RWBY: The Cotta-Arcs Allusion
Now onto our sapphic family, Saffron and Terra Cotta. They both share the same allusion, representing the famous Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos.
Sappho is regarded as THE symbol of female on female desires, being a lesbian herself. The terms sapphic and lesbian were coined from her name and her homeland. Saffron’s name comes from Sappho’s.
Sappho’s work has been documented in multiple methods, the most popular being pottery. The name of this particular type of pottery comes from the process needed to make it; heating up soil and mending it. They are referred to as “cooked earth” which formulated the term “terracotta”. Yeah.
But wait, there’s more. Ironically, Sappho was engaged to Cercylas, who was from the land of Andros. Andros may have inspired the name for Adrian, the son Cotta Arcs, and the only male in the family. And the fact that they’re a part of the Arc family. Arc translates to rainbow. So basically the Cotta Arcs literally just allude to “lesbian”. But hey they’re happy so🏳️🌈
