(this is in the context of an ANEURISM IV that lasts a lot longer between cycles and is just generally slower)
sanitars undergo forced cybernetic enhancement upon conscription/deputisation. the process takes about a day and occurs in/under the Nexus, automated by machines. the sanitars get a recovery period of about 3 days, and then light duty for another week before they’re cleared to fully patrol the city/fight in the “war”.
the changes they go through include:
- partial or complete removal of the occipital lobe, to be replaced with a cortex-issued processor that cannot see red/green*
- other small adjustments to the brain to alter the personality of sanitars to better fit their purpose (being subordinate, following orders, cleaning without complaint, etc)
- removal of eyes, replaced by two optics (cameras) (two to allow for depth perception)
- instillation of a large screen on the face, to be used to display the HUD / limit boxes to the sanitar and the Consul’s Eye logo to the public. The screen is a compact CRT screen and causes the sanitar to see scanlines in their vision
- port through which to administer Combat Juice and other important drugs
- input of sanitar’s genome into the system to allow for genome-locked cortex-only devices to be used (eg guns)
- removal of nose to make space for the CRT
- removal of part of upper jaw / teeth to make room for CRR - food is consumed with a straw (or something like it) through the gas mask’s valve or external port.
- removal of external ear, replaced by audibles (microphones)
- installation of cortex radio into ear
- back of head (where piece of skull was removed to install cortex optical processor) is replaced with plastic replica, covered with “beanie” for (limited) protection (which is why sanitars get domed in the back of the head all the time + explains lower HP)
*they cannot see green because there’s not really a need for it as there’s basically no green in ANEURISM IV. not having green light sensors in the optics saves the Cortex resources. this is what allows rogues to infiltrate among controllers as they can’t see their green eye.
they cannot see red because the Cortex is aware of the psychological effects of seeing large amounts of blood and gore and haven’t managed to turn off that part of the brain yet - so instead they just make it really hard to see. this has the disadvantage of making it hard for Sanitars to see rot pustules, so their main focus is protecting the city before they focus on cleaning.
