summary:
The Normandy’s current location isn’t listed on the map, but the rest of it is accurate, as up to date as it was before they crash-landed. The priority tag spins around Earth, the last mark left on the map after months of seemingly endless missions.
Kaidan knows immediately that he’s leaving Earth tagged. The purpose is different— a final battle versus a final destination— but the end result is the same. They have to make it back home, to whatever awaits them this time.
or, the war is over, and the Normandy finds its way home.

Maybe he missed that constant adrenaline, but everything now seemed trivial compared to those last months before the end. How does cleaning the house compare to saving the galaxy? As much as he wished for it in the moment, he was struggling with the peace and domesticity.
New fluff Shenko fic up! In which Kaidan struggles to find his place in the world after the war, but with a little help from Mom, he'll be ok. Just a sweet fluff Shenko fic with a happy ending for those two. Full fic below.
Lowkey inspired by how Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez lol. ____________________ It was cold on the deck. Kaidan’s breath was visible in the air as he overlooked the still lake. Autumn was nearly over; a few fire-red and golden leaves lingered on the baring trees as evidence. At dusk, the lake had a special way of feeling like a dream, with fog creeping in through the tree-line; its calm waters patiently listening. Kaidan spent many evenings on this deck with his father just before he enlisted—asking for advice as he tried to figure out his place in life. He wished his dad was here tonight. But his parents had gifted the lakeside cabin to him and moved to a smaller property in the city to help rebuild. Something productive to do in their retirement, they told him. He missed those talks now more than ever. Once the war ended, it was hard for Kaidan to find his place in the world again. After all that loss. After the Normandy crew had done so much. Fighting each day without knowing if they’d see the next. Maybe he missed that constant adrenaline, but everything now seemed trivial compared to those last months before the end. How does cleaning the house compare to saving the galaxy? As much as he wished for it in the moment, he was struggling with the peace and domesticity. The fog had now meandered to the border of the water. He reached in his pocket and pondered the velvet box. This normalcy was what he wanted, what he asked for every day of the war. So why couldn’t he just enjoy it? His mom told him it’s his karma—that everything works out in the end and that it would be alright. Their being alive was evidence of that. And in his heart Kaidan knew his place was right here. But tonight his mind kept roaming to the what-ifs. He looked to the water for advice. Its stillness was its only response. “Yeah,” Kaidan sighed and pushed off the edge of the deck. His breath suspended in the air behind him as he made his way back into the house. She was in the bath upstairs; her red hair slicked back as she lay in the steaming water. It had become something of a ritual for her as the weather got colder. Helped with the pains and aches. The last six months since she woke from her coma were filled with endless physical therapy, and this was one way to help loosen all of her muscles. Kaidan walked up and kissed her softly on the head. “Hey,” she smiled and looked up at him. “Goodness, you look frozen. You were outside long?” “Yeah, just a bit. I’m fine.” Shepard gave him a curious look, but didn’t pry. They each had their own ways of handling the aftermath of the war. “Well, you could always hop in here to warm up,” she replied, swashing the bath water a little. “And get third-degree burns?” he joked back. “It’s not that hot,” she rolled her eyes and smirked. “Big baby.” Kaidan chuckled and sat on the floor next to the tub. He gazed at her. She was still the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. The years could never take that away. Her scars this time around were prominent throughout her skin, unlike her cybernetic scarring in ’85. He liked it better this way. It gave him more places to kiss—to be thankful for. “What’s up?” Shepard moved to the edge of the bath and looked at him, a slight concern on her face. “Nothing, just taking you in.” “Kaidan…” “Honest.” Shepard gave him a look but didn’t push it. He reached over and took her hand. They stared at each other in silence, fingers intertwined. “Not the happily ever after you imagined, huh?” Shepard spoke after some time. She looked at her body and the scars and the replaced limb. “Don’t say that,” he grabbed her face and pulled it toward him. His kiss was genuine. Shepard put