I think an underrated gag people don’t talk about enough is poking fun at the Doctor for certain attributes related to their current face:

With Eccleston it was the ears.

Tennant being a skinny boi.

Matt, it was the chin.

Capaldi was the eyebrows.

I’ve gotta say… I surprisingly really enjoyed how Mark Waid took one of my favorite running gags from the classic Stan Lee & Jack Kirby Fantastic Four run, i.e. the Thing’s rivalry with the Yancy Street Gang, and effectively recontextualized it into an insightful analysis into the Human Torch’s childish behavior & hesitancy to accept adult responsibilities! When it’s revealed that Johnny actually the one secretly responsible for all of the hate prank mail Ben’s received from Yancy Street, Waid centers the issue around Johnny’s failure to take Ben’s feelings into consideration. While Johnny believed that he was simply engaging in childish pranks, he did not realize constantly sending sending Ben hate mail from what the latter believed to be his old neighborhood just served to reinforce his feelings of self-loathing as the Thing. And its this conflict which ingeniously serves as the foundation for Johnny character growth throughout the rest of Waid’s run, as the issue concludes with Susan Storm finally being fed up with her younger brother’s immature antics, forcing Johnny to work as the Chief Financial Officer at the Baxter Building for him to learn to take his responsibilities more seriously.

While I was initially hesitant to the idea of retconning the Thing’s classic rivalry with the Yancy Street Gang, Waid manages to do so in a way that not only honors the heart & tone of Lee & Kirby’s original stories, but also allows for additional depth & development to both Ben Grimm & Johnny Storm’s characters, as well as theirdynamic with each other!

Even if this joke will never not be funny to me, I have to concede that it was always a justified use. Except against Lyon (lmao wtf, purely emotional but dumbest move ever).

Deliora ? With all we knew at that time it was legit. Deliora was a menace, Ul had the level of a wizard saint and couldn't do sh*t against it. It was a miracle her spell weakened Deliora during those 10 years. Seeing this monster, who destroyed his village killed his parents and his teacher, being set free and roaming the earth once more, plus having all his best friends on the island stuck with it ; was a fairly understandable situation to crashout for Gray

Silver ? Once again, Deliora, plus Gray wasn't really gonna use it, it was a bait.

Zeref. Well, if this spell was meant to be useful one day I honestlty can't see against whom it would be better than against Zelef ( maybe Acnologia ? ). Zelef himself was a bit afraid because it was basically like a checkmate by sacrificing one of your rooks but without even knowing you had one to begin with (thanks to the Lost attribute)
