This documentary from Min Sook Lee (Tiger Spirit) follows a poverty-stricken father from Central Mexico, along with several of his countrymen, as they make their annual migration to ...
i’m rewatching this ahead of my term test tonight, and, honestly, it’s just reminding me how goddamn pissed i am that i’d never heard a single thing about it in my 28 years, all of which have been here in canada. sure, only a handful of them have been in ontario, but i looked it up because there’s damn well no way we don’t have participants in the maritimes, too, given it’s a farming initiative. and, yeah, of course it extends to nova scotia, too (like, even Annapolis Valley, so you’d think it’d be more common knowledge. then again, do we really even teach that much local history/politics in school?? like, not really, tbh, and isn’t that fucked up?).
but, nope, never heard a word about it growing up, i guess because i’m cityfolk. and i’m under the impression that it’s improved somewhat since this documentary was made, but that it’s still not great, and. i don’t know, man. it just upsets me so much to find out that even canada isn’t quite the fair place you grow up thinking it is (which, like, yeah, i knew that, too, growing up near cherrybrook and preston, and then studying criminology and seeing the mess of incarceration rates for our aboriginal population, and, you know, all the residential school bs, and the africville bs), but. i don’t know, this just really hit me when we watched it in class, and it’s fucking me up again now. the working and living conditions, the way other people talk in this (i’m sorry, did one of the employers actually just refer to themself and other employers as owners??? disgusting. and if you need to add the word ‘but’ after saying a group of people are human beings, you’re a piece of shit, god, i’m in a RAGE. maybe i should go into labour law, or human rights law, or something, instead of family or criminal because, jesus, i’m heated rn).
anyway i’m rambling, but, damn, if you have an hour and you have any interest in canada, or migrant workers, or whatever, you should check this out. you can put english CC on if you need to, too.

Dream: You bought a taco?
Blue: Yes.
Dream: From the same truck that hit Ink?!
Blue, with a mouthful of taco: Well, me starving ain't gonna help them.
Although this is the first time that 24-year-old Shaquille Medley will be travelling overseas, what he will be required to do may not be entirely foreign to him as he currently helps his father to do farming on the plains of St Elizabeth, where he is from. Medley is one of 228 workers who were dispatched yesterday to take up employment opportunities under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (#SAWP) in Ontario, Canada, in areas such as Leamington, Bradford, Simcoe, Milton, Strathroy, Goderich, Tilsonburg, and St Thomas. The farmer and part-time welder is hoping that this opportunity will be life-changing. Visit the link in @jamaicagleaner Stories to read more.
