Noppera-bō 101: The Ghost Who Forgot Its Face (Literally)
Meet the Noppera-bō, Japan’s eeriest minimalist. At first glance, they look totally normal—just a quiet traveler, a lonely villager, maybe even your coworker Makoto (you know the one). But then they turn to face you… and bam! No eyes. No nose. No mouth. Just a smooth, blank canvas of existential dread.
They don’t attack, chase, or whisper cryptic haikus. They just exist, facelessly, ruining your evening and any hope of restful sleep. Classic ghost etiquette.
They’re not even evil, technically—they’re more about that slow, creeping horror. The kind that sinks in after you've screamed, bolted, and questioned your life choices.
Moral of the story? If someone you’re talking to suddenly forgets how faces work, it’s time to leave. Quickly. And maybe rethink that solo walk near the river.
My nerdy brain is telling me that out of the entire V.I.L.E. Academy...Gunnar Maelstrom has to be the creepiest and most psychotic (ok, actually, he's the only real psycho...everyone else is fine...sorta) villain in the entire show of Carmen Sandiego. Maybe it's just me not watching tv as much as I used to growing up...but, I feel like there just aren't as many characters, out there, like him...and I happen to like characters like him.... Not in that way! Don't be weird!
Yeah, I'm totally crazy ^^;.
Maelstrom: Yes, you are.
Me: >.> Seriously, how tf did you get into my house?
Captain Silas doodles.
Ok so I have this villian and I want to make her absolutely terrifying with 0 chance of redemption but I don't have access to horror books/anything really scary (bc my parents are religous and believe that watching/reading stuff like that will invite demons into your house/life and I'm not gonna watch any horror movie at night before I go to bed thank you very much) any advice on how to make her truly terrifying
My suggestion is to draw inspiration from your own experiences or your own fear. Which people in life scare you the most? Is it a person you know from school? A person on TV? A person from a book/show/movie?
What is it about them that makes them scary?
On top of thinking about your own experiences, have a list of traits that I personally think make a person scary:
- Stiff posture
- Cold/emotionless eyes
- Crooked/lopsided smile
- Smiles that don’t reach the eyes
- Speak softly but menacingly, like a growl
- Sick sense of humor/laughing at inappropriate times or making a joke out of things that aren’t funny
- Disturbing offhanded comments
- Clothing with chilling images/words on them
- Walk without making noise. Easily able to sneak up on you
- Has very disturbing views on topics and doesn’t even listen to opposing sides, hard-set on their ways with a determination that’s absolutely terrifying
- Quick to judge people and insult them out loud
- Terrible person with a large following. The only thing worse than a scary person is a powerful scary person with a ton of people who like and support them.
- Staring
- For your character, perhaps she could kill people and animals in gruesome ways, or perhaps even kill main characters if you’re up for it. It’s the best way to show she’s a force to be reckoned with.
"Why aren't you scared of me!?" He towered over her in a threatening way with anger in his eyes. "You're not very scary..." She shrugged and walked around him. "I went through my college finals while my mother was sick in the hospital. If you think you can be any more scary than that whole week I went through I dare you to try." Or something like that. Just something I though of. A little blurb. It's just pretty tiring hearing some characters think they should be all bad and scary??
Ok so I have a (somewhat) reformed assassin for a character (as in she was still doing her murder thing in the beginning of the book) and I want make her really good at what she does and make her one of those characters that everyone's like 'do NOT get one their bad side' any advice on how to accomplish this???
I already have a post that’s kind of like this, and it’s about how to make your characters scarier and more intimidating [x]
If it doesn’t help, since your character is a little bit different than the character of the asker in the other question, don’t hesitate to come back! I’ll be happy to supply you with more tips!
Bard Bits: Here Be Monsters
When Shakespeare’s works are mentioned the association with him runs towards love stories, as in Romeo and Juliet or tragedies like Hamlet or even sweeping historicals found in the Henry plays. Not necessarily Shakespearean Monsters may not be the forerunner feature in his stories but Shakespeare did populate his plots with creatures, witches, and ghosts—oh my, he certainly did. In fact, most…
