Ok but Sammy hearing Ben sing "Can You Hear Me" and Hurting™
Words: 4,380 Sam x Reader Warnings: None really! A/N: SURPRISE! This is the first part of a new Sammy series! I think it will be around 4 parts, but last time I said that Mess Is Mine happened so... I just won't guess this time. I'm working on like 8 other stories right now, but this one refused to go away unless I put it down. Based on this imagine .
Your name: submit What is this?
Your sister and Dean were arguing about who had won the last game of poker, a fairly frequent occurrence during your weekly game night. You were startled to find that Sam was already looking at you when you looked up from stacking the cards back into the game case. It sent a jolt like an electric-tinged chill up your spine. The best you could do back was to smile at him briefly and tear your eyes away.
“Well, I’m heading to bed I think,” your sister said, yawning and stretching. She stood and wrapped her arms around Sam’s neck from behind, leaning in close to give him a kiss. “Are you coming to bed?” she asked him pointedly.
Your stomach tightened into a knot. “’Scuse me,” you said with a forced smile. You gathered a few empty bottles and glasses and exited for the kitchen abruptly.
Once there all you could do was lean over the sink, white-knuckling the edge of the counter, trying to think of anything but what you actually were thinking of… Footsteps behind you jolted you into action. You blasted the water on and grabbed the soap and a sponge.
“Relax. It’s just me,” Dean said.
You dropped the pretense of washing the dishes and spun to face him where he was leaning against the table giving you a knowing look. “Y/N…” he started.
“Don’t.”
“But? But?! My sister, Dean! My sister! How could I do that to her?” you demanded. “I can’t. I can’t do that.” You couldn’t meet Dean’s eyes.
He let out a heavy sigh. “Then you’re going to be stuck just where you are now. Wouldn’t you rather regret going for it than sitting back and not trying?”
You glared at him. “I think I’d regret ruining my relationship with the one blood relative I have left.” There was a tense silence that stretched far longer than was comfortable before you finally broke it. “I’m going to bed… Tell them goodnight for me.”
“Wait,” Dean called after you.
“Goodnight, Dean.” You hugged him, long enough for him to sigh heavily again and plant a kiss on the top of your head.
“Goodnight…” he murmured, and then you were gone with a soft padding of stocking feet.
Dean wandered back out into the library to find Sam still sitting at the table, a fresh glass of something in front of him. “Isn’t that like your fourth nightcap?” Dean asked.
Sam glowered at him momentarily. “Pot. Kettle. Black,” he said.
Dean pulled a face and shrugged. “Fair enough.” He poured himself a share of whiskey too and sat down across from his little brother. “Isn’t someone waiting for you?” Dean asked.
Sam’s jaw tensed. “Yeah, I–I told her I’d be in in a bit…” He hesitated and cleared his throat a little awkwardly. “…Where’s Y/N?”
Dean was just about ready to scream. “Bed. Told me to tell you ‘goodnight.’”
“Oh… okay.” Sam drank deeply from his glass, nearly draining it.
Dean raised his eyebrows at his little brother. “Something you want to share with the class? Thoughts, maybe?”
Sam shook his head. “No.”
Dean left a beat of silence. “You know, you’ve been putting kind of a dent in my whiskey lately. You think I haven’t noticed? Am I supposed to just pretend that new bottle was 2/3 empty when I bought it.”
Sam shifted uncomfortably and gulped down the tightness in his throat to little effect.
“Sammy… come on. Talk to me. What the hell is going on in that long-maned head of yours?”
Sam shut his eyes for a moment and chewed his bottom lip. “I’m in love with Y/N,” he blurted out. “And it’s a mess. I’m with her sister. I’m dating her sister! And I’m love with Y/N.” There was something like anguish in his voice.
Dean stared across the table at Sam’s tortured expression. There was nothing to say to that.
“So, you know what? I’m taking a leaf out of your book and having a few nightcaps… that way when I wake up in the morning on the right side of the wrong bed, maybe I won’t care so much...” He downed the little remaining in his glass. “And I really can’t deal with a lecture from you right now, Dean, so just–just don’t. Night.”
Sam got up, leaving his empty glass behind, and stalked out.
“Jesus fu–am I living in the goddamn Twilight zone or some shit?! Didn’t I just have this conversation?!” Dean muttered aloud to himself. “There is not enough fucking whiskey in the world right now for this…” And with that he poured himself another.
_ _ _ _ _ _
You woke up very early, having gone to bed much before your usual time simply because you wanted to be unconscious… It seemed to be the only time you didn’t have that ache in your midsection and painful swirl of thoughts in your brain. You headed for the kitchen, looking forward to a hot cup of coffee and maybe some quiet self-reflection to stop your spinning. But you were surprised to find that you weren’t the only one awake despite the very early hour.
“Oh—” you let out a little surprised noise when you crossed the threshold and Sam looked up from his place at the center island.
“Y/N,” he said, his eyes a little surprised. He straightened up in his seat. “Hey.” He had passed some fitful portion of the night beside your sister and finally surrendered to insomnia. He had hoped that not lying next to her, feeling like a liar, would diminish his anxiety but it had proved to be mostly wishful thinking. He rubbed a hand anxiously over the back of his neck. “You’re up early,” he said.
“Yeah, umm… went to bed early so…” You smoothed a hand over your hair, quite sure that it was probably unruly from your tossing and turning all night. Sam loved that. “Coffee?” you asked. He jumped to his feet.
“Yeah. Of course. Let me get it for you,” he said.
“Oh, thanks.” Sam poured you a big mug of coffee from the pot and went to the fridge to grab some milk.
“You just take milk, right?” he asked, even though he knew the answer. He knew how you liked your coffee. He always knew what book you were reading. He knew your favorite color was seafoam. He knew you liked a gin and tonic with about an entire lime in it. He knew you liked whiskey and water, and dark beer, and the lavender-scented dryer sheets. He knew every little detail about you and he loved every single one.
“Yeah. Thank you,” you said. You accepted the mug from Sam and his fingers brushed yours as he handed it to you. You knew how cliché and stupid it was, but your heart still jumped at the contact. Is this what you would have to keep living on? A split second of Sam? You felt like a drug addict, sustaining only on the thought of the next high. You studied him as he sat down at the island again and you quickly noticed the dark circles under his eyes. “…Are you alright?”
Sam’s eyes flickered up to meet yours, startled a little by the question. God, how badly he wanted to answer truthfully. He wanted to tell you, No. I’m not alright. I’m not. I’m living a lie I don’t know how to get out of without ruining the path to what I really want. Instead he nodded. “Yeah,” he said, sipping his coffee. “Just a little tired.”
“Mmm. Trouble sleeping?” you asked, absently rotating your mug on the marble counter, warming your fingers. Seemed like you both had the same problem the previous night.
“Uhh—a little. But I’m okay,” he said, he tried to force a reassuring smile. He didn’t want to think about lying in bed next to your sister. It was the last thing he wanted to think about. “Thanks,” he said. “For asking though.”
You nodded. “Sure, of course.” A long moment of silence stretched and you were surprised that when you looked up, Sam’s eyes were already on your face, but he tore them away quickly and looked down into his mug. Your heart beat faster as you wondered at the meaning. You searched for something to say to him, something to bring his eyes back to yours. You could look into them forever—you always saw such understanding, such strength in them. And he was warm and funny and smart and kind… and this thinking made your stomach clench because you knew he was out of reach.
Sam cleared his throat and pushed down the sick feeling in his own stomach. “So, what’s on the schedule for today?” he asked.
You shrugged. “I dunno. I was thinking of working out later. Maybe kick Dean’s ass sparring,” you said, a small smirk gracing your face.
Sam let out a small laugh and shook his head. “That’d be good for him,” he said. But he felt a jealous twinge and a heat rising in his chest that he tried to ignore.
“How about you?” you asked. Sam shrugged.
“I don’t know… We’ll see. Maybe try and rustle up a case or something.” It was a classic method of distraction that Sam tried to use, even though it was only a temporary success. He would work, and work, and work. And it gave him an excuse to tell your sister he was busy, that he couldn’t take the time that day to spend with her doing something that he felt wasn’t genuine because all he could think about was doing it with you instead…
One corner of your mouth twitched upwards. “You work too much, Sam.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah… I know… but there’s always something else out there.”
“Exactly. There is always something else out there. And there always will be. So, you should take the time off when you can. Enjoy life a little,” you said, brave enough to meet his kaleidoscope colored eyes again.
Sam nervously chewed his bottom lip. He could be consumed by you instantly if he let himself—the way you were looking at him with that small smile and your eyes so bright, seeing only him in that moment. Reality reared its ugly head suddenly when footsteps started up the hallway and broke the temporary spell.
Your sister bounced into the kitchen. “Morning!” she said. She went over to Sam and ran a hand down his back affectionately, pecking him on the cheek. “I was a little bummed out to see your side of the bed empty this morning…” she said in a low voice to Sam.
You abruptly got up and headed across the kitchen to the pantry, feeling suddenly sick with envy and wanting to distance yourself as much as possible. You started pulling ingredients out just for the distraction and your sister was soon at your side. “Whatcha makin’?” she asked.
“Pancakes?”
“Sounds good. Better you make them than me. You remember what happened last time?”
You shook your head at her and laughed lightly at the last kitchen disaster. “Smoke. Everywhere. You shouldn’t even be allowed in the kitchen,” you teased her.
“I will never try again,” she said with a laugh. “I have no problem acknowledging my faults.” She bumped you with a friendly elbow. “Soooo…” she started. Her tone made you look up at her a little tentatively.
“…Oh, no. I know that tone. What is it?”
She grinned widely at you.
You raised your eyebrows at her. “What is it? Cough it up,” you said. “I can see you are plotting something…”
“Well, I was thiiiinking we should go out tonight. Get out of the bunker… You know, go into town… maybe go to that bar with the suuuuper hot bartender?” she said, wiggling her eyes at you.
You sighed. “I don’t know… I kind of just feel like staying in.” You didn’t know Sam was listening intently now from his place at the island still.
“You always feel like staying in! That’s why you have me to twist your arm and get you out of here before you turn into an old spinster who is in a serious relationship only with her books and tea kettle.”
You rolled your eyes. “Wow. Gee, thanks, sis…” you said sarcastically. “And you know what? That actually doesn’t sound too bad!”
This drew a laugh from her and she bounced on her feet a little. “Pleeeeease! Come on. You know once you’re out you will have a good time! And that bartender was totally into you last time.”
You looked at her eager expression and the excitement in her eyes. Maybe a night out would do you some good. You could definitely use a distraction and the bunker was somehow always haunted with Sam and your sister’s relationship… Reminders everywhere; that they shared a room and a bed together, that you could walk around any corner and find them kissing, or sitting closely, or whispering some secret conversation with secret smiles you weren’t privy to… “Alright. Fine,” you agreed. “But for like two beers and that is it!”
She pumped a fist in excited success. “Yes! Oh, I’m totally gonna pick out your outfit and everything. You’re gonna look hot,” she said.
You pointed vehemently at her. “No dresses!”
“But—”
“No! No dresses!” She pouted at you but relented.
“Fine… no dresses…”
“Dresses?” Dean said, coming to join the rest of you in the kitchen and peeking over your shoulder at the bowl you were dumping ingredients in. “Who’s wearing a dress?”
“No one!” you said loudly.
Dean grabbed a mug and poured in some coffee. “Why not? I’d love to see you in a dress, Y/N,” he said laughing gruffly. “Like, a short, tight little black cocktail dress… some high heels. Right, Sammy?” he asked, giving Sam a wink and drawing a very unamused stare from him. You gave Dean a scolding look and he relented.
“We’re going out tonight to Lucky’s,” your sister explained. “And I’m gonna pick out Y/N’s outfit and she is going to flirt with that hot bartender who was hitting on her last time.” You rolled your eyes.
“Ah,” Dean said. He chanced a glance at Sam and noted the muscle twitching in Sam’s jaw as he clenched his teeth. “I see.”
You turned to look at Dean. “You wanna spar later?” you asked him. God, you needed to work off some frustration and bitter jealousy…
He sipped casually at his coffee. “You wanna get your ass kicked later?” he asked, giving you a satisfied smug smirk.
You tilted your head and raised your eyebrows at him, a half-smirk on your face. God, Sam loved that expression, the playful spark in your eyes. “We’ll see, tough guy,” you said, turning back to the pancake batter.
_ _ _ _ _ _
A few hours later, you and Dean were both a little sweaty, circled up on the mat in the room you had converted to a work out area. You had your hands up and were seizing each other up, both with grins on your faces as you waited to see who would strike next.
