Warning for Character Death
(Read on AO3)
“There’s something following us,” Raphael says quietly, pulling himself a bit closer to Ragnor to whisper the words without being overheard by, presumably, whatever is following them.
Ragnor tenses ever-so-slightly. He’s made his fair share of enemies over the centuries, a fair share being entirely Magnus’ fault, and he can only imagine who - or what - may be following him now for some devious end.
“What is it?” Ragnor asks, not looking behind them yet.
“A bird,” Raphael says.
“A… bird?” Ragnor repeats.
“Shut up, I know how it sounds. But I didn’t say anything until I was certain - this isn’t just a regular bird. It’s definitely, very specifically, following us,” Raphael insists.
“Is it a crow?” Ragnor asks, the tension already melting from his posture.
“How did you-”
“Johannes! Quick lurking, you’re putting Raphael off,” Ragnor says with a raised voice, still not bothering to turn around. The Crow in question wastes no time flying over to land on his shoulder.
“You know the crow?” Raphael says, dumbfounded. “Of course you do. Why wouldn’t you?”
“He’s my familiar,” Ragnor explains, even though it’s never come up before and just stating that fact doesn’t explain much at all.
“I’ve never seen him before now,” Raphael points out.
“Yes, well, we do tend to get on each other’s nerves sometimes so we go our separate ways every so often. He isn’t one of those, ‘follow-you-around, attached-at-the-hip’ sort of familiars you see in modern media,” Ragnor elaborates, but there’s a tone of fondness to his voice even as he elaborates on the ways the two of them barely get along. “Nice to know you’re still alive.”
The crow, in response, caws loudly in his ear.
“Yes, I know I could sense if you died, I was being sentimental.” Ragnor sighs. “A mistake I won’t make again,” he mutters, which earns him a light peck to his shoulder.
Ragnor notices the way Raphael just looks warily at the crow as if it might be some sort of trick.
“He comes around when he can sense I’m weak,” Ragnor admits. “My magic is generally stronger when he’s near, and anything I get from him - which can really only be feathers and occasionally blood, lest I ruin his quality of life significantly - is particularly potent in any potions I brew.”
Raphael turns his wary gaze from Johannes to Ragnor now. “You told me you were fine after that summoning,” Raphael says, his tone accusatory.
“I… may have exaggerated. Fine is a relative term anyway.”
“You’re impossible,” Raphel sighs. ”Let’s go. The sooner you’re home to rest the better, apparently.” Raphael mutters something else under his breath that Ragnor doesn’t quite catch, though he picks up on a few choice words like ‘stubborn’ and ‘hopeless’ that he’s positive Raphael says louder than the others for that very purpose.
Ragnor can’t be mad about it, not really. Not when he has a good friend who cares and a familiar who will always have his back, both looking out for him when he needs them the most.
---
Johannes sticks around for a little while, and even after he finally takes his leave from Ragnor he comes back a bit more frequently than he used to. Raphael sees him a few times, and he’s usually the only sign that Ragnor is wearing himself out with overextending his magic or simply not taking care of himself with enough sleep. At first the familiar keeps his distance until Ragnor is alone, but more and more frequently he comes right to Ragnor while Raphael is around.
It doesn’t take long before Johannes begins flying right up to Ragnor without hesitation as long as Raphael is the only other person around.
“He trusts you,” Ragnor tells Raphael one day. Ragnor sounds equal parts pleased and surprised, as if even as he says it he doesn’t quite believe it. “He likes you. In all my years, I’ve never seen him so at ease around someone who isn’t me.”
It isn’t lost on either of them that this includes other warlocks, as well as people who have been in Ragnor’s life far longer than Raphael has.
“He has good taste,” Raphael says, though the expression in his eyes is heavier than the attempted lighthearted dismissal of the realization.
“I trust you, too,” Ragnor adds. He doesn’t have to - it’s one of those things they both know without speaking - but it’s nice to hear just the same.
