Let musicians just make music maybe?

Recently I was on tiktok (as I am every waking moment) and I noticed one of my favorite bands has an account now. The post that showed up on my fyp was of them promoting their new album, but the tone was weird like 

hey remember me? Remember this one song? please listen to our new stuff its good I swear!

And its strange to put a face to their music, because they arent really the type of band to build an audience on their appearance. But, it made me feel guilty like, who is the manager who is telling you to inform the youngins about your band this way. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t know about a new album from them otherwise, I don’t follow them on anything, it probably just would have shown up one day my spotify radios. So I get why they’re promoting, but it just makes me sad because it doesn’t seem geniune? 

It seems like in order to be famous now you have to not just be an artist but also be an influencer. I saw a post somewhere (probably tiktok) about the differences between content creators, influencers, and celebrities. Basically how content creators make posts for their audience, influencers want to sell you something, and celebrities are a tier above the other two, their fame is brought on in more traditional media. Lately we’ve been seeing people who I would consider celebrities really, to make their way onto tiktok because thats where the audience is. 

Media changes and what not. I guess they’ve got to go where the people are. But can someone just get them a really fun graphics person? I like pretty pictures, just put it on tiktok and I shall be notified. 

This is in no way a dig to smaller artists who promote on tiktok, because I’ve found cool bands through there, but also I can see the empty in their eyes when they don’t really wanna be on there. I’m just going to start buying tickets to shows by the bunch because everyone is making be feel super guilty that they’re doing little dances on tiktok so people will show up for them :(