“Give up yet, Winchester? By my count, you’re losing,” you goaded him. He laughed and wiped some sweat from his brow.
“You have gotten a lot better, Y/N. Must be because you have an amazing tutor,” he said with a gruff laugh. “And quite handsome at that!”
You rolled your eyes which was a mistake because Dean took that opportunity and swept your legs out from under you and you landed hard on your back on the mat, gritting your teeth a little as the breath was knocked out of you. Dean laughed hard as you let out a frustrated groan. Once you caught your breath, you accepted his proffered hand to help you back up. Sam came in just then as you were circling back up, ready for the next bout. Dean bounced lightly on the balls of his feet in the typical boxing shuffle, hands up in guard. “Sammy!” he yelled, seeing his brother come in. “Good. It will be nice to have someone else witness Y/N’s destruction—”
But just then you threw three punches at him and he had to scramble to block two of them. He wasn’t fast enough for the third and you landed a solid hit into his stomach, giving him a satisfied “HA!” and a wide grin.
“What’s that you were saying, Dean?” Sam called out, grinning, sitting down on one of the benches along the wall.
Dean shook it off and the two of you had an intense bout where you both gained ground on the other but were eventually blocked or fought it off. Finally, you sent a jab straight at Dean’s chin but he was able to block it and reroute your momentum, grabbing your arm and again sending you down to the mat. Just then as you were letting out a string of expletives and Dean was laughing heartily in victory, a cell phone rang.
“Oh, shit. That’s probably Garth. I gotta take that. I’m expecting him to call to today,” Dean said, heading over to the bench and grabbing his cell phone. He looked at Sam, whose gaze was fixated on you where you were lying on your back still in the middle of the mat, just resting for a minute and beating yourself up for letting Dean drop you. “Sammy, I’m tagging you in,” he said, giving him a wink.
“What?” Sam’s eyes went a little wide.
“I said you’re in. Hello? Yeah, hey Garth…” Dean stepped into the hall leaving Sam alone with you.
He gulped at the nervousness in his throat and stood up, walking out onto the mat. “Hey,” he said. “You okay?”
You sat up abruptly, a little surprised to see Sam appear over you so suddenly. “Yep. Fine.”
Sam offered you a hand and you felt butterflies flutter to life in your stomach as he pulled you up to your feet. Your hand stayed in his perhaps just a little too long.
Sam cleared his throat and looked down at you. “Uhh… Can I show you how Dean got you down?”
“Oh—yes. Please. I hate when he wins,” you said, giving Sam a small smile.
Sam anxiously rubbed the back of his neck as he stood in front of you. “Okay. Well, go into your guard stance,” he said. You obliged, stepping one foot slightly back and the other forward. “Good. Now, you want to use your lower body to propel that punch, but you need to be able to maintain your balance.” Sam squared up with you, pulling his hands up into guard. “So, just keep a little more weight on your back foot when you jab and propel yourself from your hips.” You nodded. “Okay, try it,” Sam said, holding a palm out. “Hit it, right here.”
You threw a jab at his palm, but he pulled back right before you connected and again you lost your balance and pitched forward toward him. “Whoa!” Sam laughed a little and caught you, his hands landing instinctively on your hips to stop your momentum. You both froze for a moment. You were still breathing fast from the physical exertion, but Sam was too, for an entirely different reason. Your hips felt small under his hands, and he could clearly feel their curve and angles. His heart was pounding and he felt a jolt of electricity zip up his spine. Perceiving that he should have let you go by now, his hands floated off you and he stepped backward. You anxiously chewed your bottom lip. There were tingles trailing behind where his hands had been. “Uhh—a little better, but you’re still taking too much weight off that back foot. Try again,” he said.
You both resumed your guard and Sam held a hand up again. This time you threw your jab and though he moved his hand back before you connected, you maintained you balance and immediately threw a cross punch which he had to block. A smile grew on his face and a matching one lit up yours. “Good! That was a really good!”
“Thanks,” you said, still squared up with him. You quickly threw a couple punches which Sam skillfully blocked and he returned—and that was it. You were full on sparring. Sam dodged one of your punches and you surprised him immediately with a high kick that caught him in the chest, knocking him off balance. But he was right back into it, now advancing on you and forcing you to give up ground. You waited for an opportunity to throw a combination at him but he somehow saw it coming and blocked it. The next second you skillfully swept a leg underneath him as he recovered from a block and he tumbled back onto the mat, landing hard but immediately starting to laugh. You stood over him with a wide grin on your face and walked over to look down at him. “Give?” you asked him.
His only response was to sweep one of his legs from where he was laying on the floor, taking you out at the ankles and sending you sprawling down on top of him. “Shit!” You landed with one arm extended to catch yourself on the floor and the other on his strong chest. Your body was pressed into him and you immediately felt your cheeks flush. You could feel his hips pressing into you. You lips were mere inches from his and you could see all the hues in his irises. He swallowed hard and there was a vague smile on his face.
Suddenly, you felt one of his hands landed ever so gently on your lower back and wow, electricity. “Give?” he joked, the vague smile still on his face, his eyes starry, his heart pounding. He couldn’t believe you were actually pressed against him and he wondered that you hadn’t immediately moved, climbed to your feet, put distance between the two of you. You felt paralyzed looking into his eyes.
“I give,” you said. Your voice was low and breathy because truthfully you couldn’t breathe, you were so startled by the whirling feelings and thoughts washing over you. Sam’s hand landing so lightly there on your lower back, it felt intimate.
But you suddenly heard the door open, and Dean stepped back into the room having gotten off the phone with Garth. The noise called you back to your senses and you leapt to your feet, anxiously backing away from Sam, but you weren’t quite fast enough. Dean had frozen a couple steps in and seen you on top of Sam—but he quickly pretended he hadn’t.
Sam cleared his throat and climbed to his feet, sweeping his hands back through his hair. “Good. Yeah, just… don’t let your guard down. Ever. Even once you have them on the ground.”
You were a little wide-eyed and you turned and headed for your water bottle and towel on the bench. Dean gave you a meaningful look as you approached but you just tore your eyes away from him.
“What did I miss?” he asked you in a low voice, his tone pregnant with meaning.
Sam watched from the center of the mat as you dabbed at your forehead and neck with your towel. “Nothing,” you said to Dean. “Just—training.”
“Mhmm…” Dean replied, a small smile tugging at his lips.
“Stop it.” Dean held his hands up in a sign of surrender. “Umm… I’m gonna go shower,” you said.
“Alright. Well, hey, I saw your sister in the hall. She wants to head out to the bar in like an hour and a half.” You nodded and quickly waved to Sam as you left the room, feeling your cheeks coloring again with a blush and hoping that your face was already red enough from the exercise to hide it.
“Thanks, Sam. Alright, I’ll see you guys in a bit…”
Dean noted that his brother’s eyes didn’t leave you until you disappeared through the door, which slammed and echoed in the space with an uncomfortable finality. Dean pressed his lips into a thin line and looked at his little brother. “So,” he said.
Sam frowned at him. “So, what?”
Dean shrugged and raised his eyebrows. “What exactly was that?” he asked, the gravel thick in his voice.
“What? Nothing. I just—we were sparring and—”
“Oh, you were sparring,” Dean repeated skeptically, crossing his arms over his chest. “Because when I came in it didn’t look like there was a lot of sparring going on as much as it looked like Y/N was on top of you and—”
“Stop.” Sam admonished.
“Sammy, come on. I spar with Y/N all the time and we have never ended up like that—”
Sam’s jaw clenched and he gave one last stern look to his older brother. “I’m just—just forget it. I’m gonna go get cleaned up and it sounds like you should too.”
“Sam! Sammy, come on,” Dean called after him, but Sam just waved him off and disappeared into the hall, leaving Dean to sigh heavily in frustration.

One of your greatest moments in life was when you said ‘I do’ to the greatest man you’ve ever known. You’ve spent 4 wonderful years with the love of your life until it crashed and burned to the ground. You’ve definitely had great moments with Sam Winchester, after all, you were thinking of having kids with the man.
However, where there are good things, there are bad ones and you just knew, towards the end of your marriage that things weren’t going to get better. You loved Sam with all your heart and that was never going to change, however, you didn’t think you two should be together.
It started off with the small things. You were a hunter and before you and Sam ever got together, you would hunt with the Winchesters. You were good at it, killing monsters left and right. It was one of the reasons Sam fell I love with you. Then, you two started dating and Sam got more protective over you.
You thought it was sweet at first. You didn’t want to see him get hurt either and would sometimes try and protect him. However, it got to the point where you couldn’t leave the Bunker without him asking you where you were going. You tried to brush it off since the last time Sam loved a girl like you was with Jessica.
But, it got too much for you to handle. You couldn’t breathe right without Sam being up your ass all the time. You couldn’t take it anymore and decided to leave for a few days. You needed to get your head in the right space, trying to figure out how to deal with this all.
You didn’t tell Sam you were leaving, only Dean. You made him promise not to tell Sam and you left, glad to be on your own for a few days. However, while you were out enjoying yourself, you saw a hunt present itself to you, and you decided to take it, always having extra weapons on you for safe keeping. You never know in the world of hunting.
Long story short, you were captured and had to wait for Dean and Sam to come get you. Needless to say, Sam was pissed when he found you. He didn’t say anything until you were all back at the Bunker. Dean tried to get Sam to calm down on the way over to you but with no luck.
You wished Dean hadn’t stayed for this fight, but he wanted to make sure you were okay. Again, long story short, you and Sam ended up yelling at each other for the whole night, arguing about hunting on your own.
You were a hunter before meeting Sam and Dean and you’ve hunted alone most of your life. You know that you, being on a hunt alone, isn’t what was the problem. You tried to get Sam to tell you about it but he wouldn’t, so, you threatened him with a divorce, saying how this obsession has got to stop.
He let you go. He couldn’t legally file for divorce, but he managed to do it (with the help of Castiel) and now here you were, 6 months down the line, alone and heartbroken. You thought you and Sam had something more special. He didn’t even bother fighting for you when you mentioned the word ‘divorce’.
Seeing how he spent so much time up your ass, you thought he would at least care for you. Maybe Sam wasn’t the man for you, maybe he was only meant for you to see your own self-worth. But the thing was… you missed Sam and you loved him so very much. Now he was gone and you didn’t know the next time you would see him.
You thought you would have run into him on a case somewhere but it never happened. But, that never stopped you from giving up hope and even now, while you were on a small case, you were still hoping your cell phone would ring and it would be him, ready to apologize to you.
Well, your phone did ring but it wasn’t Sam. It was Dean. Dean, you still liked. Dean, you still talked to every once in a while, getting updates on their lives… Sam’s life.
“Dean, hey, long time, no talk.” You said once you picked up.
“Hey, Y/N, how are you doing?” He asked, his voice strained a bit.
“Fine, are you okay?” You asked, noticing something was off right away.
“Yeah, I want to catch up, you know that, but I kind of need your help.”
“My help? What could you possibly need my help with? Don’t you have Sam and, I don’t know, and Angel?” You said, sighing deeply.
“Yeah, listen, Cas isn’t much help right now and I’m not with Sam. We’ve decided to take a break.”
“Wait, why? Is everything okay with you two?” You asked, worried that you were the one to cause a fight between the brothers.
“Yeah, no, everything is fine. Look, could you please meet me? Where are you?”
“In Wisconsin but sure, I’ll meet up with you if you promise to explain what is going on. Also, if you promise that Sam isn’t going to be there when I get there. I don’t know if I’m ready to see him right now.” You admitted, your voice getting lower with each word.
“I promise. I’ll text you the details. I really owe you one.”
“Yeah, you do, Winchester.” You said, hanging up shortly after. You sighed, seeing the details Dean had sent your way. You had no idea what was going on with him but this was Dean, of course you were going to help him. A small part of you hoped that he lied and that Sam really was going to be there. But, based on the way he treated you, you hoped that he wasn’t.
You got to the isolated house that Dean had invited you to and got out of your car, looking around the place. There was nothing for miles and you wondered why Dean was here, out of all places. Was he hiding form someone? Was he hiding someone here? You had a ton of questions but they would only get answered if you walked inside the house.
You saw the Impala and immediately, your mind was filled with memories of you and Sam and the nights spent in the backseat. You sighed, shaking them out of your brain for the time being. You couldn’t help Dean if your mind was filled with Sam. At least he wasn’t going to be here.
You walked up to the front door and found it unlocked, walking inside without waiting for someone to come to the door.
“Dean! I’m here!” You said, closing the door with a heavy thud.
“Dean, you called her here?” You froze at the sound of the one person who you dreaded seeing. You slowly walked into the living room and saw Dean bickering with his brother. Upon entering, both brothers pulled away with Dean looking at you and Sam looking at the ground.
