Top Ten on Repeat

This wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I don’t think this strictly follows the numbers. And it’s over a much broader period than expected too lol.

Underdog Victorious by Jill Sobule is undoubtedly number one. But her entire Fuck 7th Grade album should have made up my top 10 if we were looking at top repeats since May. Y’all should pay your respects and give it a listen. It’s so full of heart and homosexuality (bisexuality). It’s the cast recording to her off broadway show, but it’s also a lot of her hits. And that version of I Kissed a Girl changes the lyrics to “I kissed a girl, it changed the world” which I love. The original lyrics were “won’t change the world”

Anyway. Never getting over Jill, fucking legend that she was.

As for the rest of my top ten, I had Cinnamon Park on repeat well before Jill even died.

And I’ve mercifully not had hostile government takeover stuck in my head for a while.

And sometimes you just need some 1992 Melissa Etheridge in your life. Never Enough. Although I think I may be one of the only millennial dykes that feels that way?

And last but not least, and another reason I think this list is a little off, is Céline Dion’s album Unison, which I listened to for the first time in April, the 35th (??!) anniversary of its release. On an endless loop while I locked in and finished an art piece for a local earth day event. The entire album should be on the list lol.

And maybe Céline wasn’t actually last (and maybe I’m in the mood to start every paragraph with And) because I could not stop listening to that Sinéad O’Connor song after they covered it on the SNL 50th.

Hey there! For the ship asks, to throw some femslash your way, how about Rebecca x Keeley and/or Grace x Frankie?

Huzzah femslash! I’m having a great time with these so I’ll do both.

Rebecca x Keeley (tall and small gal pals of my heart)

Who’s the cuddler? Keeley is more aware of herself as a person who wants cuddling and closeness on a regular basis, so she and Rebecca both think of Keeley as the cuddly one. But Rebecca understands how much it means to her, so as she gets more comfortable with that level of closeness she often instigates, making it clear that she wants Keeley to settle right up next to her on the couch or in bed as they’re falling asleep.

Who makes the bed? They live in a state of chaos (mitigated by the weekly visits from Mina the cleaner) until one of them snaps and makes the bed, clears the nightstands of all the cosmetics and books and wine glasses, etc.

Who wakes up first? Rebecca often doesn’t sleep very well, and she used to resent it but now she actually appreciates how frequently she’s up early and can just read or lie awake with her thoughts and enjoy Keeley‘s presence.

Who has the weird taste in music? Depends on what weird means. They like different music and enjoy introducing each other to their faves. They’re both weird!

Who is more protective? Rebecca is more protective about experiential things—it hurts her heart to think about people underestimating Keeley or judging her for choices she’s made, and she has no tolerance for the kind of sexism she watches Keeley put up with. Keeley is more privately protective—she’s very aware of dates that are difficult for Rebecca, like the day she married Rupert or the day her father died, and spends a lot of time quietly offering support and trying her best to keep the hurts from getting to her too much.

Who sings in the shower? They both do, frequently and with delight.

Who cries during movies? They both do! I’m picturing the “hire your best friend” scene happening basically anytime they watch something sad.

Who spends the most while out shopping? Rebecca has more of her own money and is less careful with it in that she’ll buy something expensive without thinking about it much. Keeley has her own wealth now, but she tends to oscillate between being a bit impulsive and going through stretches of trying not to shop much.

Who kisses more roughly? Keeley. She’s tiny and fierce and could easily knock Rebecca over with the force of her love.

Who is more dominant? In the bedroom things tend to be pretty mutual/switch-y, but Keeley tends to be more comfortable with asking for specific things, like if she wants Rebecca to be rough with her or if she wants to try something that will require a lot of Rebecca’s trust.

My rating of the ship from 1-10. 10/10!

Grace x Frankie (dysfunctional vibrator entrepreneurs of my heart)

Who’s the cuddler? Frankie is much more comfortable with how much she wants to be cuddled, but does that make Grace the cuddler since she’s so obliging?

Who makes the bed? Grace, begrudgingly but unfailingly.

Who wakes up first? Grace, begrudgingly but unfailingly.

Who has the weird taste in music? Definitely Frankie. Her tastes are more eclectic than Grace’s, but Grace enjoys way more than she lets on.

Who is more protective? They’re VERY mutually protective. Their defensiveness against the ageism and society’s tendency to underestimate them is one of the greatest, most harmonious parts of their relationship.

