Mandana LOVES scent games

It’s part of what makes her so good at medical alerts. There are plenty of dog sports (scent work, search & rescue, barn hunt) she would really enjoy but I don’t have the resources or energy to do them. Instead, we play a lot of Hide & Seek.

I’ve run out of places to hide treats at home, so I have to get creative. Hiding treats inside cardboard containers and then hiding those containers has been a big hit. I think I’ll try plastic containers next time for a harder challenge. I also hide toys and have her trade them in so she can’t just hunt for yummy smells. Pretty soon I’ll switch to random objects she’s unfamiliar with and we’ll also try doing some searches outside in various locations.

There’s a lot of service dog training we still need to do, but trying to cram it all in to a set timeline can be stressful. Dog lives are short. I don’t want to miss out on all the fun times we could be having just because we were chasing training milestones.

Does anyone have any recommendations for scent work training? I’m going through youtube looking for videos and the ones I keep stumbling on have some red flags - like their dog in the video wearing a prong collar. I want to train at least one of the elkhounds for bedbug detection, but I need a good starting point. I’m pretty well versed in +R training generally, but I’ve never done anything besides obedience training.

so first note on differences between scent training a cat and scent training a dog:

dogs will eventually learn “k, no reaction from treat hand?  Might as well sniff the other hand and see what happ-- Oh!!  Treat happened!!!”

Cats do not.  At least, Yardstick hasn’t sorted it out.  As soon as he smells treats, he gets laser eyes and Won’t Stop Bothering The Treat Hand.  Part of this could be because he knows ‘tap treat hand = high five = treat’.  So I’m taking a step back from the excellent guide and just letting him interact with a scented object (in this case, I used vanilla because it’s something I have an abundance of and it’s Distinct).  I’ll add the treats later once it’s firmly in his skull that Scent = Treat, just as much as Treat = Treat.

Went to instacare last week to get some meds because the pressure in my ear from this cold was SO BAD. Felt like my eardrum was going to explode. Moqui did a really good job being patient! It took about 3 hours total to get in and out.

Then when picking up my prescription from the grocery store pharmacy I got a vertigo attack, I grabbed the nearest wall and just sat down. The manager lady was such a sweety she was like "are you ok?! Do you need sugar?! Are you diabetic?! Let me get you a water bottle! You sit there as long as you need." So sweet. So I sat on the ground for a while and it got a little less spinny but still not enough to drive so my dad called me an Uber and he and my mom came and got the car later. 😊 Did get a scent sample for Moqui out of it! And I feel like I'm getting better at predicting maybe down to a week when I'm going to get a vertigo attack, like when I have extra pressure from a stinky cold! All in all a good day.