“You said he wasn’t going to be here.” You said, looking at Sam who refused to look at you.
“Well, that shouldn’t matter, right? You’re already here and we do kind of need your help. We would call Cas but he’s been MIA for quite a while and we didn’t have anyone else to turn to.” Dean said sheepishly.
“There is literally 5 other people we could have called, Dean.” Sam said, his voice low as if he didn’t want you to hear it but you did. You sighed and felt your heartbreak at this. Sam scoffed when Dean didn’t say anything and left you and Dean alone.
“I think you better call someone else. I don’t think I’m wanted here.” You said, turning around to leave.
“No, stay, please?” Dean said, rushing over to you and grabbing your arm lightly. “Come on, we both need you here. We worked so well in the past. Come on, Y/N, please. For me?” You sighed and turned back around, your arm still in Dean’s hand. You stared into the green eyes that begged you to stay.
“Alright, fine, what are we dealing with?” You asked, trying to push the thought of Sam’s attitude into the back of your mind.
“A Nephilim. Look, you knew that Lucifer was going to be a problem before and you knew he impregnated a woman, right?” Dean said, letting your arm go.
“Don’t bother telling her this, Dean, I don’t think she could help.” Sam said, walking back into the room.
“Sam, please, don’t…” Dean said with a sigh.
“No, Dean, let Sam say what he wants. I think he forgot who it was that helped him finish not one, not two, not even three, but a ton of cases because he was too dumb to figure it out for himself.” You said, glaring at Sam. You thought that once you saw Sam, you would realize how stupid you two were being and forgive each other but that clearly wasn’t the case. He didn’t want you here, well, you were going to make sure that you would stay here.
“Are you forgetting who had to save your ass because you got yourself captured not one, not twice, not even three times but a ton of times?” Sam retorted. You were about to say something when Dean cut you off.
“Both of you, knock it off! Sam, how is Jack?” Dean said, looking at his brother.
“He won’t stop staring at me. He won’t even let me enter the room.” Sam said, sighing.
“Who is Jack?” You asked.
“Lucifer’s son.” Dean said, looking at you.
“Lucifer has a son? You didn’t get Kelly to kill the baby?” You gasped, hitting Dean in the arm.
“Hey, she tried to. She actually tried to kill herself but Jack wouldn’t let her. We need your help with him. He won’t listen to any of us and we thought that he might listen to you.” Dean said, giving you those puppy eyes again.
“Ugh, fine, but only for you, Dean. It’s bad enough Sam is here.” You said, glaring at Sam before pushing past both Winchesters. You left the room but stayed by the door to hear what they were saying because you knew that as soon as you left, an argument would erupt.
“Dean, why the hell did you invite her here?” Sam said, glaring at his brother.
“You know why, Sam. You’re pissy every single day and frankly, it’s getting on my damn nerve. Now, you let her walk away the first time, don’t make that mistake again.” Dean said, glaring at Sam. Neither brother was backing down from this.
You got tears but wouldn’t let them fall. You sighed and walked down the hallway to the only bedroom in the house. You sighed and knocked on the door just so Jack would know you were coming in. You didn’t wait for him to answer you and you opened the door, seeing the frightened child huddled in the corner.
“Hi, Jack, you don’t know me but my name is Y/N.” You said, seeing his eyes glow yellow upon you stepping into the room. Shit, that wasn’t good.
“Okay, look, I know you’re scared right now. Your mother just died and your father is locked away right now but I won’t hurt you.” You tried again, walking a bit closer to him. He growled, seeing how you were getting closer and you stopped, fearful that he would kill you.
“Look, Jack, I’m sorry this is how you were brought into the world. It’s a shitty world right now but just let me help you. I’m not your mom, I know this, but if you let me, I would like to try. Sam and Dean, they won’t hurt you. They’re good people. They’re just confused because, well, we’ve never met a Nephilim before. You understand, right?” You said, trying to be gentler with him. He stopped his growling but his eyes stayed yellow.
“It’s okay to be scared. I’m scared, but not of you. Look, I can see you’re hurt, you’re bleeding. Let me help you.” You said, staring into his eyes. He sighed and his eyes turned back to their normal color. You smiled, sitting on the bed, waiting for him to come to you.
He got up slowly and walked over to you, sitting next to you on the bed. He reluctantly gave you his arm where you saw a cut was. You looked into his eyes and smiled, looking at the wound. You were about to get up and get the first aid kit when there was a knock on the door.
“Come in.” You said. The door opened and when Jack saw Sam and Dean, he growled, his eyes turning yellow.
“Hey, Jack, it’s okay. I told you they won’t hurt you. I won’t let them hurt you.” You said, looking at him. He looked at you and nodded, calming down.
“I’m going to get the first aid kit, so I’ll be right back.” You said to Jack, getting up from the bed but he gripped your arm tightly, not wanting you to leave.
“Jack, hey, it’s okay, I’ll be right back.” You said, looking at him.
“No, stay.” He said.
“Okay, fine, will one of you get the kit?” You asked Sam or Dean, sitting back on the bed. Dean left before his brother got a chance to, leaving you and Sam to stare at one another.
“Wow, you’re better with him than Dean and I.” Sam said, not knowing where to look.
“Yeah, go figures, huh? I’m surprised you left him in this room all by himself. You were so far up my ass, you barely let me breathe on my own.” You said, glaring at Sam.
“Oh, I was up your ass? How could I be, when you left to go on hunts by yourself? Did you have no regards to other people’s feelings?” Sam asked, stepping into the room. Jack’s grip on you tightened and you turned to him, putting a hand on his back.
“It’s okay, Jack. We’re not fighting. No, if we were fighting, Sam would be yelling shit left and right, throwing things to make him more macho.” You said. Sam was about to yell at you when Dean came back to the room.
“God, what is with you two lately? You used to be in love with each other.” Dean said, handing you the kit. You turned to Jack and patched up his arm. Smiling at him when he was good as new. You figured since he was new to this world, his powers haven’t taken effect yet.
“Yeah, Dean, used to, as in, not anymore. It’s funny how a person can change so much.” You said, looking at Sam while you said it.
“I changed? You were the one who left me.” Sam said.
“Yeah! Because you were obsessive! You barely let me leave the Bunker and if I did, you wanted to come with. Like, dude, have you heard of personal space?” You accused him.
“It’s not my fault I wanted to protect you! Sorry, I cared too much!” Sam said with a glare. You were about to say something when you looked at Jack.
“Why don’t you get some sleep, okay?” You said. Jack nodded and he laid on the bed. You sighed and moved Sam and Dean out of the room. You hated fighting in front of children, you didn’t care if this child was a Nephilim.
You stormed away from the bedroom and to your bag, throwing the first aid kit on the couch. You grabbed your bag and sighed.
“No, Y/N, where are you going? We need you.” Dean said, pushing his brother to the side.
“No, Dean, you don’t!” You said, turning around with tears in your eyes. “I don’t want to stay here when the person I love the most hates me and can’t stand to be around me. I’m leaving, Dean, and this time, I’m not coming back.” You looked at Sam to see him carry a guilty look but you didn’t care.
You left the house, walking to your car. You needed to get away from here or else your heart would break even more. You threw your bag in the backseat and was about to get in the car when a voice stopped you.
“Y/N, wait…” Sam said with a sigh, sticking his hands in his pockets. You didn’t turn around because if you did, your heart would break more.
“Sam, just go away. I don’t want to hear it.”
“I love you. I don’t hate you.” He blurted out, making you freeze. You turned around and looked at him, your angry façade crumbling.
“You love me?”
“I never stopped.”
“I don’t understand, Sam.” You started to say but Sam cut you off.
“No, listen, I know I’ve acted like a dick, asshole, douchebag, whatever you want to call me, I’ve acted like it and you didn’t deserve any of it. I hated watching you walk out but I hated myself for not stopping you. I shouldn’t have let you go.” He said, sighing deeply.
“Then, why did you? Sam, why were you treating me like a child? I know for damn certain it wasn’t because you didn’t want me to hunt alone. That’s bullshit.” You said, needing an explanation.
“I wanted to protect you…” Sam said, trailing off.
“No, Sam, don’t give me that. How you treated me, that wasn’t protection, that was possession.” You said, taking a few steps closer to him.
“No, you don’t get it, Y/N. I watched Jessica burn on the ceiling. I could have protected her but I didn’t. I pulled in Eileen into this life we live and she died because of me. I couldn’t protect her. Everyone I meet, dies and it’s all my fault. I couldn’t let that happen to you. You’re the love of my life and if you died because of me, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. Pushing you away seemed like the easier choice.” Sam said, looking at the ground.
Your heart quenched at this and you sighed, walking closer to him, putting your hands on his chest. You made him look at you and you stared into his eyes.
“Sam, I know how to take care of myself. I appreciate you wanting to protect me and look out for me but you can’t be there all the time. I married you because I felt safe with you, because I love you. That will never change no matter how much of a dick you act like. I married you because you’re Sam Winchester. You protect me just by being there for me.” You said, moving your hands to around his neck.
He placed his hands on your waist and you could see the tears in his eyes.
“I love you so much.” Sam whispered.
“I love you.” You said, standing up on your toes and pressing your lips against his. You haven’t felt at home in a while but you were home right now. You knew that you and Sam would be okay from this moment forward. You two would face the whole world together but it didn’t matter as long as he was by your side.

Your name: submit What is this?
“What about this one?” your sister asked, holding up a shirt.
You made a face. “No way.”
She sighed at you. “Seriously? Ugh. Are you being difficult on purpose?” she asked, digging through your closet. “Why do you even still have these clothes if you will never wear them?”
“We’re just going to a bar! It’s not a frickin’ red carpet event!” you countered.
She pointed to the shirt she had just dropped onto the continuously growing ‘no’ pile on your bed. “That? No celebrity in their right mind would wear that on the red carpet.” She paused thoughtfully for a moment. “…Maybe Lady Gaga. It’s a casual shirt!”
You laughed. “It is still a no…”
You heard her gasp suddenly and she whirled around with an excited smile on her face. “This. This, this, this!” she said.
“Your eyes will look amaaaazing with this. The color is going to pop. And wear it with those skinny jeans, and that little black motorcycle jacket you have—and these boots!” She grinned at you, nodding eagerly. “Seriously, the jeans show off your butt and this shirt which actually fits you properly is going to accentuate your waist. Trust me. It’s gonna be hot.”
You chewed your bottom lip. You did like that motorcycle jacket… and that shirt did bring out your eyes… but—“Can’t I just wear one of my—”
She interrupted you “—if the next word you say is flannels, I am going to smack you.” Your sister’s cell phone beeped and she hastily looked at the screen before clearing and locking it again. You thought you saw a vague smile on her face.
“Who’s that?” you asked, searching through your closet for your jacket.
“Oh, no one. Just a friend from back home,” she said, waving it off. “Alright. But really. No flannels.”
This only made you laugh and smile guiltily. “Okay! Okay, you win. God. Am I that predictable?” you asked, snatching the shirt from her hands.
“Uhh, yes. That’s why I’m helping you,” she called after you as you went into the bathroom. “Hurry up and get ready! I’m gonna go see what the boys are doing. I’ll see you out front!”
You fixed your hair and make-up and threw on the clothes your sister had suggested and took a look in the mirror. And you had to hand it to her—you liked the way you looked… But still, half of you was dreading going out because you knew it would mean you had to spend an entire evening feeling like your heart was ripped out every time Sam and your sister did something “couple-y.” The other half of you really needed a goddamn drink and a distraction… It seemed like every time you weren’t purposely distracting yourself, your mind wandered back to Sam’s fingers brushing yours as he handed you your coffee, or the way he had so sweetly jumped up to get it for you, sleep still in his eyes. Usually you could talk yourself out of thinking there was meaning in those little moments, but you couldn’t talk yourself out of the way he had been looking at you when you tumbled down on top of him, and how suddenly one of his hands had floated to your lower back and stayed there—you had both been frozen, suspended. God, why am I doing this to myself?! Turning it over and over in your mind wasn’t going to change the fact that he was with someone else. You forced out an exhale, checked your reflection one more time and headed out to the front of the bunker to see if everyone was ready to go.
You weren’t sure why, but you were a little nervous. There were so few occasions when you put on anything other than jeans and a t-shirt or a flannel, or your comfy clothes around the bunker. You stepped into the front room a little hesitantly and Dean was the first one to notice you.
“Y/N, holy shit,” he said, his face cracking into a boyish grin. His green eyes crinkled in a smile. “I mean, you always look good but damn.” You felt your cheeks turning red and covered your face with your hands, laughing at Dean.
