I had a heartbreaking revelation about Cars (my obsession)

Doc didn't teach Lightning all of the tricks we see in Cars 3 because if he taught him too early, the inevitable rookies would analyze his racing style and be quicker than Lightning from the Get-go.

The plan was to wait until the rookies started to take over, and THEN teach him those tricks so he could prolong his career as much as possible if Lightning wanted.

Doc never thought about the possibility of not being there for his boy.

But Lightning found Smokey and learned from the man that taught Doc everything he knows.
