Underrated thing about reading fanfic in a language you've just started learning is how charming it is to discover extremely bite-sized pieces of angst or whump.

If I read in English or French, I'll get through a 7k fic in maybe 20 minutes, but I've been making my extremely slow way through a 7k Chinese fic for days and it's like. Three paragraphs of the Character in Extreme Pain at a time. You'd think it would be frustrating but it's actually a very pleasant experience 10/10.

The 2026 Gender Census is now open!

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!

Funniest thing about watching more drama is starting to recognize the supporting actors.

The Disguiser was full of them of course but Zhan Zhao has a suprising number of actors from NiF and Disguiser too, I'm like "Princess Jingyang?? Shen Zhui?? Liang Zhongchun??"

(Looking at their pages, some of these guys have been in a massive number of dramas, always in support roles... It's sad that there's no room for anyone who doesn't look like an idol in the main casts)
