Sertorius! Young and older.

I find myself feeling empathy for pretty much every persona of the Late Republic — but some of them evoke it especially strongly. Sertorius is definitely one of them. I don’t even know exactly what it is about him that draws me in, but reading his story brings up a lot of emotions. I often catch myself wondering how his fate might have turned out if the civil war hadn’t happened.

A talented commander, he was clearly a clever and capable politician too — you don’t keep all those Iberian tribes united for that long without serious skill

As for the drawings themselves, I’m a bit unhappy with the result — but I just don’t have the energy to rework them before the final deadline. I’ve already spent so much time on this.

By the way, I’m not even sure he ever actually wore this kind of armor, despite the fact that he didn’t come from the nobility and started his career in the lower ranks of the army.

Honestly, I was just too lazy to Google it, so… maybe next time. 😅

Also flashback to when I did a presentation on Sertorius and the first thing my prof said to me was: You are really Anti-Pompeian And I was like Yeah, sure, I totally disagree with him politically(?)

Because I couldn't say that I am a leading scholar in the field of Sullarius fanfiction and it is said in Masters of Rome (primary source) that Pompey isn't Sulla's type.......

The Au Ra honestly hadn’t expected to find the Garlean in his own room, muchless the man pouring over the many journals, books and documents that he had. Of course, this was one PART of his room, there was a door that lead to another area with far more books and such as well. Of course, Jacques was wanting to at least try and ‘lighten’ the mood some so he decided to poke a bit of fun.

If anything else maybe he could get the guy to crack a smile or at least laugh... but... nope. Then again he couldn’t blame Sertorius for being as he was... and he was at least becoming more understanding with the days that followed their first meeting. Jacques walked over and moved over to one particular section of the books and traced a clawed finger over one before he pulled it out “Was more just trying to get you to at least liven up a bit. But that stick in your ass runs pretty deep so...”

A low snort came as he held the Journal out for the man, a more than familiar name on it... Asina’s documented reports “But even I’m sure you’re not that stupid to know what I’m talking about. Even I have a type of person that I tend to lean more towards whether it’s for companionship or something more...”

Quintus Sertorius & Diana

Although he was strict and severe with his soldiers, Sertorius was considerate to the natives, and made their burdens light despite financial strain in his war effort. This was likely partially pragmatic, as Sertorius had to retain the goodwill of the native Iberians if he had any chance of winning the war. Sertorius' most famous strategy to this end was his white fawn, a present from one of the natives that he claimed communicated to him the advice of the goddess Diana, who had been syncretized with a native Iberian deity.

Sertorius would obscure information from military reports, claim Diana had told him of said information through the fawn in his dreams, and then act accordingly to further this belief.
