H.N. Banerjee - Americans Who Have Been Reincarnated - Scribner - 1980
On April 5th, 1974, Stephen King, a high school teacher in the state of Maine who spent his nights and weekends writing, published Carrie, his first full-length novel. It became a bestseller and was made into a movie. The first of many of his bestsellers to be made into movies. We are celebrating 50 years of Stephen King with a display featuring his latest works and some classics, including his book ON WRITING (a staff favorite and a high school summer reading title.)
What oh what did I just read?

Thank you to @netgalley and @scribnerbooks for the gifted copy of Follow Me To Ground by Sue Rainsford. I am honestly still processing this book, which was beautiful and gross all at the same time.
.
Synopsis from the publisher: Ada and her father, touched by the power to heal illness, live on the edge of a village where they help sick locals—or “Cures”—by cracking open their damaged bodies or temporarily burying them in the reviving, dangerous Ground nearby. Ada, a being both more and less than human, is mostly uninterested in the Cures, until she meets a man named Samson. When they strike up an affair, to the displeasure of her father and Samson’s widowed, pregnant sister, Ada is torn between her old way of life and new possibilities with her lover—and eventually comes to a decision that will forever change Samson, the town, and the Ground itself.

This dark and lyrically written tale has all the makings of a Fairytale by the brothers Grimm. Disturbing and beautiful imagery coupled with a bit of cautionary tale. This is the kind of subtle horror that creeps up on you slowly. Also trigger warning for hints of pedophilia but also not... hard to explain, but if mentions of this type of situation are triggering for you then maybe skip this one. If you love slower, creepy, mind bending horror then this is definitely one to check out. Don’t expect it to be like anything you have read before.

Anyone else read this one? What were your thoughts?

Continuing with the theme from yesterday, who has read The Great Gatsby?
.
Thank you so much to @scribnerbooks and @netgalley for the ARC of the graphic novel adaptation of The Great Gatsby. If you are a fan of the original book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, then you definitely need to check out this book! The artwork by @ayamorton.art is absolutely gorgeous and really brings the story to life. As with all graphic novel adaptations, the text is limited, so much of the beautiful writing which made this book a classic is missing. Still the story is easy to follow through the panels of this book, and the main themes and elements can still be found in reading this graphic novel. This would be a wonderful way to introduce this book or as a follow up for high school classes reading the story. While I wouldn’t read this instead of the novel, I love it as a companion read to a beloved classic!

Did you know that just within the last year a school board in Alaska banned this book for sexual elements and controversial content? Of course this had the opposite effect, because when you tell people they can’t read something they automatically want to more. Sales for the book spiked in that location.