“Stop! Shut up!” you protested through nervous laughter. “I don’t deal well with compliments!”
Your sister let out a wolf whistle at you and smiled excitedly. “You look awesome! Do you like it?”
You nodded a little shyly, your cheeks still burning. “I do, actually,” you said, looking down at your boots.
“I told you that you’d look hot. Babe, doesn’t she look hot?!” she said, nudging Sam with an elbow. He had simply been staring at you with a slightly peculiar expression on his face, but this jolted him out of his trance.
“Huh? Yeah. Y/N, you look… you look amazing,” he said. You caught his eyes and he managed to give you a small smile. Your cheeks burned hotter.
Dean could feel some shift in his brother’s mood and he worried that your sister would feel it too. He cleared his throat. “Well, shit. Can I call dibs on you tonight? Forget the hot bartender,” he joked, giving you a wink.
You rolled your eyes at him and shook your head. “In your dreams, Winchester,” you said playfully.
“Well, actually, sometimes yes...”
“Dean!” you scolded him, your face turning red again. He laughed heartily and your sister gave you a satisfied look. Sam simply looked on, unusually quiet.
Shortly thereafter, you all piled into the Impala and headed to the bar. It was a Friday night, so it was sure to be reasonably busy, and you weren’t surprised to see that the parking lot was almost full. To your sister’s disappointment, ‘the hot bartender’ wasn’t working, which you assured her was perfectly fine… you weren’t just going to throw yourself at someone because they were reasonably attractive and happened to be right in front of you.
You started with a few rounds of pool against Dean, trying to ignore your sister being all over Sam as they watched and sipped their drinks. “You lose again, Dean. Cough it up,” you said, holding your hand out for the $20 he had bet you. “Don’t worry. I’ll just use it to buy us all some drinks,” you said, grinning at him. You turned around to shoot a triumphant look at Sam, who always loved to see Dean lose, but your sister was just leaning in to kiss him, her arms around his neck, and your stomach lurched. You quickly looked away and handed your pool cue to Dean. “So, drinks,” you said, and you hurried away.
You came back with a tray of beers and some shots of whiskey and set it down on the table.
“Losers first,” you said cheekily, handing Dean a shot.
He shot you a half-serious glare. “Oh, I let you win. To make up for knocking you on your ass earlier today.” You flicked him off and grabbed a shot of whiskey.
“Alright. Everyone drink—”
You sister shook her head. “Hell no. You know I don’t drink whiskey,” she said, turning back to her beer.
“You party pooper,” you said playfully. “Fine. Me, Dean, and Sam then.” You held your shot glass up in a toast. “Here’s to those who wish us well, and all the rest can go to hell.”
“Cheers to that,” Dean agreed heartily, and you all drank. After you took your shot, you reached over and threw back the one meant for your sister. The action wasn’t lost on Sam… and Dean caught your eyes and raised his eyebrows at you as you also grabbed a beer off the tray.
“…What?” you asked in an undertone.
“You okay?” he asked hesitantly.
“Fine. Why?”
He pressed his lips into a thin line and held up his free hand. “Nothin’. Nevermind!”
The music changed and your sister jumped up off her stool. “Oh, I love this song! Come on, babe!” and she pulled Sam out onto the dance floor.
Dean watched your gaze follow the two of them and then you turned back to the high-top table and focused on putting a serious dent in your beer. “Hey. Take it easy, hot rod,” he said. “What are you doing? Trying to get wasted? Slow it down,” he said with a gruff laugh, shaking his head at you.
“And what if I am?” you asked him.
Dean studied your face for a moment, his brow furrowed. “Y/N…”
You knew that tone and averted your eyes, looking down at the glass in your hands. “I’m not talking about this, especially not here, and not right now,” you said.
Dean sighed heavily. “Come on. Just—try and have some fun tonight, okay? Want to play darts?”
You chewed your bottom lip for a moment and then nodded. “Sure. Right after I grab another drink,” you said, and you downed what was left in your glass. Dean frowned at you, but only watched as you headed up to the bar.
You were waiting for the bartender to get to you when the guy next to you looked your way. You pretended not to notice.
“Hey,” he said. You turned and gave him a quick, tight smile. “Haven’t seen you in here before. I don’t think,” he said. You just raised your eyebrows at him but didn’t say anything. You could feel him checking you out but you again pretended not to notice. “Can I buy you a drink?”
“That’s alright,” you said. “I’m just here with some friends.”
He laughed lightly. “Well, come on. I can still buy you a drink,” he argued. “Please. It’s just one drink.”
“…Fine. Sure. Why not,” you said. “Thanks.” Mostly you just wanted to shut him up.
He smiled at you. “What are you drinking?” he asked, putting a finger up to catch the bartender’s attention.
“Whiskey and coke.”
“Sounds good. I’m Brian,” he said, holding out a hand. You accepted it and shook it briefly.
“Y/N.”
“Nice to meet you. So, are you from around here?” he asked. You watched as the bartender poured your drinks and wished he would hurry up.
“Not exactly,” you said, trying to give him as little of a response as you could without being outrightly rude.
“What’s that mean?” he asked. Okay… this guy was not giving up.
Thankfully the bartender brought over your drink and you gratefully took it, giving Brian one last tight smile. “Well, thanks for this… my friend is waiting for me so—”
“Oh—well, let him wait,” he said, smiling at you, trying to lay on the charm.
You ignored it. “Thanks again,” you said, and you turned and headed back to Dean.
Dean had seen the whole interaction from across the bar. He and Sam had a tendency to keep a close eye on you and your sister when you were out at the townie bars. Some of the locals could be a little unsavory. “Did you make a new friend up there?”
You rolled your eyes. “He insisted on buying me a drink… so eventually I let him and then I bailed,” you said with a shrug. “Ready? Who’s going first?”
“Mmm. You can go first,” Dean said. He looked over your shoulder in the direction of the bar and could see that the guy was still watching you. Dean purposely stepped between his gaze and you as you lined up with the dart board. Note to self: Keep an eye on that guy, Dean thought.
You shot really well the first round and let out some loud cheers of enjoyment as you went and retrieved your darts, giving Dean a sassy look.
“Alright, don’t get too cocky,” Dean said. “I think in about 15 minutes those shots and that beer are gonna hit you and your aim is going out the window.”
You sipped at your drink. “Whatever you need to tell yourself, Dean…”
Well—he was right. You were feeling pretty tipsy as you wrapped up the first game. Dean had beat you, but only barely. You pouted at him. “You’re a cheater,” you accused.
“No, I’m just mostly sober. Alright, why don’t we sit down and have some water,” Dean suggested.
“How about we don’t,” you said, giving him a sassy look and getting up, your empty drink glass in your hand. He gently touched your sleeve and gave you a long look.
“What?” you demanded. Dean sighed.
He shook his head at you. “What do you want? Wait here, and I’ll go up and get it.”
You grinned widely at him. “Two shots,” you said.
Dean cocked an eyebrow at you. “Two shots? One for you and one for me?”
You shook your head. “Nope. Both for me. And a beer.”
“Y/N…”
You scoffed. “Oh, you’re one to talk, Dean! Fine, if you won’t get it, I’ll go get it myself—”
“Stop—God! Just wait here. I’ll go get your damn drinks. But you need to slow down. I am NOT gonna let you anywhere near Baby if you might puke,” he said vehemently. “And we do not want you drinking yourself into oblivion.” Actually, that’s kind of exactly what I want, you thought.
You watched him disappear into the crowd toward the bar again. A moment later, Sam and your sister reappeared. She fanned herself with her hand and sat down on the stool beside you.
“Sooooo,” she said.
You shrugged. “So?”
She laughed at you. “Any prospects?”
Sam’s eyes snapped over to your face. You shrugged. “Nope.”
“Well, have you actually talked to anyone?” she pressed.
“I talked to some guy at the bar who bought me a drink,” you said. Sam shifted his weight a little anxiously. “And then I ran away,” you said, giving your sister a wide satisfied smile. She laughed but shook her head at you.
“You might be hopeless, you know that?” she said. One song ended and another started with some familiar twanging chords. Her face lit up.
You shook your head fast. “No!”
“Pleeeeease,” she said, grabbing your arm. “Please, please, pleaaaaase. Come dance! One song!”
“You know I don’t dance,” you countered.
“You have to! It’s like an unwritten rule that we have to dance to this song.” She put on her best pleading puppy eyes and a laugh bubbled up from you.
“Oh my God… You’re the worst!” you said, laughing.
“Pleeeeease, sis! Come on! Live a little!”
“Oh my God… FINE!” you relented.
“YES!” she jumped up, gave Sam a peck on the cheek and grabbed your hand. “We’ll be back,” she said grinning.
“Just give me a second—here comes Dean with more drinks,” you said. “You’re lucky I’m half-drunk right now. Sober me never would have agreed to this,” you teased her. Sam felt his brow furrow reflexively, but neither you nor your sister noticed.
“You like it,” she retorted. “If it weren’t for me, you’d never have any fun.”
Dean was back and you grabbed a shot off the tray. “Oh, thank god. More courage juice,” you said downing it, and then you let your sister drag you out onto the dance floor. Sam and Dean watched the two of you head out, happily bouncing around and singing. Dean shook his head and laughed a low gruff laugh. Sam’s brow was wrinkled with concern. “Well, this is probably going to lead to trouble,” Dean said, sipping at his beer. Sam swallowed hard.
“Yeah… what’s up with Y/N?” Sam asked after a long moment.
Dean shrugged and pulled a face, the corners of his mouth pressed down.
“She just—she seems like she’s making a pretty good effort to get drunk,” Sam said.
“Seems like she is succeeding,” Dean replied. “Maybe you should ask her about it. That’s out of my jurisdiction.” He sipped his beer again and watched the turmoil in his brother’s eyes.
The song ended and you laughed as your sister threw an arm around you. She fanned herself with her hand again. “It’s hot. Let’s get some air,” she said, and the two of you headed outside and breathed in the cool night air. You looked up at the stars, innumerable, and sighed. You noticed it was a little difficult to keep them from looking like they were spinning. You sister was checking her phone, sitting on a concrete bollard, swinging her feet. She looked back at you and smiled.
“Thanks for dancing with me. That was fun.”
You nodded, leaning back against the wall to steady yourself, and staring out over the parking lot. “It was.” You heaved in a deep breath. A comfortable silence stretched between you for a long moment.
“So, uhh… Dean was being pretty flirty with you earlier,” she said. You snapped around to look at her and she raised her eyebrows at you.
“The definition of ‘Dean’ is flirty,” you said with a laugh.
She cocked her head at you. “Well… maybe. You ever think about—”
You busted out laughing. “You can’t be serious! Oh my God! Let me stop you right there. No! Absolutely not!"
“Why not?!” she exclaimed. “I mean, he’s hot, he’s funny, smart, and totally available—you two seem to have a good time together! And he obviously cares about you.”
You stared at her with your mouth hanging open and a queer expression on your face.
“And then someday I could get married to Sam and you could marry Dean,” she joked. “It’d be like a bad 90’s movie!” she laughed. “Two sisters marrying two brothers.”
You shook your head at her with another loud laugh. “You are so off base right now—I can’t even find the words. Look, I love Dean, but we’re just friends! I don’t feel that way about him.”
“Well, maybe you should,” she said wiggiling her eyebrows at you. You gave her a skeptical look and shook your head.
“Look, I don’t need to be dating someone,” you said. “I don’t understand this crusade you are on to attach me to someone. I’m totally fine.”
She sighed and stretched, a soft frown on her lips. “So you say. Well, I need another drink. You coming in?” she asked.
“I’ll be in soon. Still hot,” you said. You were enjoying the cool evening air on your face and the smell of green, summer grass. You leaned back against the wall, feeling a little unsteady, relishing the dreamy, slightly fuzzy feeling in your head of being buzzed.
“Alright. See you in there.”
You let your mind drift and inevitably it drifted back to Sam…
Your sister appeared back at the table with the Winchesters and grabbed an unclaimed beer Dean had bought.
“Hey, where’s Y/N?” Sam asked curiously.
“Oh, we stepped out front to get some fresh air. She said she’d be in soon.”
Sam’s brow contracted down low over his eyes. “You left her out there alone? What the hell were you thinking?” he asked forcefully.
You sister was taken aback by his tone and answered angrily. “She’s a big girl. She can take care of herself,” she scoffed.
“She’s drunk,” Sam replied a little heatedly, immediately getting up and pushing through the crowd, heading through the front door. You looked over as the door opened up and straightened up when you saw it was Sam.
“Hey,” he said, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jacket, relief washing over him as he saw you were okay.
