Sharing some play ideas as a #musictherapistmom. When I was an intern in an adult disability facility in Brisbane, I came to know about the #multisensoryroom and it was WOW! It costs a bomb 💣 and I always wonder if I can create a similar set up in my music sessions. And Yes- actually I do! Music is sensorial and that’s when I like to pair up soft music while dimming the lights or pairing it up with laser at the end of a session. If you’re a teacher/ parents who have been to classes and seen soft music pairing up with lights, now you understand it’s function. It’s a calming strategy towards the end of a very energetic music class! Some backgrounds: I have chosen a profession that embrace #neurodiversity and the more I learn the more I believe that EVERYONE including you and me could have different types of #sensoryneeds. You may be a #sensoryseeker or a #sensoryavoider. That understanding has led me to believe that there is No Bad Kids, but just kids whose sensory needs are not met. Only if our sensory needs are satisfied, then we reach an equilibrium, that’s when learning takes place. So I have decided to set up a light table at home and see what effects it has on the children. It was fun to observe the different ways of explorations my 1, 4 and 7 years old have. We used that towards the end of the day to wind down the day. To add more magic to it, I selected a playlist that I like to listen to 😁 cos it’s not always about the kids, but it’s good #selfcare for the parents too!
