Ok but hear me out because this has been the biggest theory of mine forever and it sounds stupid but just listen
Unlike in previous generations, where it was clearly mentioned Ash was going to the next region (”Next Time, A New Beginning” or something like that at the end of the last episode), there was no implication as to where he was going next in X&Y (”And To Our Own Way”). In fact, he actually said he was going to Kanto to start from square 1. This would explain why he is almost an expert when it comes to training and battling in Kalos, but not the strongest so far in Alola. There hasn’t been any nod to past generations (besides tiny little easter eggs to make the fans chuckle, but I’m talking more like Ash explicitly saying something about his past friends) so far, and I don’t see one happening any time soon (especially in the 20th movie) so that’s what’s made me think Alola comes before Kalos.