---
Raphael is asleep when he hears the incessant knocking at his window. At first, he doesn’t think much of it beyond the immediate annoyance. He nearly goes back to sleep until he remembers that his window is many, many floors up in the hotel and nothing should be knocking at it, considering it doesn’t have a fire escape leading up to it or even a proper window ledge.
Alarmed, he makes his way over to the window and listens to the sharp tap of something hitting the glass over, and over, and over again. It’s still daylight and he can’t exactly open the curtain to look out properly, but he does risk pushing the curtain open at the corner to get the quickest glimpse at whatever is at the window despite the instant headache he knows it’ll cause.
The flash of black he sees doesn’t register at first. A bird? A bird. A very persistent bird, who--
“Johannes?”
Why would the crow be here, now?
“Ragnor isn’t here!” Raphael shouts through the window, unsure if the crow can hear him through the thick glass. The knocking pauses for a moment, then picks up again at twice the speed, making it clear he isn’t going anywhere.
“Dammit,” Raphael curses, bracing himself with a deep breath before pushing his hand past the curtain to unlatch and open the window. He knows he shouldn’t but something about the insistence of the crow doesn’t sit right with him. The action takes all of two seconds but the skin on the top of his hand begins to burn from the sunlight which hits it immediately, despite his best efforts to avoid it.
Johannes flies in and immediately lands on Raphael’s shoulder. He’s never done that before. He’s flown to Ragnor while Ragnor is with Raphael, but never once to Raphael himself.
Raphael’s unease grows.
“Ragnor isn’t here,” Raphael repeats.
The crow nods in understanding.
“...but you’d know that, because you always know where Ragnor is.”
Another inclination of the crow’s head, followed by a slow, dawning realization that settles heavily in Raphael’s gut.
“Johannes, where is Ragnor?”
The crow lowers his head and nuzzles it against Raphael’s neck, and Raphael knows. He prays he’s wrong, that he’s misunderstood something along the way, but he knows that he hasn’t.
"Am I supposed to take care of you now, or is it the other way around?" Raphael asks, bringing a hand up to stroke the bird's feathers.
As much as he doesn’t want to accept it, Raphael knows that wherever he is, Ragnor is dead.
Malec resting in Central Park after Pride, until the night has fallen and they can see the stars...
This is the art I drew for the June cover of the @malecdiscordserver ! I did a few different versions for Pride, since June is Pride month, and an animation. The night-time one is also the entry for my @shadowhunterbingo Stargazing square.

Well that is all for my Bingo for this year! I had so much fun. Kinda sad I only got a bit over half of my squares done but hopefully next year I will get a full card done.
Thank you to the wonderful @brightasstars. I believed that she beta’d 90% of my fics for this event. She is amazing to have in your corner with her constant support and motivation. I couldn’t of finished most of these fics without her help.
“Don’t give me that look,” Jace smirks, “we all know you’re the one who rules this school with an iron fist.”
“If that were true, I’d have a much easier time of getting you to go on a date with me.”
A million years ago I promised @miss-shiva-adler I would expand on this fic… and then I didn’t :). It’s outlined and everything but it’s not being written for now, so I thought: why not share the soundtrack? Heavily inspired by 90’s/early 2000’s high school cheerleading movies.

Alec swipes through the slides on the central screen, looking for the new schematic. It’s much too fast for anyone else to register the equations and formulas and preliminary sketches, but Alec knows what each says without stopping because, well because he’s fucking Ironman. He’s the smartest man in the room. (2,574 words)
the inevitability cloak: Ravenclaw (stargazing), Slytherin (friends to lovers), Gryffindor (meet ugly), Hufflepuff (Christmas)
It doesn't matter to which house he belongs, or what the Sorting Hat will say;
Because despite whatever happens, Alec falls in love anyway
'Who loves who' and friendships never stay the same;
But time after time, for him, all he sees is Magnus Bane
(or: what happens when the author can’t decide which Hogwarts house would get Alec Lightwood) - 6,015 words
in the conservatory with a candlestick: pandemonium
Malec, Clizzy, Jimon
Jace pretends he definitely absolutely certainly does not have a thing for the weekend DJ, while Simon is into the club’s bouncer – who seems to genuinely hate him.