Who sings in the shower? Frankie does pretty much every single time she takes a shower. Whenever Grace is in a good enough mood to sing in the shower, it completely melts Frankie’s heart.

Who cries during movies? Grace is more likely to shed a tear than Frankie is—Frankie’s often distracted from the plot, or laser-focused on the plot in a way that makes her weirdly critical and less likely to get swept away with emotion. Grace really hates crying at movies but she often does.

Who spends the most while out shopping? Grace has more expensive tastes, but Frankie is more likely to spend more for careless reasons, like accidentally purchasing a duplicate item when shopping online.

Who kisses more roughly? Neither, most of the time. They aren’t tentative with each other, but there’s a little voice in both of their heads: Be gentle.

Who is more dominant? Grace is more dominant out of the bedroom. She’s bossy and brash and her way is the best way. But in bed, the tables turn, and Frankie’s creative tendencies and utter comfort with Grace allow her to be more uninhibited. She often takes the lead.

Ooh how about the Ava/Ruby cut convo?

everyday before you i was holding out was initially from ava's pov so this was just bare bones dialogue of her running into ruby at the restaurant that i might eventually add to my one shot collection if i ever flesh it out a bit more

“Deborah is doing Kimmel and we have a show at The Largo this weekend.”

“I heard about that.”

“I could get you in if uh, if you were interested.”

“That would be cool. Maybe we could hang out after?”

“Oh um, thanks but no,” Stilted and cringeworthy, in the way only Ava can be. “We’re actually- this, it's not like, a work thing. We’re having dinner together— we’re together.”

“Oh.” Thinking about it. “That- that actually makes a lot of sense.”

“Does it? ‘Cause I’m still trying to figure it out.” Breathy, nervous laugh. “I have never felt anything like this before.” Scrambles “No offence.”

I’m so glad you did this!! When I thought of people that I had a pent up urge to say many nice things about but wasn’t sure would actually leave me an emoji, you were at the top of the list; so I’m very pleased indeed. 😁

Just gonna jump right into a numbered list of things, as I am always wont to do 🙃

(1) S2 definitely had many ups and downs, but I have to give it credit for encouraging us to talk a lot more than we had before, which has been such a positive experience for me. You might remember from when that “how intimidating am I?” meme was going around that I gave you a pretty high score, which now feels odd in hindsight because you are so approachable and patient and generous with your time. The opposite of intimidating. And every time I had the thought of like “Oh no, I’m bothering her too much, she has other, more important things to do!” you would send me or ask me something, and it genuinely made me feel like I brought value to our exchanges for you as well. So thank you for that! I often feel like I don’t express myself in writing very well, or at least not as well as I’d like to, so for someone whose writing I admire as much as yours to find some value in what I can manage to type in a dm is reassuring.

(2) Obviously, you are an incredible writer, and in this fandom in particular I think writing fics that feel true to the characters and capture the tone well is quite  difficult. Your fics made me so happy this past year--I remember vividly reading the early chapters of your very first fic in August (or September?) at my in-laws in Vermont and thinking “God, I really hope this person keeps writing for this fandom because these fics are so good and they seem super cool”--and you did and they always were! I have zero doubt that they will continue to fill me with serotonin during this hiatus as well. I’m a bit annoyed at myself for falling behind right now because they’re always so good, but it’s worth it for me to give myself time to savor and comment! (and I’d add that there are so many because you’re not only a great writer, but one who can write great fics consistently and quickly, which is not easy at all)

(3) This is connected to 2 I guess, but we first interacted in fic comments, and while no writer is obligated to respond to fic comments, it meant and continues to mean so much to me that you did/do. I got so much out of those exchanges--they really helped me formulate my own thoughts in a way I would not have been able to without someone else (smarter) to bounce them off of - I so, so appreciate you always taking all the time that you do to respond.  

(4) Feels weird to give an entire spot to The Chart, but I love that chart so much and some day I hope you do like a fancy Powerpoint version with more characters. One of my favorite memories in this fandom for sure! And now that I know you better, I understand the nerdy, academic instincts behind it. 😉

The Evolution of Salutations and Sign off's in 6,500 miles away...but getting closer.

I’ve included the time and date for each timezone, the time lapsed since the last letter/email was sent, the salutation and sign off used, a pre-sign off where used, whether a PS was included , if Alex sent the email from her iPhone, and the word count of each letter/email. I’ve defined a pre-sign off as a single sentence (occasionally two) that acts as a sort of sign off on it’s own, for example “If you have any questions let me know!”, or “Thanks!