“Hi,” you said. “What’s up?”
“Oh—just—you shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said.
You gave him a half-smile and tilted your head. “I’m fine.”
“Well… you’ve been drinking kind of a lot tonight. Just—want to be sure you’re safe,” he said.
You considered his thoughtful expression and nodded. “I see.” Your eyes turned back out to gaze across the parking lot.
Sam clenched and unclenched his hand in his pocket. “…why are you drinking so much?” he asked. “I mean, you usually are more of a two-beer kind of person.”
You looked over at him and Sam thought your expression was a little sad. You shrugged. “No reason.” And you didn’t say anything more, though Sam wished you would. You stood and started back toward the front door of the bar, and Sam held it open for you, walking with your through the crowd of people toward your table.
“Thanks. I’ll be back. Just gonna go use the restroom,” you said, and you broke off from Sam toward the back of the bar.
Inside, Dean had been sitting in silence across from your sister, completely at a loss for what to say, simply staring into his beer. The awkward silence was interrupted when Sam arrived back at the table. Your sister looked up at him.
“She’s fine. She’s just going to use the restroom,” Sam said. “You really shouldn’t have left her alone out there,” he scolded your sister again. “You know how much she’s been drinking tonight.”
Dean tried to intervene. “Sammy—”
Your sister’s jaw clenched. “Funny—she seems to be just fine.” The tension stretched for some time and was almost unbearable. Dean was thinking about a way to escape when he suddenly felt a friendly hand on his back.
“What’s up?” Your voice from behind him, a little slurred but very much fine. You squeezed in between Dean and your sister at the high-top table and grabbed the last shot that was sitting unclaimed on the tray and downed it. You chased it with a deep drink from your beer. That’s when you noticed everyone was staring at you and that there was some tension you didn’t understand.
“What?”
Dean rubbed a hand awkwardly over the stubble on his chin. Your sister got up abruptly and rushed off in the direction of the bathroom. You watched her go in confusion and looked back at the Winchesters. Sam was staring at you with some unreadable expression, and Dean seemed to be avoiding your eyes. “What’s going on?”
“You should go check on her,” Dean said pointedly to you.
“What? Why?”
“Just—go check on her.” You shrugged and obliged, turning right back around and heading in the direction your sister had gone, putting a hand out to steady yourself as you reached the hallway to the restrooms. God, the booze was catching up with you.
Dean gave Sam a disappointed look and shook his head. “Dude. I mean, what the hell...”
“Well—she shouldn’t have left her out there alone,” Sam argued, leaning heavily on the table, rubbing a hand over his face. “Do you disagree?”
Dean just stared at him. “No, but Sam… You have to get this under control or do something about it. That was almost too obvious…”
Sam just tried to unclench his jaw.
In the bathroom you tried to coax your sister out of a stall and get her to tell you why there had been so much tension suddenly. You finally succeeded in the first, but not the second. When she came out, she checked her reflection in the mirror, washed her hands, and gave you a forced smile. “I’m fine,” she said.
You gave her a skeptical and incredulous look. “Will you please tell me what the fuck all that was about?”
“It’s nothing,” she said. “Come on.” You followed her back out to your table and some of the tension seemed to have abated, although you noticed that Sam wouldn’t really look at her—or anyone. He was just staring down into the tawny liquid in his glass.
“Dean—” you pulled a quarter out of your pocket. “Wanna play?” you asked with a goofy, wide grin.
“Quarters? You want to play quarters,” he said. “…Now?”
“Why, what’s the problem? Are you scaaared?” you teased him.
“Y/N, you’re already drunk. This is a terrible idea,” he said.
Your face fell and your smile disappeared. “Alright, why doesn’t everyone just stop trying to babysit me and start treating me like I’m a fucking adult who can make their own decisions? Jesus…” you shoved your hand back into your pocket and went up to the bar to get another drink.
“I’ll go talk to her,” your sister said, giving Dean a grimace and sliding off her stool.
Dean watched her go after you. "Well, tonight is going fucking great, huh?" he said, looking to Sam. Sam was trying hard not to keep glancing up at you but was finding it difficult. “Hey,” Dean said, hitting him lightly on the arm. “Let’s play darts or something, hmm?”
“What?”
“Darts? Pool?” Sam didn’t say anything. “You can’t just sit here and stare all night, Sam. You’re just torturing yourself. Come on. I’ll bet you $20 I kick your ass at pool.” Sam cast one final look in your direction and nodded to Dean.
Your sister squeezed in next to you at the bar and you glanced over at her. “Are you going to lecture me about my drinking too?”
She laughed. “No. Honestly, I’m glad to see you let yourself go for once,” she said, bumping you with her elbow. You were waiting to order when the bartender came over and set two tequila shots down in front of you and your sister.
“We didn’t order this,” you said.
“I know. It’s from the guy over there,” the bartender said, indicating toward the end of the bar. You leaned forward and looked down to see the guy you had met earlier, Brian, staring in your direction.
You looked away and rolled your eyes. “That’s the guy who was hitting on me earlier,” you said to your sister. “Who bought me a drink.”
“Hmm.” Your sister leaned forward and seized him up. “Free booze though, so what the hell, right?” You both downed your shot. “Come on. I want to dance some more!” She grabbed your hand and tugged you back out on the dance floor. You gave in and tried to let go of your bad mood.
After dancing for a few more song you needed a break. The bar was starting to clear out a little; it was getting late. You hated to admit if but you were definitely drunk. Much to your dismay though, it was not distracting you from your feelings about Sam… You arrived back at the table and immediately reached for another beer, hoping that if you just kept drinking maybe you wouldn't think so much, or feel so much, or care so much. Sam and Dean were taking a break between games of pool and Dean gave you a look. “What?” you asked, dubious.
“I really don’t think you need anything more,” Dean said, giving you a classic Dean half-smirk.
“Since when do you get to boss me around, Winchester,” you said, poking him in the chest with a finger. Dean was at least relieved that you hadn't gotten mad this time...
“Since you have to ride home in my car, which I prefer vomit-free.”
You pouted at him. “I’m not gonna get sick! I’m not even that drunk…” you argued.
“Famous last words of a drunk person,” Dean said.
You looked over at Sam. “Sam, help me out here?”
He looked uneasy. “…maybe you should slow down,” Sam said gently, his brow knit with concern.
You leaned on the table, continuing to pout.
“I’ll get the table ready, Sammy,” Dean said, heading over to claim a free table, leaving the two of you alone a little strategically.
The silence stretched a moment before Sam gave you a tight smile. “Are you, uhh, having fun?”
“Yeah. Sort of,” you said, nodding and leaning more heavily on the table.
Sam’s brow contracted low over his eyes. “Sort of?”
“Well—when my sister isn’t trying to set me up with people I have more fun…” you said, with a wry laugh.
Sam stomach twisted a little at the thought. One of these days you would find someone—it was inevitable. You were funny, smart, beautiful, fun to be around, easy to talk to… it was only a matter of time. “She does seem to be pretty bent on it, huh?” he said.
You rolled your eyes. “Yeah.” A grin spread across your face. “Get this. She even tried to suggest that I date Dean,” you laughed.
“Really?” Sam asked, forcing out a small laugh. Truthfully, he didn’t find the premise amusing at all. A jealous monster roared to life in his chest, just as it had when he watched you and Dean spar earlier in the day.
“How weird would that be? I mean, he’s like a brother to me,” you said. You paused thoughtfully. A tight lump formed in Sam’s throat. If you felt that way about Dean, didn’t it only make sense you felt that way about him? Had he imagined there was something in all those little moments? “Are—are you having fun?” you asked Sam, your voice and face suddenly a bit serious. You could read something in his mood and were already predisposed not to believe his answer, sensing that something was bothering him.
“Yeah,” he answered, a little too quickly, and it sounded forced even to his own ears.
You nodded, your eyes flickering over his face. His were drawn to yours magnetically and he nervously rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. “You know, umm… you really do look nice,” he said. A smile grew on your lips.
“Thanks,” you said. He thought he saw a spark return to your eyes.
“But, you know, I also agree with what Dean said earlier—I think you always look nice. Even when you’re just wearing those pajama pants with the hippos on them.” A small smile tugged on his lips and you noticed that it reached all the way to the corners of his eyes. You could have melted right then and there. You laughed a little bashfully, heat rising in your face, and your lips fell partially open. You were searching for something to say but you felt completely paralyzed and the only thing you could think about was how fast your heart was racing and how much you just wanted to grab him and kiss him and— “Sam! Table’s ready!” Sam gave you one last warm look and followed Dean over to the pool table. You watched him go feeling a little like your heart was alternating between soaring and dropping into your stomach, chewing your bottom lip.
You glanced back over your shoulder and saw your sister up at the bar still. “Hey,” you said, joining her. “You know, I really didn’t want to come out tonight. But for once I am glad you forced me to do something,” you joked.
“I know,” you sister said with a smile. She considered you a moment. “Your cheeks are all flushed,” she laughed. “What have you been up to?” She wiggled her eyebrows at you suggestively.
“What?” you felt yourself warming even more. Sam’s face flashed in your mind. “Nothing! I’m just warm—from—because we were dancing!”
“You sure?” She said, accepting her beer from the bartender. You shot her an annoyed look. The dance floor had cleared out pretty well and you were both in need of ice water and a break anyway, but the bar area was still crowded and you found yourself squeezing in between the other patrons. Your sister got impatient waiting for the bartender to get back around to you and was glancing alternately at her phone and toward the door to outside.
“Don’t do it,” you said, shaking your head at her and giving her a stern look.
She gave you a guilty smile. “But I reeeeally want one.”
“You always want a smoke when you drink,” you scolded her. “It’s disgusting and literally killing you.”
“I know, I know—but… I’m just gonna pop outside for one. I swear, just one,” she said. “Get me some water when he finally gets back to you? Thanks!”
“Do you even have one?!” you yelled after her, but she was already gone. You sighed and turned your attention back to the bar top, leaning heavily on it and realizing all of a sudden that you really were pretty damn drunk… You should not have done those last shots. You passed a hand over your eyes and tried to stop your vision from spinning, deciding that you really, actually should drink water for the rest of the night. You also realized you really had to pee. Screw this, you thought, and you left the bar behind to head for the bathroom.
You washed your hands and checked your reflection in the mirror, smoothing your hair, wiping a smudge of eyeliner away. All of a sudden it was like all the alcohol hit you at once and you felt like everything around you was wavering. You stepped out into the hallway, one hand on the wall to steady yourself, and stopped to take a breath. Fuck. I should have listened to Sam and Dean. I hate when they’re right. It felt like the floor was moving beneath your feet. “Fancy meeting you here again.” You looked over to see the same guy from earlier again. Brian. Great…
“Imagine that…” you said, noncommittally, straightening up.
“You look like you need some air,” he said. “Too much to drink?” The hairs stood up on the back of your neck. Had he been watching you the whole night? Had he followed you back here and waited for you to come out of the bathroom? Your heart started to race a little faster. The bathrooms were in a narrow hallway at the back of the bar. It felt isolated, tacked on the end of the building. You couldn’t even see any of the other patrons due to the position of a nearby corner, but you could hear the dull, rolling sound of loud conversation loudly.
“Actually, I’m just heading back to my friends,” you said, turning to leave. Fuck, you were unsteady on your feet. But you knew well enough to trust your gut when that tingle ran up your spine, drunk or sober. You abruptly felt a strong hand on your arm and you whipped around to see him smirking at you. He was holding onto you tightly, so tight it hurt a little. Your heart rushed with rising panic.
“Actually, I think you should stay. I bought you a few drinks… The least you could do would be have a decent conversation with me. The least,” he repeated. He flashed you a grin that made your stomach turn. “I like the way you moved out there,” he said. “You should show me what else you’ve got.”
You tried to pull your arm from his grasp but he only held on more tightly. Your temper flared instantly. “Get the fuck off me,” you said dangerously. He didn’t like that response. He pushed you back into the wall behind you and pinned you there, grabbing tightly onto your upper arms. You were stunned for a couple seconds from the forcefulness of your head and back hitting the wall. The next thing you knew he was pressing himself into you, his hips against your body, trying to kiss your neck. You could feel his breath on your skin. “No! Get the fuck off!” You yelled it as loud as you could. You managed to use a knee to push him away from you and then ripped yourself loose from his grasp. You started to rush toward the main part of the bar but your momentum was stopped when he grabbed the back of your jacket, and you almost lost your balance. Thankfully, Sam and Dean had heard your yell clear as day and came rushing toward the sound of your voice.
