Doing something while regretting it
"But what if I make a mistake?" Gilan threw back his head and laughed. "A mistake? One mistake? You should be so lucky. You'll make dozens! I made four or five on my first day alone! Of course you'll make mistakes. Just don't make any of them twice. If you do mess things up, don't try to hide it. Don't try to rationalize it. Recognize it and admit it and learn from it. We never stop learning, none of us does."
-Erak's Ransom by John Flanagan
Who else has a Gilan in his mind who's screwing up the most ridiculous things?
I watched Onward and I found myself relating to Barley. I am the oldest sister, and probably the most dramatic. I feel like I screw up so many times, and I let down my younger sisters a lot. Barley gives me confidence that things will get better eventually.
oh my gooooood you guys i’ve been binging community all day. i started season 2 yesterday and i made it to SEASON 3 TODAY.
We've had a short series of YouTube videos over the last few weeks talking about screwing up and recovering.
Here's today's.
Taking Breaks
Hey you, sat reading this! Get off that chair/get out of bed/get up! Shake your hands in the air, roll your head from left to right, jump up and down a couple of times and walk around your immediate area for a minute or two. Stretch out your face, open that mouth super wide like a lion's roar and then make it really small like a cat's bum. Do it again. Squint your eyes tight shut, open them wide! Raise those eyebrows, glare ferociously, wrinkle your nose, shake your body! Have you drunk enough water today? Have you eaten recently? Filled your hug quota? Stretched? Go sort these things out. OK you can sit back down.
My advice for you today is: remember to take breaks. Your body needs them, your mind needs them, everything about you needs a quick break every now and then. If you're working physically, take a rest. If you're sat down, stand up and move about. If you're doing lots of tough mental work, take a quick 'trivial things' moment.
I am terrible at taking breaks. The past week I have worked hard, doing strenuous physical labour, from around 10:00 to around 17:00-19:00 and have forgotten to eat during that time, every single day. I also went out last night with Petra, M and Dash and partied til 01:00.
As a result, I have crashed today. Really hard. I screwed up my measurements earlier and have wasted an entire £80 of materials, due to simply being too mentally and physically exhausted to think clearly. The moment I realised what I'd done, I fell into a very deep, exhausted depressive state and have been only half awake since then. Thankfully my brain is too tired to call me too many names today, it's just disgruntled and sending general 'I blame yooouuu' vibes.
Don't forget to take breaks, y'all. From today I'm going to start setting two-hour timers on my phone and taking fifteen minutes of downtime on each one. Hopefully I will be healthier, and my work will be better.
Copy and Paste Trouble
The new copy and paste feature is just really awesome! I use it all the time now, I can hardly even remember when we didn't use to have it. Even in the early game, it's useful for planning, as placeholders and for laying out your base. You could do all that with blueprints of course, but it's just even more accessible and convenient now.
Being able to scroll through the last couple of things in your "clipboard" is also really great. Maybe it's just me, but I often think "oh, you need that thing again, the one you just used" and previously I would have already cleared my temporary blueprint and lost it. Thanks to the new feature, this is no longer a problem!
I also checked and in case you were wondering, the clipboard can hold up to the last twenty things you copied or cut. Also, the clipboard is saved per player (not globally, i.e. shared between saves) and is not temporary in the "is deleted on a restart" sense of the word. Here is the screenshot I took when checking the number of “slots” in the clipboard, in case you'd like to see the last twenty random things I used it for!
Normal blueprints can be edited when you create them, holding [shift] when you release the mouse will skip the blueprint-editing menu and make it right away. Since the copy function also gives you the "blueprint" right away, this feature is reversed: holding shift will let you edit the content of the entities you're trying to copy.
One thing you have to watch out for is the darn hotkey though! It's really easy to not hit the [shift] key properly and you end up with just [C]. Which, in case you forgot, is the hotkey for shooting at stuff, so you end up with a lot of situations like these ...
... or sometimes even these!
Luckily, you can customize basically all the controls in Factorio (which I really appreciate in a game!) and I decided to just turn that hotkey off. Shooting at nearby enemies is still [space], the [C] key is just for shooting at some specific target, whether it's an enemy or not. So it's rarely ever used anyway, unless you're shooting at a chest filled with junk to destroy it, because that's the only way to delete unwanted items.
So the new Copy Paste feature is awesome, just be careful with your hotkeys, especially when carrying a rocket launcher filled with nukes!
