Your last period was math, you only had minutes until you left school, and you were packing your books into your bag. You were still in middle school, so school wasn't too hard on you.
When the bell finally rang, everyone started walking out, laughing and chatting with their friends. You, on the other hand, had just put your bag on when he suddenly approached you.
Haruchiyo, the boy no one in class talked to much, who only had a few friends.
Haruchiyo approached you with hesitant steps and tried to speak while not really making eye contact. He was never good with words when he was stressed.
"Can we meet at the park next to school? I want to tell you something there."
Haruchiyo didn't usually communicate with you much in class, but you weren't on bad terms. You just weren't close enough to communicate.
You thought about the reason for his request for a while, but then you answered with a smile on your face that brought a slight blush to his cheeks.
"Okay, I'll come. But I can't stay for too long, I have to go home."
Haruchiyo nodded quickly at your acceptance and ran out of the classroom, as if he had somewhere to get to. You, on the other hand, thought his intentions wasn't anything big, so you walked out of the classroom at a slower pace.
When you left the school building you looked around, trying to see where he was, but he was nowhere to be found.
Even though this thought crossed your mind for a moment, you walked towards the park next to the school. When you entered the park, there was no one at first. For a moment you actually thought he was tricking you and you started to feel a mixture of sadness and anger strongly. But at that moment you heard Haruchiyo's voice behind you, his hands were behind his back; as if he was hiding something.
"I'm sorry, I had to stop by somewhere.."
When you turned to look at him, he couldn't meet your gaze again.
"It's okay.. but for a moment I thought you were tricking me."
Haruchiyo's eyes widened in sudden fear; he didn't want to appear like that in your eyes.
"What?! I would never do something like that!"
An involuntary giggle escaped your lips; he was just—so cute.
“Anyway, what were you going to tell me?”
Haruchiyo squirmed under your gaze as he cleared his throat. Then he pulled his trembling, stress-sweated hands out from where they were hidden and handed you a bouquet.
It was a bouquet with three pink lilies. He'd bought it with his allowance, using the excuse of 'buying lunch at school'.
Your eyes widened as Haruchiyo tried to speak without slurring his words. He probably wrote down what he was going to say beforehand because he was trying to remember it as if he were constantly speaking from memory.
"I—uhh.. I like you and.. I wanted to buy you these flowers because you look like them—no, they look like you—or vice versa."
When Haruchiyo started to slur his words, he huffed and looked at everywhere but you, muttering softly enough for you to hear.
"It's just.. You're so beautiful and sweet, so kind. You're so kind even to me. And that.. I like it."
Your cheeks were flushed as you listened to his words, and you felt speechless for a moment. Your eyes just shifted to the bandages around the corners of his lips involuntary. His biggest insecurity. When Haruchiyo realized this, he immediately tried to pull the bouquet back, feeling embarrassed and upset, while one hand tried to cover one of the bandages, as if on reflex He thought you were going to reject him.
"I—I'm sorry.. I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable."
"No no, lilies are my.. favorite. I like them."
These sentences left your lips before you could even think. Your hands seemed to move automatically as they reached for the bouquet. Your fingers touched for a moment, and Haruchiyo was still bright red but surprised. He hadn't thought you would accept the bouquet. When you took the bouquet in your hand, a shy but sweet smile came to your face.
Haruchiyo had a shy expression on his face, but he still tried to speak.
"I thought you'd be angry at me, or disgusted with me."
As he said these words, his hands went to the bandages around his mouth, as if to cover them. Hearing this made something in your heart ache; he was too innocent like this.
"Why would I be disgusted? Those bandages... they mean nothing to me."
Haruchiyo wasn't used to hearing this, but he couldn't help the smile that appeared on his face as he dropped his hands to his sides. But then he reached into his pockets as if he'd remembered something.
"Oh, and one more thing."
After searching for a moment, he found a rosy pink card and placed it among the lilies. On the card, it read,
"With love from Haruchiyo."
