So, it started with watching the Ghost and Mrs. Muir - the sitcom from the late ‘60′s, not the movie - and falling slightly in love with Edward Mulhare’s performance of that stranger to political correctness, Captain Daniel Gregg. Don’t get me wrong, Rex Harrison’s performance in the ‘40′s is what hooked me into the story in the first place, but Mulhare’s version had the time to grow.
Any way, back to the shake (the whole reason for this post); interested in finding more Mulhare content I discovered an old ‘What’s My Line?’ episode where he was one of the panelists. It was St. Patrick’s Day (it should be somewhere if we’re gonna be making Shamrock Shakes towards the end of August), and so the theme wasn’t a hard one to guess. After half an hour of meeting and listening to different individuals whose professions were based in the old country (one particular man grew and sold shamrocks) I suddenly found that I had a craving for the shake that I hadn’t had in years.
This recipe I altered only a little; adding a third cup of ice cream to give it that real smoothiness, while making homemade whipped cream. Which, if you also want to make your own whipped cream (you should, it tastes way better than store-bought and is super easy to make) be sure to have heavy cream on hand. A milk and butter substitute won’t cut it for this unfortunately.
As for topping the shake with the homemade whipped cream, I find those ever-purposeful zip-lock bags a wonder. Cut a slit as big or small as you want, and then if you want to give it that star-tipped shape cut two small triangles into the slit you’ve already cut, the slit being the base of the triangle.
If you decide to go with that third cup of ice cream I would suggest upping the amount of green food coloring to maybe 13-15. I didn’t and fell that the shake came out a little . . . pale? looking.
If, like me, you don’t have a blender, using a mixer works just fine. Just be sure you have a bowl that can handle it.
Ingredients for the whipped cream:
1 pint (2 cups) of heavy cream
1/4 cup of granulated sugar
Directions for the whipped cream:
Mix the heavy cream and vanilla extract.
Gradually add in the sugar, continuing to mix until there are peaks. Don’t over mix though, you can turn it into butter.
Ingredients for the shake:
2 - 3 cups of vanilla ice cream
10 drops+ green food coloring
Directions for the shake:
Mix all the ingredients in a blender and blend. If you don’t have a blender (like me) you can use a mixer. It works just as well.
Pour into two glasses, top it with whipped cream and sprinkles (if you have any), and above all pace yourself! Enjoy ;)