You were again grappling with the guy, trying to get away and he was practically snarling in your face. “I’ll show you what I have a right to,” he said dangerously, through clenched teeth. Suddenly, Sam was right there and he pushed the guy off you, sending him back into the wall hard.
“What the hell are you doing!?” Sam was right up in the guy’s face. Dean reached you and wrapped an protectively arm around your shoulders, supporting you as your knees seemed to have gone a little shaky. Your chest was heaving in with scared breaths and your eyes were wide.
“Mind your own fucking business—” he snarled back, righting himself.
“I am,” Sam said forcefully. He cocked a fist back and punched the guy in the jaw. He crumpled to the side, swearing and came back up swinging but Sam hit him again and he slumped down onto the floor, holding his face.
Dean also looked ready to throttle the guy, but he wasn’t getting back up. You just wanted to get out of there.
Sam was standing over him, heaving in breaths, his fists clenched and shaking with anger. You gently said his name and it was like a switch flipped. “Sam.” His eyes snapped to your face. He stepped back, away from the guy, and turned to you, still blocking you protectively, a shield between you and him. “Are you alright?” he asked. All you could do was nod, but your eyes were still wide and wild-looking.
“Let’s go. Please, let’s just go,” you said softly. Sam nodded, shooting one last glance back at the guy who was still on his ass on the floor, and followed you and Dean down the hall back into the main room. Your sister was sitting at your table, apparently oblivious but she jumped up when she saw Dean leading you out with an arm around your shoulders and the stunned expression on your face.
“Oh my God. What happened?” she asked rushing over to you and the boys.
Sam’s jaw clenched. “I told you not to leave her alone,” he said through clenched teeth.
Your sister looked bewildered by his tone. “What? I went out for a smoke. She was at the bar when I went out—what happened?” she urged. Dean offered you his glass of ice water, which you accepted. “Do you want me to call the cops?” he asked you.
“The cops? Y/N—what happened?” your sister asked again desperately.
Sam bit his cheek. “If you’d been with her, you would know.”
Your eyes shot up to Sam’s face. “It’s not her fault, Sam,” you said, trying to mollify his anger. “I went back there on my own. And—I’m fine. It’s no one’s fault,” you added, though your voice was a little shaky.
“Except that douchebag,” Dean said, anger clear in his voice. He finally lifted his arm from around your shoulders.
You could tell your sister was extremely upset by Sam’s accusations, and from piecing together what had just transpired. The next second she bolted away from the table, hurrying to get outside. Dean gave Sam a disapproving and pointed look. Sam simply averted his eyes back onto your face. Dean sighed heavily. “I’ll—I’ll go check on her." He felt like that was the fiftieth time someone had said that tonight. Are you okay?” he asked you again. “Seriously, do you want me call the cops? You could press charges on that guy.”
You just shook your head. “No. I don’t want to deal with it being a whole thing. And hopefully Sam taught him enough of a lesson. I just want to go home.”
Dean nodded and gave your hand a light squeeze. “Thank God you’re okay,” he said. He headed for the exit. You sat there, staring down at the condensation dripping down on the outside of the ice water glass, but you could feel Sam’s eyes on you.
“How’s your hand?” you asked him.
“Huh?” Sam looked at his hand and there was definite swelling across the knuckles, but he flexed and squeezed his fingers a few times. “It’s totally fine.”
You swallowed, trying to rid your throat of the uncomfortable lump that had formed there. “Don’t be mad at her, Sam. None of this is her fault.”
His jaw clenched. “I already told her to keep an eye on your earlier tonight,” he said.
You shrugged. “It’s still not her fault.”
Sam rubbed a hand over his face. You had just been assaulted and you were worrying about his relationship? He sighed heavily. “I know. You’re right. I was out of line. I just—I’m… scared. And angry.”
You nodded. “I know.” Dean was striding back over to the table but without your sister.
“She said she just wants a little space. She’s smoking a cigarette out there,” he said. You nodded.
“Uhh,” Dean ran a hand through his hair a little anxiously. “I’m gonna go clear the pool table and I’ll get the tab,” Dean said, looking to you and Sam.
“I want to get out of here,” you muttered, your eyes subconsciously flickering back toward the hallway that led to the restrooms. You looked up at Sam and he nodded before turning to Dean.
“We’ll meet you out at the Impala.”
You exchanged a tight smile with your sister as you walked out into the parking lot. She blew a cloud of smoke from her cigarette and returned it, but her eyes left yours quickly and you noticed how she was anxiously bouncing a knee.
“You guys were right,” you said to Sam as you reached the Impala. You leaned up against the passenger side door, looking out over the nearly empty lot. “I shouldn’t have been drinking so much. That was...stupid,” you said.
His eyes snapped over to you. “Hey—you being drunk does not give that guy an excuse. If anything, it makes it worse. He was trying to take advantage of a situation that made you a little more vulnerable. Like you said, it’s no one’s fault, except his. That includes you.” You watched the muscle in his jaw tense. "I could have killed that guy." His voice was vehement and how he wanted you to meet his eyes so he could study the flecks of color in them and try to read what you were thinking. Every time he thought about the scene he and Dean had rushed into his heart plummeted. What if they hadn’t been able to hear you yell? The thought was just too horrible. He felt sick.
You shuffled a boot on the ground, kicking at a small rock and sending it skittering across the pavement. “Yeah. I know.” The silence stretched for a moment before you looked up at the stars. They were no longer wavering or shimmering—your fear and adrenaline had apparently sobered you up quickly.

The ride back to the bunker was tense, and even the classic rock wailing out from the speakers couldn’t deafen the anxious feeling hanging in the air. When you got home, although you were tired, you knew sleep wasn’t going to come, so you trudged into the library and flopped down on the couch, carelessly pulling off your boots. You leaned back and sighed, your eyes tracing the familiar architecture of the ceiling and the brick archways.
You heard some mumbled exchanges of ‘goodnight’ between Sam, Dean, and your sister, but soft footsteps behind you announced that someone else wasn’t planning on sleep either. You looked over your shoulder to see Sam standing a little awkwardly in the doorway.
“Hey,” you said. Then turning around to look at him more fully. “You okay?”
He let out a dry, sardonic laugh. “I should be asking you that,” he said, stepping more fully into the library and coming around the couch to sit in a nearby chair.
“I’m alright,” you said. “Just—a little too keyed up for sleep I think.”
He nodded. “That makes sense.” Sam’s heart was pounding again as he looked at you. Your eyes flickered down to a reddish-purple bruise forming on his hand, which was resting on his knee. You sat up abruptly and leaned forward.
“Sam,” you said sternly, gently pulling his hand closer to you so you could examine it. You gave him a disapproving look but all Sam could feel was your fingers on his skin.
“It’s fine. Really. It doesn’t hurt.”
“Mhm,” you replied skeptically. “Stay here. You need to ice that.” You climbed to your feet and headed into the kitchen. Dean was eating chips and drinking a glass of water, leaning casually back against the island, staring down at his phone. He looked up as you came in and opened the freezer.
“Hey,” he said. “You alright?” his brow drew down.
“For fuck’s sake, will you two stop asking me that? I’m fine,” you said, grabbing a cold pack out and wrapping it in a dish towel.
“Y/N. That was some seriously scary shit. It’s okay to not be okay,” Dean said. You looked at him seriously and after a moment smiled at him.
“I know,” you said. “But really, I’m okay. Thanks to you and Sam.”
Dean nodded, still a little uneasy.
“Sam, however, seems to have fucked up his hand,” you announced, brandishing the cold pack.
“Mmmm,” Dean said nodding, crunching on another chip. “That second hit was a hell of a punch.” He raised his eyebrows pointedly at you, but you only tore your eyes away, feeling a little rush of heat in the apples of your cheeks.
“Yeah,” you agreed. “It was. Anyway. You going to bed soon?”
“I think so. After my midnight snack,” he said, a boyish grin on his face. He crunched loudly on another chip.
“Alright, well, goodnight,” you said, quickly grabbing him in a tight hug. You headed back out to the library. “Here,” you said, holding the ice pack out to Sam. “Twenty minutes with that. It’ll help.”
Sam thanked you and rested it across his hand before sighing heavily. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from your face. He felt like he was on his tiptoes on the edge of a precipice, teetering and trying to keep his balance. “Hey,” he said. His voice was quiet, almost a whisper, and something about the tone sent his voice through you, like a shot to the heart. Your eyes lifted and met his, a questioning expression on you face. “You ever just wonder if—” he cut himself off abruptly, using his uninjured hand to anxiously rub across his forehead. He stalled out, biting his bottom lip anxiously.
Your heart was beating faster and you waited patiently for him to go on, but he couldn’t. “If…?” you prodded him.
He sighed heavily again and ripped his eyes from yours, looking back down at his hands. “Eh...nothing. Nevermind,” he said. He took a step back from the precipice, fear overwhelming him, bad timing overwhelming him.
You studied his expression, your eyebrows drawn down ever so slightly, trying to puzzle out what he had been about to say and why he had stopped, but you found no answers. Simply for something to do, Sam picked up a book from the side table and set it in his lap. He dutifully turned pages, his eyes scanning the text, reading, but he heard none of it.
At some point, your eyelids became heavy and you laid down on the couch, your knees slightly bent, hugging one of the throw pillows. Sam watched your breathing grow deeper and heavier and shut the book in his lap, replacing it silently on the side table, discarding the cold pack for his hand, and climbing to his feet. He grabbed the quilt off the back of the chair he had been sitting in and gently covered you up. Then he made the lonely walk back to his bedroom… hoping that your sister was already asleep, so he could simply drift off with that image of you safe and sound peacefully asleep on the couch, in his mind, uncontaminated by the reality that he was going to sleep in the wrong bed.

Your name: submit What is this?
You awoke gently to some sound nearby and blinked, your eyes adjusting to the dim light in the room. “Hey.” Sam’s voice nearby, gentle and soft. He was at the hearth, adding logs to the coals in the fireplace, sparking new flames licking upward. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you up. You looked cold, so…” You noticed then that he had covered you over with a quilt at some point.
You sat up, rubbing sleep from your eyes. “S’okay.” You sat up, adjusting the blanket over you. “Thanks,” you said. “Oof…” You held a hand to your head.
“You alright?” There was sweet concern on Sam’s face. That familiar wrinkle between his brows.
“Head. Hungover,” you said, squeezing your eyes shut tight.
“Ah… Yeah, I thought maybe that would be the case today.” He pointed to the end table. He had set out a big glass of water and a bottle of ibuprofen for you, as well as a plate with some saltine crackers on it.
Sam hesitated for only a split second in surprise before his arms curled around you. He was almost breathless with you against him and he shut his eyes and focused on that feeling—of holding you, of peace, of exhilaration but ease at the same time, of belonging, or comfort. It somehow felt more intimate than anything he had ever done with your sister… He could smell your shampoo and the fabric softener on your clothes. He wondered if you had noticed how hard and fast his heart was pounding.
“Thank you,” you said again, not letting go, shutting your eyes and sinking everything you wished you could say and do into that hug.
“For what?”
At length you pulled back and met his eyes again, your gaze a little more bashful this time. “For last night at the bar. And for the thoughtful hangover cure and the quilt and the fire and just—” you were rapidly losing your nerve, “—for being you.”
Sam was speechless for a moment, his eyes trying to memorize the flecks of endless shades in your irises and the slightly tousled appearance of your hair. “You don’t have to thank me for any of that,” he said.
You gave him a crooked half-smile. “Yes, I do.” You climbed to your feet again, leaving him staring after you, still kneeling beside the fireplace, feeling a loss as the air settled back into the place you had been, heavy like a wave cresting over itself.
You sank back down onto the couch and grabbed the blanket again with a yawn. “What time is it?”
“Uhh,” Sam rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. “It’s about 5,” he said. He’d managed to get maybe an hour and a half of sleep split up with bouts of staring at the ceiling and self-loathing.
“Why are you up? Couldn’t sleep again?” you asked.
He shrugged vaguely. “Yeah, but it’s alright,” he said.
You frowned at him. “It’s really not. What’s going on? Do you want to talk about it?” you offered, grabbing a couple painkillers and swallowing them with a big gulp of water.
Sam didn’t even know how to respond to that. He crossed the room in two long strides and sank into the chair next to the couch. Part of him wanted to scream ‘Yes!’ and just spill everything he was feeling. Maybe if he just said it, all of it, it wouldn’t feel so toxic, like it was eating him from the inside out. But the other part of him was terrified—the thought that there was even a sliver of a possibility that saying it all would ruin what he had now with you, whatever it was—even nothing more than friendship, struck him cold. He sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair. You gave him a sympathetic look. “Well, whatever it is… you should do something about it,” you said. God, take your own advice, you wimp, you thought. But you went on for Sam’s benefit. “Without knowing exactly what’s going on I can’t give you better advice but… maybe talk to a doctor, or Dean, or my sister, or a therapist, or… an exorcist or shaman maybe?” you added with a laugh.
