The jackets themselves are available in all colors of the rainbow, and custom colors too, to suit the unique school colors of any team. Usually the boiled wool jackets have attached leather sleeves and banded waistband and wrists. The jackets are traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United Arab Emirates. They represent both school and team pride and serve as a place to display personal awards, pins, badges, chenille patches, and other accolades earned in athletics, academics, or other activities. Letter jackets are also sometimes known as "baseball jackets" or "varsity jackets" in reference to their athletic origins.
The criterion for ownership varies from school to school. It usually entails a certain amount of participation in a sport or activity throughout the school year to be eligible. Some schools still only reward students and award letters based strictly on athletic performance (ie. a certain number of scores, runs, hits, steals, baskets, or tackles, according to position and sport) in the most pivotal games of the year. In other schools, maintaining one-half to two-thirds participation in sporting events or other activities is considered enough to qualify for the Senior Jacket and letters.
Still other schools award letters on a more subjective basis - sometimes taking input from a counsel of coaches, assistant coaches, team leaders, and other senior players – awarding letters only for significant improvement, substantial performance, or amazing sportsmanship out on the field. Originally the jacket, and accompanying chenille letter patches, were awarded only for certain sports, but gradually with time, not wanting to be left out of the visual recognition, more and more activities and clubs petitioned to be included. At many schools, qualification for the jackets was opened up to other sports and activities and now includes athletes and academic performers in a variety of disciplines.
