Redbird in Bloomington

After the previous post, I wanted to track down an example of a GM&O SD40, which sported the nickname of "Redbird."

This one was found in Bloomington, Illinois, the town where a few of us would visit every so often in a hunt for GM&O F-units. This particular unit was built for the road in 1966.

That sound!    Hmmmmm

Every once in a while, I see something neat and also go, “I know what that is!” -- and I don’t merely mean about the massive EMD645E3 2-stroke diesel engine!

I mean, I see Southern Pacific heritage!

I see snowsheds and summit tunnels, the Sierra, Cascades, and the Tehachapi Loop -- I. see. a. living. breathing.  tunnel motor.

For kicks and giggles, here’s my suppositional identification, which might be wrong, but there’s not a lot of surviving SD40T-2s left, sadly -- I am counting on someone to correct me if I get it wrong lol @eltristan​  @identifying-trains-in-posts-too​ @identifying-trains-in-posts​ @identifying-trains-inposts​

Southern Pacific 8515, grimey and glorious -- Speed Lettering and at some point sold to the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis, TRRA 3001  and still going as ILSX 1310 on the leasing company, Independent Locomotive Service

Perúvian Mountain Central Railway:

El Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCCA) locomotora #1024 rests the radiators — running dynamic brakes down to sea-level from the rare air of the Ándes mountains. The summit has no snowsheds, and only a ¾-mile tunnel, but at 15,807 ft — and, yes, 15,807 feet is 3-freaking-miles!!! — this is real railroading that demands every bit as much of a work ethic as the hard pull through Walong. Ever the hard-working lady, FCCA #1024, nee-SP tunnelmotor #8382, shows what a classically configured SD40T-2 looks like to be still pulling strong after all these years.

L&N SD40 1242 by Chuck Zeiler Via Flickr: Louisville & Nashville Railroad SD40 1242 near Greensboro, Georgia on February 25, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1242 was meeting Georgia RR Train # 108 , the train I was on, and the last mixed train on a Class One in the US. I was in the cupola of the caboose of Georgia Railroad Train Number 108. I purchased a ticket to ride in the Budd coach seen on the right. The rear end crew, upon noticing my interest in railroading, invited me back to the caboose, which I graciously accepted. There is a reverse image artifact on the right side of the frame, a reflection on a window in the cupola.

Just North of Lincoln

Continuing a series of images focusing on one train, powered by F-units, on the former Chicago & Alton, later GM&O/ICG.

At this stage, the train is taking to a siding for a northbound job. Interestingly enough, the power for this train are three Red Bird SD40s, consecutively numbered no less: 913, 914, and 915 (the last renumbered to ICG 6064). This is an example of GM&O power staying close to home after the merger.

Kruger Elevator can be seen in the background of the first image while the siding is known as Athol. The first image shows the color position light pretty well—note a dwarf version on the ground, which governs the siding.