up a front at first, then gave in. It was slow and sweet and so very Kaidan. She leaned back and rested her head on his forearm, which sat on the edge of the tub. He stroked her cheek. “You’re still the most gorgeous girl in the galaxy to me. You know that." “Alright,” Shepard snorted and kissed his forearm. “Mr. Romantic.” It was true. He loved Shepard beyond compare. And every day she chose to wake up next to him, Kaidan was beyond thankful and he wanted her to know it. But as the months rolled on, anxiety got the better of him. Good things had a habit of never lasting long—and things had been really good lately. Could life really be as simple as this? Waking up next to the person you love and just enjoying it? No strings attached? No Reapers or Collectors on the horizon threatening taking it away from you? Shepard studied his face as he was lost in thought. “Wanna talk about it?” He focused back on her and sighed. “It’s just something that’s been on my mind for some time and I’m not sure how to… how to bring it up.” “Oh,” Shepard spoke, her face suddenly deflated. “Not like that,” Kaidan let out one of his husky chuckles and squeezed her hand. But Shepard still looked unsure. “I love you Shepard.” “Okay… I love you too, Kaidan.” “And you know it’s been a bit of a struggle for me adjusting to this ‘peaceful’ life,” he continued. “That makes two of us.” Characteristically Shepard, she had been eager to get back to work within a few months after waking—to do something other than simmer in her pain and current ineptitude—but the Alliance ordered her to take time off, indefinitely, to recover and heal her extensive injuries. That also extended to Kaidan, who was listed as her primary care giver. Kaidan wasn’t the only one who felt like a tiger kept in a cage. “That said,” he took a deep inhale, “I’m trying, Shepard. I’m really trying. To just enjoy the present. Here. With you. And not take any of it for granted.” Shepard smiled and squeezed his hand back. But she sensed where this was going. “I appreciate that, Kaidan. And I’m so thankful for you. But I don’t ever want you to feel obligated to stay here with me—” “That’s not what this is about,” he cut her off before she could continue. “You know I’m never leaving your side again.” She pursed her lips to the side, but didn’t press on. Kaidan let out a sigh. Why was he so nervous? This was something he’s needed to do since ‘86. Just rip the bandaid off, he told himself. He cleared his throat and wiped his palms on his jeans. “Shepard,” he reached into his pocket. “You are the love of my life. I knew that from the moment you walked in on the bridge of the SR-1. That it was only ever going to be you.” He took the box out of his pocket. He fiddled the opening ridge with his thumb. “I don’t know what the future holds for us, but I think after taking down an entire army of sentient alien robots that we can probably handle what it throws at us next.” Shepard’s eyes were on the box now. Her mouth went slack. “So, Amidala Shepard, will you marry me?” Kaidan opened the box. His mother’s simple emerald engagement ring was inside. Shepard’s eyebrows shot up. A big smile spread across her face. And she let out a laugh; a big, hearty laugh. Kaidan waited, “…Is that a yes?” Shepard simply hugged him, wetting his flannel shirt with sudsy water. She clung around his neck as he returned the embrace; two damaged pieces that still fit perfectly together. “Of course it’s a yes, you idiot,” she smiled into his neck. He could feel her fast heart beating through their hug and smiled back in relief. Kaidan held her like this, savoring every detail of the moment. She was so warm and smelled like home. Shepard was still giggling as he pulled back to look at her. “It’s my mom’s ring,” he said as he took it from its velvet box, “given to her from her mother.” He placed it on Shepard’s finger; he noticed her hand had a slight shake to it. “And now it’s yours,” he smiled proudly, honey eyes gazing into her vivid green. The ring glinted under the warm ambient light of the bathroom. Shepard tilted her hand, mesmerized its beauty. “It’s gorgeous, Kaidan.” “You like it?” “I love it,” Shepard moved to kiss Kaidan. Softly at first, then more thoroughly as his hands roamed down her bare back. “I love you,” she smiled. “I love you too,” he replied between kisses. “So are you going to get in this tub now to celebrate, or do I have to pull you in?” Kaidan chuckled huskily. “Hey, Doc said no heavy lifting, remember?” “Shut up and get in here already.” But Kaidan was already taking off his wet shirt, “Ma’am, yes, ma’am.”
Sleepless
“You’re easy to talk to, Kaidan,” she admitted. He smiled back at her.
“Well I’ll always be here when you need to talk, Commander.”

