Whatever it was (it was real)
Rating T, Zoé/Alya
“Favorite superhero, huh? I mean, Ladybug is just perfect, Chat Noire is awesome, it’s difficult to decide”, said Zoé carefully. Too carefully, apparently, because Alya noticed straight away with her interviewer skills.
“Come on, no need to be shy. The temporary heroes are cool, too! There is no wrong answer here. Even Queen Bee had her moments.”
“Yeah, well…” Zoé thought for a moment. Not about Chloé, but a different hero, one who hadn’t left her mind in weeks. Oh what the hell. Alya was probably cool.
“Actually, this is is going to sound stupid”, she continued. “But I really liked Scarabella. She was so cool! I know she was only there for a bit and in the end Ladybug took over again, but Scarabella was elegant and funny and awesome…”
Zoé sighed dreamily. Scarabella’s smile and deep brown eyes had been seared deep into her memory.
“Oh”, said Alya. “That’s… not something I hear a lot.”
“Yeah, I know, it’s not-“
“-no, no, it’s a good answer. I just didn’t expect it.”
Alya leaned in close and whispered conspiratorially.
“I know the blog is called the Ladyblog, and I love Ladybug and Chat Noire with all my heart… but I think my favorite might be Kitty Noire, actually.”
“Really?” Zoé perked up. This was highly unusual. “Thank you- I mean, that’s so cool! Those two were a great team!”
“Yeah, they were!”, Alya shouted happily. “They had so much fun together.”
“Absolutely! The way Scarabella carried Kitty…“
Zoé couldn’t believe it. Her few minutes as Kitty Noire were the high point of her existence so far, but she always assumed everyone had forgotten about this short fight. But it turned out Alya knew every moment of the event, including some that Zoé herself hadn’t even seen. Those cameras clearly must have been amazing.
Being Kitty Noire and fighting alongside Scarabella had been exhilarating. The freedom to act on her own, without any Ladybug plan to fall back on, had been scary and exciting. Scarabella had more of a plan of what to do, but she had been enjoying the fight as well. Trying out poses, moves, cat puns, it had been a blast. If only there had been a repeat.
“-and the way they were joking around”, said Alya. “God, those two were a great pair.”
“Yeah, the way Scarabella looked at Kitty, oof. I mean, jokingly, of course”, said Zoé, just to tip her toe in the water. It was what she had always said to herself: Scarabella hadn’t meant it, and now would never mean it, and she just had to live with that. But there was a part of her heart that still had hope. And with Alya memorising that fight in so much detail, well, maybe she had spotted something that Zoé hadn’t. It was worth the risk.
“Yeah, jokes…”, said Alya thoughtfully. “Or was it? The black cat and the ladybug have to flirt, after all, it’s part of the fun, right? But the way Kitty was talking… were they really just joking?”

“The new ladybug and cat had one job and it was to not fall in love—” ACTUALLY their one job was to Not have a mental breakdown about secret identities.
Marinette and Adrien were so in love and it was never a problem. They were always allowed to be in love, they just have to be cool with Not Knowing who they are as civilians. That was the thing that was crushing them and the reason they needed to take a break and get some perspective and remember how to be Kids for a minute.
If a new ladybug and cat wielder flirted incessantly and also thought that keeping their identities secret was fun and sexy then they would be absolutely fulfilling their job requirement perfectly. And in that case they could and should be allowed to kiss on the lips. In this essay I will—
Its far too dangerous to go alone in this path, take this with you!
