“Is the Skies of Arcadia fandom dying?” A reflection.
sigh I can’t believe I have to say this, but I have some disappointing news: the Skies of Arcadia fandom feels like it’s slowly fading away.
You might be wondering—what is Skies of Arcadia, and why do I feel this way? Let me explain.
Skies of Arcadia is a JRPG created by SEGA, originally released for the Dreamcast and later ported to the Nintendo GameCube as a “director’s cut.” It’s one of those rare gems that captured everything I love about adventure, exploration, and sky-pirate wonder.
I actually rediscovered Vyse back in early August this year while replaying Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on my Nintendo 3DS. I didn’t remember much about him from when I was younger—but I did remember how much I adored him. That spark made me start shipping myself (Masha) with Vyse. I guess you could call that a yumeship, right?
A day later, I went to Otakon, a huge anime convention, and I couldn’t help but imagine what it’d be like if characters from different SEGA franchises existed in the real world. Then I saw someone cosplaying as Vyse from Skies of Arcadia—one of my favorite SEGA characters ever—and it absolutely made my day.
That moment reignited my passion. I even started commissioning SEGA or anime fan artists to draw me (Masha) and Vyse together, and I posted lore documents about the Mashaverse (now Vexia) version of Vyse—where he’s my rival turned love interest.
But as I kept digging, the truth hit me hard: SEGA never planned to continue Skies of Arcadia. They poured everything into that one game for both the Dreamcast and GameCube, and while fans hoped for a sequel or remaster, it seems those dreams have drifted away into the clouds.
Now, it really feels like the fandom has gone quiet. There’s less and less Skies of Arcadia content in the SEGA community, especially since September, and it breaks my heart. This game brought me so many memories—it’s a huge part of why I love SEGA in the first place. It hurts to see something so special fade into obscurity.
I get it—it’s normal for people to move on from fandoms. I’m still active in others like Sonic, Puyo Puyo, and Jet Set Radio. But Skies of Arcadia is different. It’s such an obscure treasure that it feels like it needs to be protected at all costs. Even most of my online friends aren’t in the fandom anymore. There’s now this cold, empty space in my heart where that shared excitement used to be.
Still… all hope isn’t lost. 🌤️
I’m planning to help revive the Skies of Arcadia fandom later this month! I’ll be creating and sharing new Skies of Arcadia content—fan art, posts, and maybe even analysis—especially on Tumblr, since there’s barely any activity there right now. I can’t promise I’ll post every day (anxiety and mood sometimes make that tough), but I’ll do my best to keep the skies alive.
Even if the fandom feels “kinda dead,” I’m not giving up on it.
Because Skies of Arcadia deserves to live on—for SEGA fans, for the dreamers, and for everyone who still believes that blue skies are eternal. ☁️💙
