Got a bit inspired by the Wolfman for this one.. poor kid.
Given that saber-teeth evolved multiple times in many distantly related groups, but particularly among the cats, I wonder if the typical cat hunting method, stalking prey and killing it by suffocation, lended itself very well to the evolution of saber-teeth. Which would aid in severing the trachea and several critical blood-vessels. Just a thought.
