Other than some late night crew walking around attending to their duties, and creaks and groans of some of the older metal parts as they drifted through space, the ship was quiet.
The auto-pilot was on, defenses were on stand-by, and the night guards were patrolling around. Somewhere on the south side of the ship a group of friends were up drinking in one of the lounging areas, but they were far away from the rooming area.
Other than that, there was only one non-night crew member who was walking down the halls. Yoyo Gallilo needed no protection from the cold air, completely used to it and at home. He wore his singlet and shorts, enjoying the feeling of the freezing steel floors touching the bottom of his bare feet.
He hadn't far to walk, arriving at his destination after only a quick two minute walk. He wished it was shorter. He wished his room was located right next to this one. Sometimes he wished he shared this room with his friend.
Without knocking, without needing to, he typed in the pin code Ryder had given him to open the sliding doors. It was dark inside, save for a single light coming from the silhouette of Ryder's bed. Illuminated by it, Yoyo could clearly see his friend's face.
Ryder glanced up over his shoulder, completely unfazed by Yoyo’s arrival. He hadn't even flinched when he heard the pin code being entered from the other side. Anyone who knew the code to his room was someone he trusted, and there was only one person that would come in at this hour.
“Welcome,” Ryder said, grinning.
Yoyo smiled back. He ran over to the bed and crawled on top of it to lie down next to his friend. Ryder had cocooned himself in his blankets and made a nest of pillows, but Yoyo was perfectly content without the warmth.
“What are you doing?” Yoyo asked. He saw a device in Ryder's hand, a device that he had once been told was called a “video camera”. He had seen devices similar to it over the years of being away from home, but no matter how many times Ryder or his dad, Al – or anyone for that matter – tried to explain it to him, he could never grasp it. But from what he understood, it could capture memories somehow and replay them. Ryder told him they were called videos. Yoyo thought it was neat, just as he thought almost every piece of tech on the ship was neat. Yoyo loved it whenever Ryder would direct the camera towards him, capturing a small version of him in the box. He liked the idea of Ryder being able to carry him around like that. It felt comforting.
“Just watching some old videos,” Ryder answered Yoyo's question. Yoyo moved closer to Ryder, resting his chin on the other man's shoulder to see what was being played.
The video showed a stage a while away, with four performers on them. Yoyo recognised those guys. Ryder had posters of them all over his walls. He also had stacks of what were apparently called vinyls and CDs in a corner of the room, that could be played and produce music. They were an Earth band, Yoyo knew.
“Are those the guys you like?” Yoyo asked.
Ryder nodded. He pointed to a small blurry figure that was prancing around the stage. “That one’s Freddie.”
“Who took this one?” Yoyo asked, referring to who was holding the camera.
Sure enough, the camera panned around to face a large man standing to the left of whoever was recording. Yoyo recognised him as Al – a much younger Al. Al was singing along to the song the band was playing, one Yoyo recognised but couldn't remember the name of. He noticed the camera on him and grinned at it. A second later, an arm went around his shoulders and the camera turned around fully to show the videographer. Yoyo recognised her as well, though not as well.
Ryder nodded. “This was in 1983 I think,” he explained. “This was the first and only chance my mum and dad got to see Queen live. I think it was close to their three year anniversary or something and they went as a date.”
“Did you ever get to see them?”
Ryder laughed slightly. “Hell, no. Freddie died before I was even born. And the rest of them are all dead now. They were on the half of Earth that was vaporised.” He didn’t bother explaining to Yoyo that even if Freddie had been alive at the same time as him, Ryder was only a baby when half of the planet was destroyed, so either way he wouldn’t have been able to see them.
“Yeah, I know. It sucks.”
“Would you want to see them?”
“Yeah. But the only things I have are a few live albums and a dvd of one of their concerts that my dad grabbed before we had to leave.”
Yoyo and Ryder kept watching the video together. Yoyo, wanting something to hold onto, wrapped his arms around Ryder's waist as best he could with the blankets in the way and continued to rest his head on his shoulder. He squinted his eyes at the small screen. The light was beginning to hurt his eyes and give him a headache.
“How come the big lights are off?” He asked. The camera light would be a lot easier to concentrate on if it wasn't the only source of light in the room.
“They went out,” Ryder explained. “I’ll change them tomorrow. And probably get some people to check around with the rest of the lights to make sure they're all good.” He was ready to go back to focusing on the video, when he noticed Yoyo’s uncomfortable expression. Realisation dawned on him.
“Oh that's right,” he said quietly. He switched off the camera and placed it gently on the table beside his bed.
Ryder turned to face Yoyo, but his eyes hadn’t adjusted to the darkness yet and he could only barely make out his friend’s silhouette. “Because it was hurting your eyes. We can watch them another time. And I’m tired anyway.”
“Yup,” Ryder replied, getting comfortable in his nest of pillows and blankets.
Yoyo settled in next to him, but remained on top of the blankets instead of under them. He was getting better at handling hotter temperatures, but he wasn’t sure if getting in bed next to Ryder and burying himself with that much warmth all night would be a good idea. Ryder’s body heat wasn’t a problem though – it never was. He wasn’t sure why. All he knew was that normal heat and high temperatures could make things difficult for him, but body heat from people he was close to didn’t. He didn’t mind though. It meant he could get as clingy as he wanted to with Ryder and not have to worry about overheating again.
Yoyo stayed awake a while longer, clinging onto Ryder and listening to his deep, even breaths as he slept. He stared into the darkness of the room, taking in all the outlines and details of objects and furniture scattered around the place. Ryder had once told him that he had incredible night vision – better than everyone on the ship. Yoyo always thought everyone could see like that in the dark, until Ryder pointed out to him that because his home planet was naturally dark, his eyes were better adjusted to the night, but found the light more difficult
Eventually, he fell asleep too, thinking about the next day. Ryder had promised to show him some of the knowledge that came with flying and piloting the ship and he was looking forward to it. Even though Ryder had told him he most likely wouldn’t be able to fly it himself, he was still excited to watch his best friend work and spend time with him. Unconsciously, his hand sought out Ryder’s beneath the blankets and he held it tightly.
Unbeknownst to him, Ryder squeezed his hand back.
This is a short little thing I wrote which includes two characters from a book series I am planning on writing one day.
For a bit of context without giving too much away (although I doubt anyone would care that much), it is set in space on Ryder's ship. They're basically mercenaries known as Roamers (that may change), as they just roam around space and wait for someone to give them a job. It is pretty much inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy but I'm probably going to change some things and come up with some more original ideas so it doesn't feel like I'm just straight up ripping those movies off (even though they weren't my original inspo).
Yoyo is from an ice planet who joined their crew at one point and him and Ryder became best friends. Yoyo isn't the smartest. They don't have a romantic relationship (Ryder is aroace), but Yoyo does have a bit of a crush on him and they have a very homoerotic relationship.
