NY Eating Cheating Tour 2012: Wo Hop
I bundled up on this cold NY evening and headed downtown to Chinatown! Do I look like I gained weight? You may notice the giant zit on the bridge of my nose I acquired from all this non-paleo cheating!
That's my grandfather's winter coat from the 1930's by the way! I love wearing it, one of the few benefits of going to a cold climate. The subway system dumped me off at 17 Mott Street, home of the famous Wo Hop!
Amazingly enough there are 2 Wo Hops, unrelated and right next door to each other. One is upstairs, and the other is downstairs. This is a place that NYC Jews talk to each other about in code (Shh, you got to go to the one downstairs, that's where they keep the good stuff, pass it on). This is a longtime favorite of many people in NY for it's classic Cantonese menu for Americans, and classic Chinese menu for Asians. You'll see tables of both American and Chinese people with completely different foods being served, but it's all delicious.
Downstairs I went indeed, where I met one of my longtime readers Cindy of SayHelloToCindy right here on tumblr. We've struck up a friendship over the years, and when I wrote about Wo Hop back in 2010, she wanted to go with me the next time I was in NY. And that day finally arrived!
Cindy brought her charming husband Robert along, who with the help of paleo, lost an amazing 80+ pounds! This was his cheat night, and we went to town. The one thing I wanted more than anything, and dreamed about leading up to this dinner was the soup. Yang Chow War Wonton, and I asked for it in Egg Drop broth. Delicious wontons, roast pork, duck, chicken, shrimp, bok choy, mushrooms, and water chestnuts. This is one of my death bed meals for sure, and I added my usual hot mustard, and crunchy noodles to the mix.
We had some other dishes too, but to me, the soup was the star of the show. It was a wonderful evening, full of laughs, good food, corn starch, and MSG. And Robert picked up the tab! If any other readers want to take me out to eat, I've got a whole list of other cheat meals ready to go!
Thanks Cindy & Robert for a great time! Ugga-Bugga!

LIAM NEESON WAS IN EXCALIBUR. BOOM. DONE. :)

You’ve seen him as Sir Gawain right?
The only time I saw (part of) Excalibur was quite accidental at the tender age of 10 or 11. My memory of the memory is probably worse than the reality, but I just remember being so traumatized by the violence that it never occurred to me to watch it again. I had this problem with The Godfather as well, which I did end up re-watching in my 20s and understood it much better.
So perhaps it's time to go back and rewatch Excalibur? Except that it's not on Netflix streaming! Oh, the humanity.

Any peculiar pre-race rituals? Also what time are you aiming for in the marathon? Not really TMI, but I’m keeping this PG!
Pre-race? Sleep, usually (or a couple beers the night before). I don't have anything in particular that I like to do before a race, other than complain about how fucking early it is. Oh, and I always eat two bananas that morning.
