In a sunny location the woody stemmed perennial Artemisia 'Powis Castle' (wormwood) was creating a cloud of billowing silver foliage. This plant does best in a well-drained soil and will be short-lived in a poorly drained site.

Even in the short days of January the Rhodanthemum hosmariense (Moroccan daisy) is still flowering in the dry garden. This woody-based spreading perennial originates from Morocco and so loathes wet winter growing conditions.

Growing best is the full sun, Argyrocytisus battandieri (Moroccan broom, pineapple broom) is a deciduous shrub with trifoliate silvery-grey leaves which covered in silky hairs when young. The clusters of yellow flowers fill the air with the aroma of ripe pineapple and are popular with pollinating insects. This shrub certainly adds an exotic feel to a garden in the summer.

Described as being able to add “a theatrical touch to the border” is the Mediterranean species Cynara cardunculus (globe artichoke, cardoon). This large and vigorous herbaceous perennial can reach 2.5m, forming a clump of silvery-grey leaves up to 1m in length. The flowers are on tall stems and emerge from large buds, the purple thistle flowers attract bees and the seeds are appreciated by flocks of finches.

Ideal for a sunny, sheltered site with a well drained soil, the spreading evergreen shrub, Phlomis italica (Balearic Island sage). This foliage plant has narrow, upstanding leaves covered with white wool to resist drought. The whorls of light pink, hooded flowers are very popular with the local bee population.

The silver foliage of Artemisia ludoviciana (western mugwort) makes a great contrast with the glaucous leaves tinged with purplish-pink and the starry rose-pink flowers of Hylotelephium 'Vera Jameson' (stonecrop). Both these herbaceous perennials need a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and here these conditions are being provided by this raised bed.

Flowing down these steps in the lovely sunken garden at the Attadale Gardens, Wester Ross, Scotland, was Juniperus squamata 'Blue Carpet' (flaky juniper), it narrows the path before releasing you into the space. This evergreen conifer, makes a prostrate shrub with bright blue-grey, needle-like foliage providing all year round interest.
