Fandom Problem #13,260:
We owe an apology to all those direct to VHS Disney sequels
At least the people working on those actually LIKED the thing they were making a follow up to instead of constantly bashing it.

sequel problems pt. 1
remembering all the characters you introduced in the book one that you now have to revisit and tie up plot threads for
not knowing how to pace the beginning because technically you’re in the middle of the overarching story....but it’s still the beginning of a book
slight downer ending in book one makes for a suboptimal emotional state at the outset of the sequel (for both reader AND writer)
there are....SO many paths to go down that would all resolve certain plot threads...but which one do I pick?!?!?!
not wanting to kill anyone off but knowing the narrative demands sacrifice
looking at your characters’ traumas from book one and going “who did this to you”
where did all the emotions go why is the writing SO FLAT
knowing the reveals and plot points you need to hit but there’s no set order in which everything needs to happen so you just....throw the pieces together and hope for the best
hey yoooooo, does anyone remember what even happened in i can’t fall in love without you? can’t plan the sequel if you don’t know what happened apparently
asking for a friend

When there is an installment completely disrespects the previous installment(s) but still has staunch fans, then the following entry disrespects that installment and the fans of the previous installment complain even though the installment they like is guilty of the exact same thing
Fandom Problem #7111:
When your OTP that you started shipping in the first movie becomes canon in the sequel, and you're stoked for the release of that movie. But then you watch it, and it's... It's so bad. The dynamic acknowledged nothing from the first movie, it comes off like the writer just smashed the two characters together, and the worst part is, bqck in the first movie, the writer did a good job at establishing chemistry and development and reasons for the characters to vibe and get together in a sequel. But they just... Didn't use any of that groundwork. Any of it.
You had ONE JOB, man.
Fandom Problem #14,613:
When people complain about one film in the franchise "sidelining" or even "ruining" a certain character when in fact it's the only film in the series in which that character has a full arc, acts independently, has their beliefs challenged, and shows significant growth, and the subsequent film, which walks back on all of that, is somehow near universally considered to be an "improvement".
Fandom Problem #9233:
When you learn there's a new Devil Wears Prada sequel apparently coming out, and you are looking forward to more discourse on the fashion industry and stuff, because you loved the first movie. So you go into the tag, and of course, true to the tumblr hellscape in 2024, the only content you see is "they're so gay for each other" and "just kiss", all of it just boils down to GAY GAY MORE GAY, and for fuck's sake, as a Tired Old Gay, you wonder why the hell you're even still here. Zero variety.
Fandom Problem #6244:
When a franchise makes a story that's out of character for the franchise itself and everyone enjoys the crap out of it, but several years later the same franchise makes a callback to that story in a much later sequel and straight up retcons the whole thing trying to make it sound ridiculous or that it never happened.
A prime example being Scooby Doo Return to Zombie Island. The first movie was really cool and was highly rated, and then they made a second one trying to tell us everything that happened was indeed staged bullshit with actors and special effects.