Small doodles of hearts and flowers were adorned around the edges of the paper.
"I... I didn't know you felt this way about me."
"I can't usually express my feelings very well."
He was still surprised that you had accepted the flowers. For a moment, you put them back in his hands, took out a piece of paper and a pen from your bag and started writing something. Haruchiyo watched you with a confused expression as you held the bouquet.
"What are you doing? I didn't say anything bad, did I?"
When you didn't respond, he started to worry about what he said to you. You finished writing and put the pen back in your bag, then took the bouquet back from him and handed him the paper with a shy smile. Haruchiyo's eyes widened when he saw what was written on the paper.
"This is our home phone. You can call me from there whenever you want."
"Yes, but don't call me at night, or my older sister will be very angry with me."
Haruchiyo was trying hard not to smile in front of you as if he had achieved the biggest victory in the world. He nodded enthusiastically and quickly folded the paper and put it in his pocket as he spoke.
"Okay! I won't call at inconvenient hours, I promise."
"But we can't date until high school, you have to wait."
Haruchiyo hadn't expected you to say that, and when he heard it, a worried pout appeared on his face.
"Until high school?! There's still 2 years! How am I supposed to wait??"
You put on a fake sad expression on your face face, just to toy with him a little.
"Are you going to give up on me just because of this?"
Haruchiyo froze for a moment, a million thoughts racing through his head. but he was sure of one thing.
There was no way he was going to give up on you.
He huffed and puffed, but agreed nonetheless.
"Okay then, I'll wait until high school."
When you heard that, you let out a breath you didn't realize you were holding. Smiling, you took a step towards the park exit to return home, but with a sudden burst of courage, you stopped and kissed Haruchiyo on the cheek. You were both bright red. Haruchiyo's heart felt like it was going to explode as you ran away, he held his cheek with his hand but a childish smile appeared on his face.
The sound of your running echoed on the sidewalk. The night was colorful as always, but tonight there was a different kind of excitement. You were looking everywhere for Haruchiyo.
As you were running, you came across a group of gang members, your eyes only searching for one of them. And when your eyes finally settled on him, a different kind of excitement filled you. You started to approach Haruchiyo, and the people around you watched with puzzled expressions. Haruchiyo, on the other hand, acted calmer when he noticed you, but he straightened up. He had a black mask on to hide hic scars. He wasn't as shy around you anymore; on the contrary, he was more confident.
You were in high school after all.
The other members were surprised when they noticed you walking towards Haruchiyo. They hadn't expected him to be seeing any girls. He quickly walked in front of you and looked you up and down. You were out of breath, and he raised an eyebrow.
"What are you doing here?"
"We have things to talk about!"
"While you're in your pajamas?"
You looked at yourself. Yeah, you were in your pajamas since you snuck out of the house. While he was trying not to laugh, you slapped Haruchiyo lightly on the chest and spoke, frowning.
"Oh sure, I'll run away from home just to hear the proposal I've been waiting for, while you joke around, is that it?"
Haruchiyo had a soft smile on his face when he heard that you came to hear this proposal. Still, he couldn't resist playing with you.
"The proposal? But it's been 2 years."
"So? you said you'd wait."
"Do I even want you anymore?"
When you heard that, a surprised but more like sad expression appeared on your face. Haruchiyo couldn't help but laugh when he realized you took his joke seriously and pulled you towards him. he placed his hands on your cheeks and lifted your head, lowering his mask and pressing a kiss to your forehead.
"Don't worry, I still only want you. So.. will you be my girlfriend? Officially this time."
Haruchiyo's gaze was more loving, more sincere than ever. It was a look that was special to you. You smiled and kissed his cheek. That was all the answer he needed.
"Yes.. yes, I will be your girlfriend. Officially."
"Okay, but now i have to get you home before your sister catches you, love."
"I'll see you at school tomorrow anyway!"
Haruchiyo nodded, a happy, chaotic laugh escaping his lips. You were lovers now. And the two-year wait was definitely worth it.