Sam smiled at you but it only lasted a few seconds before his face fell again. “I should let you sleep some more,” he said, getting to his feet.
“Don’t bother,” you responded. “I always forget how messed up my sleep is after drinking. If only we could all be like Dean and just be dead to the world for 13 hours straight after overindulgence...”
“I don’t know how he does it,” Sam said, shaking his head.
“It’s completely unfair,” you agreed, standing and stretching. “Let me see your hand. How is it today?”
Sam tried to deflect. “Oh, uhh… It’s fine,” he said.
You gave him a discerning look. “It’s fine so that’s why you’re hiding it behind your back?”
He gritted his teeth and gave you a slightly guilty smile. “It—it looks way worse than it is,” he said.
“Sam—let me see it.”
He started to back toward the doorway giving you a tight smile. “It’s really fine,” he argued, trying to disarm you, putting the couch between you and him.
“Sam!” you said in surprise. “Let me see!”
“Honestly, it’s nothing!”
“Samuel Winchester, if you don’t let me see it right now, you’re going to regret it…”
Now he let out a laugh, his face lighting up. “Okay, first of all… Don’t ever call me that again. Second, you think I’m scared of you? Especially right now? You’re hungover,” he said, still backing toward the doorway, a grin on his face, knowing that would fire you up.
You started around the couch toward him. “You should be scared.”
“What are you gonna do about it?” He gave you one last look and turned and ran.
“Son of a—” You raced after him. Any headache you had suddenly vanished and you were trying not to be too loud chasing after him, not wanting to wake up Dean and your sister. “Damn you and your long legs, Sam!” You thought you heard him go into the kitchen so you raced around the corner and darted inside but looked around in confusion when you saw it was empty. “…Sam? AHH!”
Suddenly, strong arms around your waist from behind you, picking you up playfully and swinging you around before dropping you back down on your feet. He was laughing and you could feel it resonating in his chest. You spun around to face him and hit him good-humoredly in the arm. “You ass! God!”
This only made him laugh more. One of his arms was still around you, settled on your lower back, leaving you pulled in rather close together. The smile lighting up his face seemed to have banished the dark circles from beneath his eyes and he looked carefree. You wished it would stay that way. God, you loved his smile… and the way it sent light dancing in his eyes, scattering blue-greys and olive green and amber and honey-colored refractions. “You’re lucky I didn’t have a weapon on me,” you scolded him, but unable to prevent a matching grin from spreading on your face. “You should know better than to startle a hunter.” You felt his hand flatten out gently on your back and his fingers trailed across it as he parted from you, sending chills and electricity running up to the top of your head.
The smile stayed on his face. “Sorry,” he said.
“No, you’re not,” you countered. “Now, seriously, give me your hand.”
This time he begrudgingly obliged and held out his injured hand for you to examine, bracing for your reaction. But he was grateful for the unimpeded time to examine your face as you looked it over, and for the gentle touch of your skin on his. “I really think it just looks worse than it is,” he said.
There was significant swelling across his knuckles and angry dark purple and black bruises. You looked up and caught his eyes again. “Sam…”
He shrugged vaguely. “Still worth it,” he said. Now his voice was serious and quiet again, and he watched a flash of something in your eyes but it dissipated too quickly for him to decipher.
You sighed. “This looks broken. You’re going to the doctor today,” you said.
He didn’t argue. He didn’t say anything. He was worried if he did you would let go of him. It had been hard enough to slip his arm from around you when he felt the moment pass when he should have. I am so screwed, he thought.
“And you should NOT drive all the way to town one-handed,” you said. You paused thoughtfully and then released his hand gently and stepped back. “Ask my sister to take you. You need an x-ray for sure.”
That felt like a punch to the gut. Just the mention of her shattered the bubble of illusion Sam had felt himself hiding in, just soaking in whatever little bit of you he could at any given moment. But he nodded dutifully. “Yeah, I will. You’re probably right.”
You gave him a small smile and raised your eyebrows at him. “I usually am,” you said.

“Hey, sis,” you sister said, grabbing you into a one-armed hug as you sat with your coffee at the kitchen island.
“Morning.”
“How are you? Hungover?” she smiled a little at you, but it was tempered by another expression.
“Had a bit of a headache but it’s gone now.” Your heart fluttered as you again thought about how sweetly Sam had set out the hangover cures for you in the library.
“Good,” she said, pouring herself a big mug of coffee too and leaning on the other side of the island across for you. “How are you with… everything else?” she asked.
You considered her thoughtfully for a moment and nodded. “I’m fine. Really.” You set down your mug and met her eyes. “Look, I want you to know that none of that happening last night was your fault. And Sam was just upset and he shouldn’t have taken it out on you. I told him as much, too…”
She nodded straightened up. “I know. I know it wasn’t. But, honestly, all that matters is that you’re okay.”
You gave her a half-smile. “I am. I’m fine.”
“Good,” she said with a heavy sigh.
“Did you talk to Sam yet this morning?” you asked her. He had disappeared after your discussion in the kitchen and you hadn’t seen him since.
“Mmm,” she shook her head as she sipped her coffee. “No. It’s weird, I think he’s been having trouble sleeping or something. He’s been gone when I wake up for like the last week.”
How could you not know that he isn’t sleeping? How could it take you a week to realize that? you wondered. “Oh—yeah. Maybe you should ask him about it?” you suggested.
“Yeah… maybe… I probably should. He just—sometimes I don’t think he wants to talk about that stuff, you know?”
Your brow furrowed. “Hmm.” You’d always found Sam to be pretty open with you, but you had to admit that lately you did get the feeling that there was something going on with him he was concealing.
“I should try though. You’re right. In any case, it has really been cutting in on our recreational time together, if you know what I mean,” she said with a conspiratorial wink.
You felt sick. “Ha… yeah…” You cleared your throat and tried to veer the conversation away from where it was going. “Anyway, I think he might have broken his hand last night—umm, when he punched that creep in the face… So, you should probably drive him to urgent care today to have it looked at. He shouldn’t drive that far one-handed.”
“Shit! Seriously? Oh, poor babe. God, I hope he broke that guy’s face too,” she said with venom.
“He might have. The second hit was a pretty stellar punch.”
“Good! Fuck him. …Oh, shit—I can’t take him today.” She pressed a hand to her temple. “I have plans. I’m going to meet a friend for lunch and then we’re gonna go see that new suspense thriller that just came out.” She chewed her fingernail. “I really don’t want to cancel. We have such a hard time matching our schedules…” She looked up at you hopefully, giving you a pleading, toothy smile.
“…What?” you said, your tone a little strained.
“Could you drive him? Pleeeeease,” she begged you.
You sighed. “Don’t you think you should be there? He might have broken his hand,” you emphasized.
She bit her bottom lip. “Am I the worst girlfriend?” she asked you. “I’ve just really been looking forward to this! It’s been a while since Sarah and I hung out and… it is seriously hard to get our schedules matched up.”
You rolled your eyes at her. “Well, honestly I think you should be making this a priority.” You tried to keep your tone from sounding too harsh, but you also wanted her to realize how you felt about her trying to bail.
“… Look, it’s not like I would get to, like, go into the x-ray room with him. I’d just be sitting in the waiting room. He won’t care!” she said.
You felt yourself clenching your jaw and gave her one last disapproving look but she seemed to be impervious to it. “Fine. Me or Dean can take him,” you said.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she said, reaching across the counter and grabbing your hand and giving it a squeeze. “Where is he anyway? I want to say good morning.”
You shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t seen him for a while. Maybe he went for a run or something.” You got up, leaving your empty mug on the counter. “I’ll see you later. I’m gonna go talk to Dean about taking Sam.”
Dean’s bedroom door was open and the blankets were all ruffled but it was empty. The next logical place to look for Dean Winchester was, of course, the garage. You heard the familiar sound of metal on metal and classic rock blaring from a radio echoing in the cavernous space as you entered.
Weaving your way through the rows of cars, you found him underneath the Impala. You lifted a foot and kicked the bottom of one of his boots, eliciting an expletive, shortly followed by him sliding out on the mechanic’s creeper. “Hey,” he said, sitting up, his legs stretched out in front of him. You leaned back on the Impala beside him. “What’s up, drunky?” he asked you, that typical mischievous glint in his eye. “How are you feelin’?” he asked, getting up and grabbing a rag nearby to wipe his hands off.
“Ha ha ha,” you said sarcastically, pulling a face at him. “I’m perfectly not-hungover,” you said. You strategically left out Sam’s sweet gesture to you.
“That’s a miracle,” he said. “You’re usually such a giant baby—ow!” he laughed as you pinched his arm. “Hey, but seriously. You okay? Ya know, that asshole last night—”
You swallowed the tight lump in your throat and tried to push the feeling of rising panic at the thought of what had happened away. “Really, I’m good, and I just don’t want to talk about it… or think about it.”
Dean nodded, his expression now serious. “So, what’s up?”
You turned around and leaned your hands on the edge of the engine compartment. “Well. I think Sam’s hand is broken.”
Dean groaned. “I was afraid of that… that second hit. He was so mad he didn’t hold his form quite right.” You nodded.
“I told my sister she should take him to get it looked at but she is—busy today.” Dean could hear the annoyance in your voice. “She’s too busy to take her boyfriend to urgent care because she’s going to lunch and a movie…”
“Hmm. Mhm,” he said, leaning back against the car.
“What?” you asked, looking over. He shrugged.
“Nothin’.”
You scoffed. “Well, obviously not nothing.”
He laughed. “I know better than to say every thought that pops in my head… So, what’s the deal?”
“Well, he needs someone to drive him,” you said, giving Dean a pointed look.
“I’m not taking him. I’ve got Baby half taken apart and was looking forward to an entire day of tinkering out here.” He gave you a smug smile.
You stared at him. “We both know you could have her back together in no time if you wanted to.”
“Correct,” he said, pointing a finger at you. “If I wanted to. Why would I want to rush to throw her back together just so I can go sit on my ass in a waiting room? There is a perfectly capable person standing right next to me with a completely put-together, functional vehicle ready to go.”
Your heart beat a little faster. “Why?” you asked.
“Why what?” The smug smile was still on his face and he carelessly slung the rag in his hands over his shoulder.
“Dean,” you said, your tone a little warning. This only elicited a gruff laugh from him.
“I don’t see what the problem is. I think it’d be good for the two of you to spend some more together. Alone,” he grinned.
“To what end? He’s dating my sister.”
“Yeah. I know. That means you can’t hang out? Hey, I didn’t say go get a hotel and fuck him, did I?”
“DEAN!” You felt your entire face burning red, which was obviously the desired reaction because he laughed heartily.
“Look,” he said through another friendly laugh. “I just think you have to stop dancing around this. Maybe if you hang out more like you used to it’ll—I don’t know—shake something loose. Either you’ll be brave enough to spill your guts or you’ll realize what an idiot he is and get over him. Something! You’re just sitting around pining and—quite frankly it’s starting to irritate me.” He flashed you another boyish grin, obviously pretty pleased with himself.
“We do hang out,” you argued. Flashes of the mounting tension and little touches and smiles surged forward in your mind.
“Yeah, I’ve seen you hang out,” Dean said, rolling his eyes. “You’re both all—” he stopped himself quickly before he said too much. “Just—just drive him. It’s like a twenty-minute drive. Try and relax and just enjoy being with someone you like. Don’t overthink it, Y/N. Seriously.”
You crossed your arms and stared at him. “I hate you.”
“Love you too,” he said. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have Baby’s undercarriage to attend to.”
“That’s what she said…” you murmured as you watched him disappear beneath the Impala again. His gruff laughter drifted out.
“Nice. Now go find Sam and take him to get that crippled hand looked at! We need him back to punching shape ASAP.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah…”
_ _ _ _ _ _
You went about your morning routine and eventually heard your sister and Sam’s voices drifting down the hallway toward you. You stepped out into the hall and Sam came into view, obviously just back from a long run.
“Hey,” you said. “Did I just hear my sister? Where’d she go?”
“Oh, yeah. She’s headed into town for lunch and a movie with her friend Sarah,” Sam said.
“Oh, okay. Yeah, she said something about that. Um… Since she’s busy and Dean is working on the Impala, I’ll take you to get your hand looked at whenever you’re ready.”
