Yang and Blake are actually fairly similar in the Beacon Arc but they go about things differently. They both have a wall up they don’t want people to look behind.
Blake’s is her being closed off and short with people, if she pushes them away eventually they’ll stay away. She’s the ‘bookish quiet’ person who clearly has walls up and doesn’t want people to get close, walls her team push past. And they prove to her over time she can be open with them.
Yang is also closed off, but her mask is to be loud and happy, not quiet and reserved. If she’s smiling and laughing in the middle of the group, nobody will notice theres more going on underneath (she even fooled some of the audience). Just like Blake, her team pushes past and sees underneath and proves she can be vulnerable with them.
Blake is scared of people close to her being hurt, Yang is scared of people close to her leaving, but they’re both scared to let people close. They both hide parts of themselves to keep their hearts safe. They just have completely opposite ways of doing it.
A/N: Freezerburn hurt/comfort, set in a loose AU where they finished their full time at Beacon. Chapter 4/5, link to next part at the bottom. In this one, Yang misunderstands, and Weiss just wants more.
Chapter Three is right here.
Breakfast had always been a loud, energetic time at Beacon… or maybe that was just a side-effect of Yang’s table. Between Yang’s jokes, Ruby and Yang’s little arguments and debates, Jaune - and, thus, his friends - joining them fairly often, and even the occasional autograph-seeker for Pyrrha or Weiss, their table had always been full of laughs, fights, or, if nothing else, noise.
That was, until the spring of their last year. Suddenly, their eyes were on the clock more often, the conversations a little more distracted, things left unsaid under every sentence. They begin trying to hold on to every second, reticent to let it slip between their fingers.
But then again...
Weiss watches as Yang gives the others a significant look and they all begin heading out, talking about classes to get to and future roommates to talk to.
Maybe she was just projecting.
“Babe,” Yang starts, her voice quiet and soft, and it stings at the corners of Weiss’ eyes. “Can we-”
“I can’t right now,” Weiss says, using a glyph to boost herself to her feet without thinking about it. “Need to speak to Professor Goodwitch.”
“Yeah, okay,” Yang says, her gaze hot on Weiss’ back. “After?”
Weiss disappears around a door before she can ask again, taking a shaky breath.
/
Yang’s voice reaches her, and she smiles… at first.
“-and you know, Ruby’s planning on moving back to Patch, so I might-” Yang turns, still mid-conversation with Nora, and Weiss’ heart isn’t sure whether to jump or sink when their eyes meet. “Hey, Weiss, one sec-”
She walks past Yang, forcing the dread and sadness in her chest deep down. “Sorry, restroom!” she says, not giving Yang a chance to leave her conversation and come with.
She already knew the conversation that was coming.
The one they’d have to have, sooner rather than later.
The one she’d been dreading all year.
The one she couldn’t escape.
/
Calloused hands find hers, just when the afternoon light starts fading into twilight, and she turns from her book to see Yang looking down at her.
“Babe?” Yang says, too gentle, and Weiss feels the tears coming already. Even in public, just sitting on their usual bench, she feels the tears start.
It’s embarrassing, still, how easily Yang can slip through her defenses and make her show emotion she thinks she keeps hidden.
“I… need to shower,” Weiss says, pulling her hand free but disguising it by slipping a bookmark into her book.
“Weiss.” Yang tries, a bit more insistent, but she pretends not to hear, walking away.
“Do you think we’ll need more shampoo bef-” She swallows. “Nevermind, I just need to grab a towel and-”
“Partner,” Yang says, almost too quiet to hear, and Weiss stops in her tracks. “We gotta talk soon, you know?”
“Can…” Weiss swallows, turning to her, eyes not quite meeting Yang’s as her lip quivers. “Can I have a little longer, please? Just a few more days?”
“What?” Yang asks, stepping a bit closer. “Weiss, what do you- ohh, come on, hey...” Yang reaches for her hand again, and Weiss can’t make herself pull away. “It’s gonna be alright, okay?”
A gentle tug, and she’s in Yang’s arms, held close as she shakes. “You don’t know that.”
“I don’t,” Yang admits, stroking her back. “But hey, we can do it. We’ll be together, right?”
Everything stops. She’s silent, the tears coming to a slow halt, and Yang gives an awkward cough.
“We. Will be together, right?” Yang asks, soft. “I kinda assumed we would, but then you never talked about it and you’ve kinda been…”
“Avoiding you.” Weiss realizes, her heart not sure whether to soar or sink.
“Yeah,” Yang says, laughing without much joy, and Weiss tucks her head against her chest. “I got a small apartment set up in the city. Not a ‘walk there tonight’ kind of close, but…” She looks at Weiss, smiling beatifically. “It’s too small, rent’s way more than I wanted to pay by myself, and they said the dishwasher doesn’t work yet, but…”
“It’s ours?” Weiss offers, barely above a whisper, and Yang smiles.
“It’s ours.” She agrees, and Weiss buries her face in Yang’s sweater, smiling far too wide to let it be seen in public…
As Ruby and company find out just cause your trying to save the world doesn’t mean those who you think are helping really are.
Case in point Ironwood who goes to villain mode after mistrust tears what little reason he has away from him.
And with a maaaive army led by an immortal being of chaos incarnate at your doorstep the question of who is trustworthy quickly becomes more and more blurred.
Though Penny and Winter do have the years best and most unexpected moment.
