Since my exams and projects are all done, I figured I’d finally post one of the designs I made for the Apparitions (ghouls) in my Recollections Warriors AU!

Those that were involved in the battle of Bloodclan and died on the battlefield have become Apparitions. These are highly dangerous creatures with no trace of the cat that they were before. Each Apparition is different, so it is of utmost importance to record each so that the cats of Twolegplace know how to deal with them if they are encountered. Hattie’s ability to sense ghosts and Apparitions before they get too close has been a boon for research purposes, to which Olive and Princess use to organize their supply runs.

This specific Apparition, The Dragon, is usually encountered during sunrise and sunset, so cats should only be out around that time when organized groups. At least one cat per group should be a stray, as said Apparition is a mimic. It has been recorded to mimic the sound of doors closing and twoleg chatter, sounds that most housecats would tune out, before it strikes. Strays are much more wary of these noises, so their input during encounters is essential. The Dragon is fast, and moves in slinky accordion-like lunges that catch most victims off their guard. Otherwise, the Apparition can easily be bowled over due to appearing to be made mostly of cloth (key word “mostly,” beware its claws and spikes). If you’re lucky, you will hear the sound of the crinkle of its shiny foil ruff, giving away its location before it gets to you.

As most Apparitions are based upon the fears that they possessed back when they were cats, it is theorized that this specific Apparition is sourced from a housecat from a household with younger children. A close friend of the deceased cat mentioned that he used to be terrified of one of the puppets that would show up on one of the old VCR tapes that his housefolk would put on for the entertainment their children.

So this thing is the Zylon dragon puppet from some really old VHS tapes that my parents would put on for me as a little kid. It was supposed to have soothing music in the background and satisfying visuals and tinker toys to watch, but they decided to include this terrifying puppet instead for one of the segments. It scared me so bad because the puppet was in this black void and when it tried to shut its mouth (which it couldn’t fully) this really loud sfx of a door closing would play. It’s kinda goofy looking now, but I wanted to put some of that childhood fear into one of my Apparitions.

A Nightly Visit from Malleus ~

I managed to finish drawing Malleus near the beginning of the month. But the background, oof. I just wanted a cute background referencing his nightly visits at ramshackle, to be held back by all the details. At least I’m finally done.