Sam gave you a half-smile, but his heart was leaping just at the thought of spending some time alone with you without the possibility of interruptions, even if it was just the 20-minute card ride back and forth from town. “Sure. Just let me shower and get cleaned up,” he said, jutting his thumb over his shoulder in the direction of his room.
“Good run? You were gone kind of a long time,” you inquired. ‘Seemed longer than usual.” Oh, God… is that weird that I noticed that? Is that too obvious?
Wow. She noticed that, Sam thought, his heart skipping a beat again. You always seemed to notice the littlest things about him. You instantly picked up on his moods, his anxiety. You noticed when he was wearing a new piece of clothing and when he got a haircut. Was that just being an attentive friend of…? He anxiously averted his eyes. “Yeah. Yeah, good run. Just—needed some time to think and to blow off some stress, you know?”
“I do.” You knew exactly what he meant. You pretty much felt that every damn day for one reason or another.
Sam ran a hand over the back of his neck, feeling inexplicably nervous. “Alright, well, I’ll let you know when I’m ready,” he said, and he headed to his room.
About a half hour later, Sam was in your doorway, freshly showered and feeling a little more like himself—maybe it really just was the thought that he could relax and just be himself around you. He didn’t have to worry about playing some role that was expected of him and he didn’t feel like he was lying to anyone (except for maybe himself). You didn’t notice him standing in the doorway at first and it gave him leave to watch you for a moment with a warm feeling blooming in his chest. You were at your computer, your chin propped on one hand, obviously deep in though. “Ready when you are,” he said, causing you to look up suddenly.
“Sure. Let’s do it. Sooner is probably better, right?” you said. Sam followed you through the garage to your car.
“Heading to get your hand checked?” Dean asked Sam as he passed him and the Impala. Dean set down his tools. “Lemme see it.”
Sam sighed heavily but begrudgingly held out his hand for Dean to see. “Goddamn, Sammy. You really did fuck that thing up. Come on, did you forget everything dad taught us about good punching form?”
Sam rolled his eyes. “I had something else on my mind in the moment, funny enough.”
Dean nodded, feeling a wave of anger swelling in his chest at the thought. “Yeah, I get it. It was still a good hit. Guy went down like a bag of bricks.”
Sam nodded, seeing that you were waiting for him at your car and he rushed to catch up. “Yeah... I’ll keep you posted,” he yelled back to Dean, who was watching him now with a somewhat smug smile on his face.
It was a beautiful day out and the weather was sunny but mild. The wind whipping in through your open window and the radio playing your favorite songs was refreshing, but having Sam next to you in the passenger seat was even better. You imagined that his hand was incredibly painful, but somehow he still was in an upbeat, positive mood. You talked and laughed the whole drive to the doctor’s office—about everything and nothing at the same time. And Sam was relieved that your sister’s name didn’t come up once. And he didn’t know it, but so were you…
“Alright,” you said, throwing your car into park. “Here we are. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for them to see you. And I also hope it is good news.” Sam watched your brow wrinkle as you glanced over at his hand again. It seemed even more swollen now.
“It’s alright. I’m sure they have some blocks or something in there to keep me occupied if we have to wait,” he joked, climbing out. You fell into stride next to him and checked in at the front desk of the urgent care area. You were lucky—they were going to be able to see Sam right away.
“Good luck,” you said, starting to take a seat.
“Thanks. I’ll keep you posted.”
In about 20 minutes or so, a nurse came to find you in the waiting area. “Are you Sam’s girlfriend?”
You heart skipped a beat and you stood suddenly, feeling your cheeks burn a little red. “Oh—we’re not—”
“He wanted me to bring you back to sit with him while we wait for the radiologist to read the radiographs.”
“Oh. Alright. Is everything okay?” you asked, following her through the labyrinth of stark white halls with seemingly endless doors.
“I think he just wanted some company,” she said, giving you a kind smile.
“Sure. Of course.” You anxiously wrung your hands. Finally, she stopped and knocked on an exam room door and you heard Sam’s voice inside. She held the door open for you to go in and gave you another reassuring smile.
“We’ll be back with those results as soon as we can,” the nurse said, and she bustled off. The door snapped closed behind you and you stepped farther in to see Sam sitting on the end of the exam table in a gown, his clothes folded neatly on a nearby chair. He looked so entirely out of place in that hospital gown and his socks. This tall, strong man somehow looked like a little kid. It was adorable, and you tried to ignore the fluttering in your stomach. Being with someone at a doctor’s office or a hospital when they were hurt, vulnerable, mortal, was strangely intimate and you felt a tinge of annoyance that your sister didn’t seem to recognize that. But in the next breath you were a little thankful she hadn’t… You sank down onto another chair nearby and gave him a questioning look.
“You okay?” you asked.
He nodded. “Yeah. I just really wanted you to see me in this tasteful ensemble,” he said, gesturing to the gown and down to his stocking feet.
You laughed lightly. “It looks great on you,” you said.
“I’m considering asking if I can wear it out. What do you think?”
You tilted your head and considered him with a mock thoughtful expression. “Mmm… I don’t know.”
“Well, I guess I should ask you how comfortable you are with the idea of my bare ass on your car seat. That could be the deal breaker,” he joked. “Oh my God,” you said, your cheeks coloring but your eyes lighting up as you laughed. “Are you serious??”
He shook his head, also laughing now. “No. They let me keep my boxers on,” he said. “But it made you laugh.”
“Why did they make you change anyway? It’s just your hand,” you said.
“Ahh. Yeah… well, they’re going to have to set it and the nurse said something about me likely needing an IV with some good painkillers.”
“Oh, god… is it bad?”
Sam shrugged vaguely, trying to downplay it. “It wasn’t a walk in the park when the doctor was examining it, but I’m fine,” he said, wanting to reassure you. The last thing he wanted was for you to feel guilty, but he could tell by your expression that was exactly how you were feeling.
You anxiously chewed your bottom-lip. God, Sam loved that… “I’m really sorry, Sam. This is my fault. If I hadn’t been so drunk I could have punched the guy out myself…” you muttered.
“Hey—knock it off,” he scolded you, causing your eyes to shoot up to meet his. “In no way is this your fault. It is only that creep’s fault. And if you had punched him out, you might be the one sitting here in a weird gown that somehow feels like it is both made of cheap fabric and paper at the same time,” he laughed. “And honestly, I wouldn’t want you going through this pain for anything… Or any pain really…” Sam trailed off. You held his eyes as long as you dared but eventually succumbed to nervousness. You were a little overwhelmed by Sam’s assertion. That meant something, right?
There was a thick feeling between your lungs that you couldn’t identify as you stared down at your hands, but you could sense that Sam’s multifaceted eyes were still on your face until there was a knock at the door a few moments later.
You and Sam both looked up as the doctor came in. “Well, Sam, I’m afraid you have a broken and somewhat displaced bone in that hand.” The doctor sat down on a nearby rolling stool. “It’s what we call a brawler’s or boxer’s break in the business,” he said.
You gulped, again feeling guilty and sorry that he had to deal with all this. “Does he need surgery?” you asked, your brow deeply furrowed now and low over your eyes.
“It’s a possibility, but I’m hopeful that we can get it back into place without it. We’ll have to set it and then you’ll need to wear a plaster splint for a while. And follow up again with an orthopedist or hand specialist in about a week to make sure it’s healing alright. We’ll set it and take new radiographs to make sure everything is back where it needs to be and then go from there. Okay?” The doctor gave Sam a tight smile. “Any questions?”
“What does the recovery time look like for this? How long would he have to be in a cast?” you asked.
“Probably have six weeks in the cast, and you’ll need to do some physical therapy afterward of course because the muscles will be weak from disuse. That can take 4-6 weeks to get you back to normal strength again, but I’ve seen motivated people do it safely in less time. Any other questions, Sam?”
Sam shook his head. You tried to read his expression but he was either concealing that he was upset or was completely fine with the news that he would be out of commission for a while. “Alright, well we are going to get started here. Have you taken any painkillers today?” the doctor asked him.
“Just some ibuprofen early this morning, around five,” Sam said.
The doctor made a note on his pad of paper. “Alright. Well, we are going to get you on some of the good stuff for this. I’m sure you’re in a lot of pain. So a nurse will come in and get you set up with an IV and some painkillers. We’ll give you some local anesthetic to numb your hand so we can set it, and then we’ll do some more radiographs.”
Sam nodded and thanked the doctor, who left again, leaving the two of you alone.
Sam could see anxiety written on your face. “Sam, I am so sorry—”
“Hey. Stop that. Really. It doesn’t matter,” he said. “If I could go back and do it over again, I’d hit that guy again. And maybe another time after that,” he said, giving you a small, kind smile. It didn’t soothe the unease and regret on your face though. “I need a vacation from hunting anyway,” he added. “Come here.” He gently inclined his chin in a beckoning nod.
You stood, wringing your hands and came to stand next to him where he sat on the exam table, still towering above you even from his seated position.
“Y/N, listen to me. I would accept a lot more than a broken hand to keep you safe. I mean it. All that matters here is that you’re okay.” You met his eyes and they were flickering back and forth between yours and you wanted more than anything to grab him and kiss him and let everything you felt and thought about him spill out, but with difficulty you swallowed that feeling and it contributed to the ever-growing knot in your chest. But you settled for standing on your tiptoes and throwing your arms around his neck and hugging him as tightly as you dared. His arm wrapped around you immediately, and you didn’t know it but Sam was shutting his eyes tight just like you were and trying to commit that moment to memory, the feeling of having your arms around his neck and the weight of you against him.
You finally broke apart and stuttered a little awkwardly. “I—I should give Dean a call and let him know what’s going on. And maybe my—my sister, too…” You gave Sam one last warm look. “I’ll be right back.” You stepped just outside the exam room with your cell and dialed Dean. He picked up on the second ring, obviously still in the garage as he had to turn the volume way down on some classic rock music blaring in the background.
“Y/N—hey. How’s Sammy?”
You sighed heavily into the phone. “His hand is broken. The doctor thinks they can avoid him needing surgery but he’s going to have to be in a cast for six weeks…”
“Six weeks?!” Dean repeated, running a hand through his hair. “Damn. That’s a long time to not be hunting. How’s he doing with it?”
“Well, you know Sam. It’s hard to tell. But he says he’s okay with it and he’s just glad that I’m okay…” you trailed off and Dean could tell your mind was wandering elsewhere.
“He’s not lying about that,” Dean said. “And I know saying this is probably worthless but try not to feel guilty about this. For the last time, it is not your fault.”
“Yeah… anyway, this could take a while. They’re going to get him on an IV and give him some painkillers before they set the bone in his hand, and then he will need to have more radiographs. So, we could be gone a while.”
“Alright. Well, hey, shoot me a text with an update after they set his hand and let me know how he is.”
“Okay, I will. I’m gonna try and get a hold of my sister to let her know what’s up. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Good idea. Talk to you later,” Dean said, and he hung up.
You dialed your sister, crossing your fingers that she was still at lunch and would actually answer her phone but it went straight to voicemail and you swore under your breath. You left a message explaining what was going on and just as you were finishing a nurse was headed your way with an IV bag. You followed her back into the exam room.
“Alright, Sam,” she said, hanging the bag up on a nearby stand. “We’re going to have you feeling better in no time here.” She got some supplies ready and gently took his uninjured arm and started cleaning it.
“I talked to Dean,” you said. “And I left my sister a message. She didn’t answer. Maybe she’s already in the movie. I can go wait out front again and if—” “Would you stay?” Sam asked you, so eagerly he interrupted you. “It’d be nice if you stayed.”
You smiled at him, just a small one, but it was genuine and it sent sparks lighting in your eyes. “Of course,” you said.
“Thanks.” The nurse got Sam’s IV set and told him to lay back on the table as she pulled out the extension to accommodate his long frame.
“Those painkillers are going to hit you soon, hun, and we don’t want you falling off the table,” she teased.
“So I really am getting the good stuff,” Sam commented. She laughed.
“Well, honestly, we were all wondering how you seemed to be handling that break so well on just ibuprofen. But nothing to worry about now, we’ll get you fixed up,” she said. “The doctor will be back in soon.” She left you and Sam alone again.
“Oh, boy…” he said suddenly, his voice sounding soft and a little dreamy.
“Hmm?” you asked him, looking up from your phone. Still nothing from your sister.
“I think those painkillers are starting to kick in,” he said with a small, self-conscious laugh. “Listen, Y/N,” he said, turning his eyes to you. “I’m just going to go ahead and apologize now in case I say or do anything embarrassing or otherwise ridiculous,” he said, smiling at you.
You gave him a fond look. “I won’t hold it against you. You’re on drugs,” you laughed.
Sam looked back up at the ceiling. “Thank God,” he said.
