The R Word is a sono essay composed by student, Rachel Cusumano. Due to the subject matter of sexual violence the composer has decided to list a trigger warning along with this essay.
The essay depicts the struggle Rachel goes through as she attempts to get to class. Though the present struggle is to get to class, Rachel flashbacks to an event from year priors that contributes to her present anxieties. Through present day thoughts, and memories of past events captured by diary entries, Rachel conveys her survival of a rape to the listener. The listener is taken on a journey along with Rachel. Rachel’s message begins with anxieties but eventually unravels to a more pessimistic perspective as Rachel declares her willingness to recover from this event. Sources Cited: Kabat-Zinn, J. (1994).