Clary just wants to take things to the next level with her favorite server, while Isabelle’s too terrified to mess up and lose what she has with the bartender.
And Magnus has been in love with the club’s primary investor and silent partner since the first day they met, while Alec is head-over-heels for the club’s owner – who only wants to be friends.
But none of that matters. What matters is – who killed the night manager?
(The Clue AU no one asked for.) - 12,490 words
(i keep on hoping) we’ll eat cake by the potion: witch/familiar
Loosely based on this prompt: “hot goth in the woods that keeps answering the door and sighing and going ‘no I’m not the witch, he lives over there’ and points across the street to a dazzling pretty boy wearing a gold waistcoat who’s waving excitedly at them. this happens 268 times a month” - 10,522 words
the one wherein Alec is a TSA agent: free space
The first time it happens, it’s unintentional.
(Every time after that, it’s embarrassingly intentional.)
Alec is behind the conveyor belt, just like he always is, listening to Jace yell, “Anything larger than a cell phone, folks. Keys, wallets, and don’t forget those belts.”
Another day, another TSA shift. Another dude trying to smuggle a snake onto a plane, probably. (1,391 words)
the one wherein they piss of the Greek gods: Artemis: Hunt & Chastity (hunt); Aletheia: Truth (truth serum); Mnemosyne: Memory (memories); Chronos: Time (time travel); Ananke: Necessity (fake relationship); Dolos & Apate: Treachery and Deception (jealousy)
Alec and Magnus maybe accidentally upset the Greek gods when they may or may not be inappropriate on holy ground (40,854 words)
it’s you that I’ve been waiting to find: soulbond
The initials appear on his neck when he’s twelve. The MB is drawn in thick black lines, long and prominent. They’re displayed more prominently than most others he’s seen, and Alec feels a pride he doesn’t fully understand. Someday, he’ll love so openly, be loved so openly, and whenever he touches his fingers to his neck, a thrill runs through him. (500 words)
powerful with a little bit of tender: vampire!Alec
Bored, self-involved vampires, Alec remembers saying. Now though, with the sound of Magnus’ pulse pounding in his ears, he thinks, What the hell were you thinking? (500 words)
right behind you anywhere you go: kidnapping
Bruises mark Magnus' arms, his shirt has been torn, and the necklaces that still hang off his neck are broken and jagged. Something in his chest seizes and Alec knows without a shadow of a doubt that he can’t be left alone with this psychopath because the Clave won’t look too kindly at the things Alec is going to do. (500 words)
cities come and cities go: doctor AU
“I was thinking,” Alec says as he grips the railing on the inside of the TARDIS to prevent himself from falling, “that maybe we can bring some people along for this next one?”
Magnus slams the handlebar down and the TARDIS stops shaking. “Which people?” he asks.
“Jace and Izzy,” Alec answers. “But just one trip.”
One. Alec isn’t really into sharing his Doctor. (500 words)
Clary/Maia:
subtle fire beneath my skin: long distance (RATED E)
She waits a while for a reply and has to hold back a laugh when Maia sends: What are you wearing?
Well I’m in class, so nothing fun, Clary types back. But her smile falls when she reads Maia’s next message:
I asked you a question, Clarissa.
“Oh,” Clary accidentally whispers aloud, heart racing. She’s sitting in one of the back rows of the lecture hall so no one is close enough to hear her, but she flushes slightly anyway. (1,272 words)
still think about her plenty: fix-it
Clary falls in love with Maia early into her freshman year in college and then stays there for four more years. They’re friends-of-friends and then they’re casual friends, but they’re never more than friends. Maia has a handful of semi-serious boyfriends but never any girlfriends, so Clary’s never ready to take that chance, even though sometimes they stand a little too close, stare a little too long. (500 words)
