(Contains spoilers for the magicians books and show)
I might never forgive The Magicians for what it did to the Chatwin Family in adapting them from books to TV. In the books we have, from oldest to youngest:
Martin: physically active and interested in everything you'd expect a 1910s teenage boy to like. while the oldest he's still too young for the army
Helen: defended Martin no matter what even though she loved scolding the rest of her siblings
Rupert: few interests besides books, always being picked on by Martin
Fiona: was quite bold, first Chatwin to mention fillory while on earth (which ember and umber had forbidden)
Jane: only 5 when her siblings discovered fillory but mostly unchanged for the show.
additionally Rupert and Fiona worshiped the Christian God while on earth and the rams while in fillory, but the other three only worshiped the rams. also they were living with their aunt to get away from London during ww1 and met Plover because he was her neighbour.
The show on the other hand gave us these three:
Eldest sibling military man Rupert (why is he at Plover's house at the height of ww2, he should be in the trenches) and younger twins Jane and Martin. the boys' personalities and ages were completely swapped and the other two sisters were completely deleted. the same Helen Chatwin who was so zealous in her worship of Ember and Umber that she caused a religious schism that broke apart their family and hid the buttons Jane was given because they were blasphemy no longer exists. and their aunt Maude is gone too, they just live with Plover and two random children with no reason given.
and to top it all off, the show kills Jane. her book counterpart survives and retires.
i will however thank the show for giving much more weight to the abuse Martin suffered than the one off hand mention the books had.
