so in the interests of avoiding housework and job hunting nonsense I did in fact sit down to write today

and I was gonna work on one of the actual posted WIPs on AO3 since they've been lingering for years at this point

(I have actually been working on ibhww as illustrated by the soulmate rambling the other day, & iafy & another chapter of they have hung my heart with a sunset, and some Mass Effect stuff, this summer writing thing has been pretty delightful)

and instead of ANY of that, I have been putting words into a weird (non-urban) fantasy/politics/arranged marriage AU that is nowhere remotely near seeing the light of day which means it will not help with the *it's nice to actually finish something* braining anytime in the foreseeable future

it is kind of fun writing exclusively from not-Alec's POV tho, absolutely no one is right about what's going on in that boy's head even if I'm the only who can tell and thus finds it hilarious even though everyone else is stressed out 😅

do you still like shadowhunters?

I do! I was working on some Shadowhunters fic today, in fact, but nothing is ready for posting.

Specifically, I was working on a prompt fill for an epilogue ficlet, and reworking an old wing!fic attempt to see if I'd figured out another way to make it work.

None of my old hyperfixations ever die, y'all, it is very easy to resurrect them and inspire incoherent flailing and feelings and fic sketching. But I feel weird about posting all the bits and bobs that aren't ever actually full scenes or stories though, (especially since they do occasionally get a: where's the rest of it? comment, and that feels bad) so I'm aware most of my fandoming is pretty invisible.

I write a lot! It's fun! I have hundreds of thousands of words that I never post because they're just not fully realized thoughts or whatever. Artists don't usually post their warm-ups, but that doesn't mean we're not still interested in the things.

I am more than happy to meta or babble, or post some WIP fic!sketches or something more often, I'm just never sure what people want to engage with? Like, it feels awkward to post: today I thought about angels in about three different fandoms, it was fun!

I can try and start doing that if y'all want, but if it's just shouting into the void it's more fun to write nonsense & id!fic for myself, yk?

oh no I'm having the vaguest recollection

something with Alec and a field of flowers and his... grandmother? And I can't remember if I read it or wrote it or WHERE IT IS FROM but there's this really vivid feeling with it so I'd like to riff off it in the current prompt I'm staring at blankly but I can't if I can't FIND IT AGAIN to get a better idea of what it was I liked so much about it (and ask/provide credit if needed) ARGH

so @theherocomplex tagged me for WIP Wednesday yesterday, and obviously it’s not Wednesday anymore, but what-the-fuck-ever, time is an illusion and also I’m really mad at this WIP that was supposed to be a less-than-1000-words-Cinderella-riff and is now over 2k and maybe half-way done if I’m lucky SO WHATEVER HERE YOU GO

It was going to be a long night. 

Merchant's daughters kept trying to flirt with him, eyelashes blackened to make it easier to flutter them in his direction. (Alec danced, here and there, but carefully not the waltz, and never twice with the same person.) The nobles that had already learned he never flirted back were trying instead to impress him with their practicality or wit, stopping him for a quick word by the refreshments, or by one of the balcony doors that were cracked just enough to let shivers of the cold outside air into the over-heated ballroom.

At least a few of them had suspicions, or hopes, he wasn't sure which, and had aimed their sons at him this time. He danced with them too, because he could, tonight, without it necessarily meaning anything.

He wished he could let it mean something.

And then, almost late enough to be treading the line between fashionable and rude, a warlock swanned his way through the main doors as if he had every right to be there.

The fact that he did hadn't been enough for a warlock to attend in almost a hundred years.

The whole room paused for just a moment, looking up at him at the top of the stairs. He lifted his chin, just a notch, claiming their stares as his due even as he entirely dismissed their judgement, and descended to the main floor more gracefully than any royal had ever managed. 

Alec couldn't remember how to breathe.

Hey! It’s the same nonny who asked about your dislike on the Alicante storyline. I always disliked it too but I could never point my finger on it exactly. And YES! I hate the shows story line, or at least how fast they take it. Like Alec and Magnus got married in! Three! Months! After breaking up TWICE!! Idk it just annoys the crap out of me. Every time I write a fic about them I have to extend the shows timeline to almost 3 years But anyway not really a question. Lol

There’s a thing I’ve talked about before, about the importance of the intangible in long form storytelling, which is relevant here, so!

(Buffy spoilers, I guess? It’s been like twenty-five years, you’ll all survive, I assume.)

@f-f-podcast is doing a Buffy miniseries, and they were talking about the “reveal” of Angel as a Vampire in s1, and how it’s on like... episode 7? Which isn’t that long, in screentime (maybe five hours?) but when originally watching the show, you honestly felt every day of that month or so.  Even more so? In s2 before they sleep together there’s this really heavy sense of finally when they’re together on screen, and when you’re watching it week to week that works because you’ve been waiting for a year for this

when you’re bingeing it later it’s less than 20 hours

What’s really important though, in terms of the effectiveness of the story when you’re watching it, is that for the people making the show it’s been a year.

They’ve known each other and worked together, and that time informs their performances, and their chemistry, and it’s stupid to waste that by pretending that time doesn’t exist in the story.

So not only is the timeline in Shadowhunters stupid in a narrative level, it’s wasting the performances the actors are giving, and the way they’ve changed and developed during the three years they’ve worked together. GIVE THEM THAT ON SCREEN, use it.

It makes a better story.

So I’ve been trying for months now to write a thing for Jace in SH 1x4/1x5 because I get what he’s doing (I’ve meta’d about it a bunch, even, since people asked) but I just cannot get the ficlet to work, and I’d like to actually continue with my coda-fic rewatch/rewrite and maybe even get to season 2 some day (some daaaaaay) which will never happen if I’m still staring at this one

/also, side note, Alec really wasn’t playing hard to get Magnus, he said ‘yes’ but ‘not this instant’ which is not really intended to be discouraging

hello again! structural critique v 'real people' anon again. just wanted to apologize--due to character limit, i wasn't as clear as I hoped. i 110% agree w/ you and found the anons' hostile attitude confusing and obnoxious, but in hopes there were either onlookers or even some of the anons who might listen, i was hoping to point out to them you aren't 'attacking their fave' at all, and that's not what critical analysis is about. i now realize that's not how it came across w/o context!

And I wanted to make sure that anyone following the weirdness that is my inbox today didn’t for one second think that they needed to do that when anons like that other one show up

You don’t have to respond “politely” or “in good faith” when that’s not how you’re approached in the first place

You don’t have to respond at all, if you don’t want to, you don’t owe anyone that.

And it’s a lot easier to deal with people if you remember that
