rant incoming: tl;dr i hate the term "spicy".
so, i understand why porn and erotica is referred to as "spicy content/books/etc". i think when it started it was a way to circumvent moderations on platforms like youtube and tiktok. same with "grape" and "unalive" and "self exit".
but I am the author of spicy fanfic and primary consumer of spicy games/books/you name it and I must say that I detest the way it makes porn digestible.
now, let me be clear. there is nothing wrong with consuming porn. loving porn. reading porn. playing porn. watching porn.
again, i am the horniest person known to man.
however, when we label it "spicy" and dangle content in front of noses with the promise of "spice" with a giggle and a wink and a red pepper 🌶️ emoji it takes away the seriousness of what it is and carves out what were previously kink friendly places for individuals who are judgmental and vanilla, vulnerable, or otherwise ignorant, and blurs lines about what porn and erotica actually is.
for example, my own mother has always been a born again christian and staunchly anti-porn. however, booktok convinced her to try out hehe haha spicy content and now she does shit like read haunting adeline openly at family gatherings.
now again, let your freak flag fly girl but I do think if it had been presented to her as "hey. this is porn. with some heavy scenes involving gun play and cnc" she 1) wouldn't have consumed it and 2) definitely wouldn't in the presence of others.
and i think if someone had a real conversation with her about what her "spicy books" actually were she would be incredibly upset. (not because its wrong- but because she believes said content to be wrong. big difference. my point stands: she deserved to make that choice with blunt and honest labeling, and that was stolen from her.)
additionally, because the media she's been consuming is porn with heavy BDSM themes but no proper BDSM introduction i do believe it is affecting her dating life. my mother is a chronic domestic abuse survivor and quite frankly is addicted to it. consuming things like CNC, power play, Impact Play, weapon play, etc without proper understanding of what you're consuming and why when you're in such a position is detrimental, to say the least.
once again the problem is not the content
sex and BDSM requires clear lines and firm boundaries. "spicy" smears them to vulnerable populations.
and perhaps the most important demographic in all of this is, as it almost always is, children.
i do not write "spicy content". i write porn. for any parents that may be scrolling through your child's social media right now: i write porn. if you see anything labeled "spicy" or "🌶️ " it is porn. block my account. block those accounts. it is imperative that this content is treated with the same concern pornographic videos would cause.
