I’m so sorry but the minute I read this ask I immediately thought of this and I couldn’t get it out of my head 😭
There is a simple formula with which, in my opinion, you can create a good dynamic of rivalry / enmity: you need to take two characters similar to each other and put them on different sides of the barricades.
For example, Viggo and Hiccup are great intellectuals and good strategists, they know how to think through moves in advance and can easily anticipate the actions of the enemy. Their similarities make them equal, and equality is the main basis of rivalry. It is equality that creates such an amazing dynamic of enmity between Viggo and Hiccup.
Astrid considers Viggo her main enemy, and this is understandable – Viggo is a great threat to Berk and dragons. But Viggo and Astrid are out of each other's league. Astrid thinks standardly and straightforwardly, like a real Viking. She lacks careful thought and planning to be on an equal footing with Viggo Grimborn. The ideal enemy for Astrid can only be someone who is equal to her in many ways.
What about Ryker?
They are both strong, hardy and have honed combat skills. In battle, they prefer to use brute force more than to think through complex clever tactics. They are both second in command, but capable of leadership. They have a great protective instinct towards those whom they consider “their own”.
Summary: Ryker's been hiding something from Viggo. It's why Caldor kidnapped him in the first place. Now that Viggo's back and is getting his memories back in flashes, it's only right Ryker tell him the truth.
Ryker sat down beside Viggo on his bed. He'd told him everything. Everything about how he and Caldor knew each other and why Caldor had kidnapped him. Viggo's memories were starting to come back and he was beginning to ask questions he knew Ryker could answer. Questions about Caldor specifically. The damn psychopath told Viggo as much as he possible could without giving anything away what it was they did. Ryker had to be the one to tell him. Ryker couldn't let Viggo hear it from Caldor. Not again.
"Viggo, there's something we need to talk about."
The brothers sat there for what felt like forever to Ryker. When in reality it had only been less than an hour. Viggo listened confusingly but didn't say a word as Ryker talked. By the time the older Grimborn finished he was crying. He waited for Viggo to say something. To comfort him, but he never did. Ryker looked Viggo in the eyes hoping to see any sign of understanding. Instead all Ryker saw were his brothers cold, distant, and full of anger. Ryker reached his hand out to out a hand on Viggo's shoulder. Only Viggo pulled away.
"Viggo I-"
"Get out."
Ryker felt his heart and stomach drop. Viggo looked away and no matter what Ryker did, Viggo refused to look him in the eyes.
"What... ?"
"I said get out!" yelled Viggo as loudly as he could. Ryker gasped in shock as Viggo roughly pushed him off the bed.
"I hate you!" screamed Viggo "I never want to see your face again! You're not my brother! You're a monster!"
Ryker felt a sob bubbling in the back of his throat as Viggo threw anything he could get ahold of at Ryker. Viggo hated him, and now he would never forgive him.
