If the other guy didn't ask I'd love to know about the specific a/b/o biology in your universe! It'd help me a lot to know how to accurately write it and I'm also just interested in the wider world building outside of the main story. If you have any details on how traditional omegaverse tropes work (heats, ruts, abilities, figuring out your secondary gender, etc) please feel free to ramble about em
Yeah no problem! Just a heads up that this is gonna be basically like omegaverse FLE, so there's gonna be some sexual stuff mentioned here. Warnings include: sex mentions, heat and rut mentions, sex organs, mentions of pregnancy, and gendered language.
Also as I mentioned in the other post, it's important to note that no two omegaverses are the same. I can only speak to my own version of the omegaverse, so just keep that in mind when reading other author's omegaverse stories!
Humans within the omegaverse, despite some of the terminology used, are more like fantasy creatures than wolves or other known animals. They're mostly like normal humans with the exception of their physical biology (more on that later), instincts, and certain other aspects. For example, they have heightened senses, more prominent scents, claws, and fangs. Besides that, they're pretty much humans. Their instincts and sex characteristics are where they divulge more.
First, let me establish second genders real quick. In my omegaverse, there are three second genders: Alpha, omega, and beta.
Alphas are typically seen as the more dominant second gender. They’re more aggressive, more protective (well, somewhat), more likely to become leaders, and more likely to take over providing for others. Protecting and providing are their main instincts specially, although this varies personally to person.
Omegas are typically seen as more docile in comparison to alphas. They’re often more gentle, more comforting and calming, and more nurturing. They’re mostly regarded as the more submissive second gender.
Betas are much more fluid in their instincts compared to the other two genders. While they’re technically neutral at their base level, betas can take up any particular instinct depending on their personal needs. Some betas present a little more like alphas, and some present more like omegas. Some are truly neutral and take an equal amount of inspiration from both alphas and omegas. It’s something that’s different for every beta, although their instincts are never as strong as alphas or omegas. Their senses and own personal scents are a lot weaker than alphas and omegas too, at least naturally.
So as you can probably guess, the omegaverse is pretty gendered. However, it’s important to note that not every alpha or omega will present in their stereotypical way. They have certain instincts, but personalities and the way they act are entirely up to each individual person.
People don’t begin presenting their second gender until around puberty. Alongside the normal changes with their body, those who become alphas or omegas will begin to experience both physical changes (depending on biological sex) and/or instinct shifts aligning with their second gender. Those who present as betas will not notice much of a shift besides a weakening sense of smell and a weakening scent.
Now let’s move on to the physical differences (this is where the sex characteristics come in).
To make this easier on myself, I’m gonna be referring to each person as if they were cis. Trans people definitely do exist (Leo’s right there lol), but for that sake of explanation it would make my job easier to just use male and female.
Here we go.
Male alphas have the same biological body as cis men in our universe do. They have a penis and testicles, and they are unable to get pregnant. They also have a knot.
Female alphas have a uterus and vagina, so they have the capability to get pregnant, but they also have a penis and testicles, which are much more useful for them. They also have a knot. An alpha’s main instinct when having sex is to impregnate their mate, so their penis is much more functional than their uterus. It is harder for female alphas to get pregnant than it would be for an omega, but it is possible. They also have breasts, like cis females do.
(Note: alphas tend to have bigger penis’s for pleasure reasons than betas and omegas with them.)
Male omegas, like female alphas, have vaginas, uterus’s, testicles, and penis’s. However, their penis and testicles are smaller than that of an alpha’s. They are built more for getting pregnant, rather than impregnating, so their uterus’s are in much higher function than anything else down there. For that reason, they do not have a knot. It is possible for them to father a kid, but it’s harder to do. They don’t have breasts unless they are pregnant, in which case their chest will grow out as the fetus grows. It will begin to flatten once the pup has been weaned off of milk.
Female omegas have the same biological body as cis women in our world do. They simply have a vagina and uterus, as well as breasts.
Male betas have the same anatomy as cis men, and female betas have the same anatomy as cis women. There’s nothing special going on with them.
And that’s really it for the physical differences, at least as far as I can remember. Onto the last part of the question: Heats and ruts
Heat and ruts are basically just a period of time in which a person becomes overwhelmed with the desire to procreate, and as a result, cannot think about anything besides sex. Mated people will spend the majority of their heat/rut with their mate(s) in order to satiate their desire, as well as gleen comfort from their most trusted person at their most vulnerable. If a person is satisfied enough, they’ll be granted a short break from intercourse to eat, use the bathroom, and drink, but otherwise they are in their nest, going at it with their mates (or themselves). They are able to sleep thankfully, so once night hits they get a couple hours of relief in the form of sleeping. Heard and ruts typically last a week at most, and usually occur once a year.
Alpha’s have a rut, and omegas have a heat. Betas do not get either a heat or a rut naturally, but modern medicine can be used to put a beta into one if taken. It’s usually used by betas who have an alpha or omega as a mate as a tool to help them through their cycle.
An alpha’s rut can trigger an omega’s heat and vise versa, especially if they are a mated pair. An alpha in rut can also trigger another alpha’s rut, and an omega’s heat can trigger another omega’s heat. The likelihood of this happening depends on proximity, length of proximity, and if the two people are mated to each other.
If a mated alpha or omega are experiencing their cycle and don’t have their mate present, they can experience heat/rut sickness. This occurs due to the lack of contact with their mate, whom they’re bound to by their mating mark. Because people are tied to their mate(s) with those physical marks, the absence of their mate(s) during their most vulnerable, weakened state can become traumatic for the body. They grow very ill very quickly, abruptly going from their heat/rut to full sickness. The sickness drains them of their energy, leaving them with a raging fever and uncontrollable shivers. If it gets bad enough, the victim will fall into a mini coma of sorts. If not treated, it often leads to death. The most effective cure is the presence of their mate(s), as well as a stable environment to rest in.
And that’s really it for those parts of the omegaverse! Let me know if you have any other questions or topics you’d want to hear about from here!
