Emilia’s labour began during a heavy winter storm. It was impossible to call for assistance - she delivered our son herself, with only my clumsy help. When she saw her boy, she asked that his name be ‘Beau’. She said little else after that. Though I did my damnedest to revive her, she could not be woken.
The time has come for a pivotal decision … which of the Scott children will carry on the legacy?
Will it be Olive, the abrasive young woman with her heart set on a life of luxury?
Will it be Beau, the kind young gentleman who plans to be a painter like his father?
Or will it be Margaret, the music-loving youngster who can't wait to grow up?

My cousins, Floyd and Albert, came to visit me in the city. Uncle Elmer is away at war still, and they expressed how useless they feel, unable to join the war effort and help defend our country alongside their father. Albert cannot enlist as he was born with only one full leg (though he now wears a false leg), and Floyd would not be accepted because of the colour of his skin. I doubt it was their intention, but our conversation has spurred me to action. The children will be left in Esther’s highly capable care until I return.
