"If I were to rate a story with points, what would that look like? Based upon my own biased opinion, a likeable main character might get 20 points; a little bit of magic would get 20 more; a roadtrip scene earns 10 points, but a hospital scene earns negative 10; and surely, one good smackeroo in there between the two lovebirds has got to earn at least 5.
Of course, all of those numbers are entirely arbitrary. Ask any writer, and she’ll probably tell you that a story amounts to more than the sum of its parts. It’s not about points or keeping score.
And yet, the ability to quantify a story is still intriguing: can we actually measure a story’s worth by the numbers? It’s a question that’s increasingly appealing to Hollywood studios who have millions of dollars on the line if their latest blockbuster’s story just doesn’t work. But despite all the sequels and threequels, we like to think that they must know that they need NEW stories to keep our interest..."
