agh im realizing i forgot to post that bit of m&m meta about accidental murder... anyway, my call is gonna be that squire badger and the rest of his family were killed by different people. 

either squire badger was gonna fake his death but got killed accidentally via lightning and electroshock, and then the rest of the family did get murdered by fletcher cottonbottom,

or squire badger got murdered, possibly by lars and sylvester, probably by fletcher, and then the rest of the family faked their deaths.

either way, sylvester was meant to take the fall for one or both.
