Greater Sooty Owl

Scientific name: Tyto Tenebricosa

Commonly found: New Guinea, South-Eastern Australia

Size: 41-50 cm (female) or 37-43 cm (male)

Greater Sooty owls are among the largest in the barn owl family, the females weighing up to 1.2kg, and are nocturnal. They have a call similar to the shriek of the red tailed hawk (think every bald eagle noise in anything ever) consisting of a long piercing shriek lasting a few seconds. Their diet consists of gliders, bandicoots, rodents and occasionally bats, smaller birds and insects. Sooty owls tend to stay in one area for most of their adult lives and are territorial.

I have been getting back into the swing of things and found myself in a rut when drawing Jay. It has been so long since I have been able to draw her and I found that my old design didn't feel like "me" any more. It was young, spunky, thin and just a very young me (which I was when I first designed her). So, I went to the drawing board and worked out this one. I feel like this just suits me more. Im not a thin teen any more, I have had a baby and a lot of life experience under my belt. This me is still silly and weird, but she has mellowed down and finds comfort in herself.

Jay is very dear to my heart as she came to life when I met my husband before I even knew he was my husband
