‘Santolina’ (Bachelor’s Buttons)
Spring, Melbourne, Australia 2020
Plant of the Day
Saturday 13 June 2020
The mounds of the small, evergreen shrub, Santolina pinnata subsp. neapolitana 'Edward Bowles' (rosemary-leaved lavender cotton) created their own landscape. The creamy white flower heads arise from the aromatic, grey-green leaves. This plant needs a sunny location with a free draining soil. Here the mounds form a background for other plants with more irregular growth.

Time for a Wall House herb garden update! On a visit during the first week in August 2019 we found the garden looking lush and healthy. At least fifteen different varieties of herbs are growing there, including rue, tansy, santolina, dill, lavender, chives, basil, lovage, lamb’s ear, and sage. There’s also a large buddleia bush to attract bees and butterflies and and a butterfly house. Stop by to have a look and smell the glorious scents before the season is over!
Grey Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus)
Plant of the Day
Monday 22 July 2019
Able to cope with the dry, free draining, sunny conditions of the Mediterranean borders of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, was the evergreen Santolina chamaecyparissus var neapolitana (cotton lavender).
