carrying the small child back to her room. The territory mage set her daughter on the bed, turned on the light, and ‘fought’ the monster that turned out to actually be a bunch of dress-up clothes on the bookshelf.
“Alright there are no more monsters and it’s time to go to sleep,” Minerva said, trying to lay Elise down.
“Okay, but can I ask you a question?” Elise whined as she curled up under her blanket.
“Fine, one question.”
“Why were you crying? Did I do something wrong?” Minerva was at a loss of words, she didn’t want to lie to her daughter, that would go against everything she had taught her; but how was she supposed to explain to a child that her mother had crappy parents?
“No, you didn’t do anything, it’s just grown-up stuff,” Minerva finally answered. “And that was two questions.”
“Oh, sorry. Goodnight mommy, you’re the best,” Elise said, her eyes slowly closing.
“Goodnight sweetheart, I love you,” Minerva whispered before kissing her daughter’s forehead and leaving the room.
