She’d been messing with her earring for a while now, and it was a mannerism Lance didn’t usually notice in Adira. She touched herself about as often as she let other people touch her. It took a while before he realized that her hair was caught in her earring. The gentle tugging must be driving her crazy.

Fortunately for Lance, he had earned permission to touch her whenever he wanted. He respected that, and used his secret power sparingly. Strolling up, his hands behind his back, he bowed when he reached her. “Allow me.”

His hands came up and he gently freed her earring from the lock of hair it had become entangled in.

The Opal Theory

My friend @shadowweirdo has a theory that the reason why Varian looks so different from Quirin is because of the opal. We see Quirin get blasted by the opal’s magic in the flashback. (s2e1) It could be entirely plausible to say that the opal’s magic contributed to Varian’s physical features.

ie: black hair / blue streak , pale skin , blue eyes ; all of which look like a humanized version of the rocks.

The rocks are destructive, and so is Varian. Barring his status as the s1 villain aside, he’s clumsy, has a penchant for bad luck, and somehow, someway his inventions tend to destroy everything around him. Even the biggest rock formation in Corona turned up smack dab in the middle of Varian’s house of all places. The rocks completely destroyed Old Corona without a trigger.

More than anywhere else, they grew in Varian’s village, so much so that the entire populace had to evacuate.

Not to mention that Varian speaks FOR the rocks in Rapunzel’s prophetic dreams. Each time she dreams about the rocks, Varian is there. The rocks follow him, react along with him, and his anger towards her mirrors that of the rocks’ destruction as they moved towards Corona proper.

Varian is also the only one (besides Adira, who we KNOW is from the Dark Kingdom and connected to the rocks and opal) to tell Rapunzel to “Face her Destiny”, and we all know that Rapunzel’s destiny ties in directly to the rocks.

In essence, because of the traces of opal magic passed down from Quirin to Varian, thus effecting Varian’s physical appearance, the rocks see Varian as “one of them”. They use his visage to speak to Rapunzel, creating yet another mirror between Varian and Rapunzel: the sun and the moon.

it was times like this when she wished her hair still had its healing abilities. she looked at Adira with concern as the stain only grew. rapunzel quickly rushed over and looked at the hunk of wood.

“Adira!” Eugene cried out, voice pitching high as he pushed himself to be faster than the evil, small version of Rapunzel’s best friend chasing him with a dinner knife. Who knew a small child could almost out run him. “Thank fates you are here! Long story short, they got turned into kids and we have to get them to turn this damn top but one of them has gone completely savage and I think she said something about trying to stab me!” He turned his attention back to the little girl chasing him with a wicked gleam in her eye. “Cassandra, put the knife down!”

X: Let me struggle to remember the parent accounts I have affection for

You can count the number of times I’ve interacted with @icxolation on one hand, because... well, you can only make so many interactions where Eugene needles her over “and how are we related by marriage again...? Rapunzel’s mother or father?”

BUT they also have an Adira - wonderful Adira, strong and mighty! @shadowweirdo be that Adira. And they have exercised every restraint by not knocking Eugene’s teeth out when he tries to serenade both her and Lance. Or do stupid things like tell them about the rhythm method, because he’s not ready to be a Godfather/Uncle yet, or ask her dumb questions about her war paint, or does anything whatsoever in the name of “helping” them both.

I have real affection for them and how they write - and one day I’ll work out how to write with them without Eugene being so very... Eugene about it all. (Early Eugene. S1 Eugene. He’s growing up lately. I should do more of that.)