Kaidan quietly huffed in frustration, pulling up the time on his Omni-tool. It had been over three hours since he had bunked down, and he was beginning to think that sleep just wasn’t going to happen for him tonight. He briefly considered just staying in bed – any rest was better than no rest at all, after all, and with his migraines he wouldn’t be able to take a stimulant later if he crashed – but the idea of spending another minute tossing and turning was enough to drive him insane.
He kicked off his covers with a sigh and quietly made his way to his station in the mess hall; if he couldn’t sleep, he may as well get some work done. Besides, it would look better if he did crash later.
He had expected to find the mess empty – the ship only ran with a skeleton crew at this hour – but as he rounded the corner, he saw Shepard sat at the table. Her hands were wrapped around a mug, and she had a faraway look on her face. He couldn’t help but smile fondly.
Day by day, Kaidan found himself getting to know the woman behind Commander Shepard, as she slowly lowered her walls and allowed herself to just be. A woman who was gentle, inquisitive, sometimes shy, and often deep inside her own head. Who made him feel safe talking about his past and never judged him or pitied him. A woman who was stronger than anyone he had ever met, who had been through the kind of hell that would break or harden anyone else, but she came through the other side still strong, still kind.
(Fic) Made of Steel but Only Human
An old fic from my archives, originally posted on the Mass Effect Kink Meme.
Shepard, Kaidan, and Liara return from the Ardat-Yakshi monastery on Lessus and their first encounter with Banshees. Things are still tense between Shepard and Kaidan after the Citadel Coup, but Kaidan knows Shepard well enough to understand when she's not okay.
Proto-Shenko fluff with a bit of hurt-comfort from the fact it’s post mission.

Allison stayed standing the entire shuttle ride from the surface of Lesuss. Despite being battle-scarred (one rather impressive gouge from the middle of her left thigh to just below her breast) and world-weary with a thousand-yard stare, she gripped onto the bar and held steady through the mild turbulence of atmo. Liara had shot a glance across to Kaidan, trying to read from him what was going on, but he was almost as much at a loss as she was. Three years and a couple of near-death instances would change all but the smallest number of people.
Eventually the Normandy came into view from the windscreen. Kaidan heard Liara let out a sigh of relief, but no similar reaction from Allison. She stayed, stock-still as she had been, until Cortez manoeuvred the shuttle into the docking bay. Only when pressure and air had been returned to the bay, and Cortez had opened the side door, did she move.
Allison moved across the bay in a blink, almost as fast as if she had biotically charged across. While Kaidan and Liara stopped by the weapons bench to start disarmouring, Allison kept going to the elevator and called it down with a firm smack of her hand against the control panel. Her back was to them the entire time it took the elevator to get to the floor, her standing with the same rigid pose as had been on the shuttle.
After Allison stepped onto the elevator and the doors closed behind her, Liara sent Kaidan a look that was part sympathy, mostly questioning. He looked away, focusing on taking off his vambraces. His gauntlets followed, tossed down almost carelessly. One had a long scratch along it, shallow and barely cutting through the paint to the metal below. Not too damaged to be repaired, but would need time and resources, both of which they were short on. Would always be short on until the war ended in one way or another.

Rating: G Relationship: Garrus/Brynn/Kaidan (poly-vee) Chapter Summary: getting to the heart of the matter: hey guys can i date both of you kthanksbye
The room seemed empty at first glance, the holoscreen a few feet ahead blinking idly. As she slowed, however, she heard quiet conversation: the fuzz of a communicator, then the low rumble of Garrus's voice. "Well, you can trust Shepard, sir. If anybody can get the krogan to cooperate, it's her." Brynn's mouth tugged up in a nervous smile—god, even after everything that had happened, here Garrus was, praising her abilities like there had never been any doubt. "She's an old friend of Urdnot Wrex." A fuzzy reply. "I'm sure it will, sir." Then, the noise was gone, and there was just the humming of the ship.
Brynn walked toward where she'd heard the noise, heart speeding up with each step. There was a light thunk, and she looked down as she rounded the corner to see Garrus sitting back on his feet, head tipped up toward her. "Shepard," he said with a smile. "Thought I heard the door open."

finally at the chapter i took a quote from for that edit i made!
Kisses at night
She only kisses him at night.
When most of the crew are dreaming in their pods, when the lights are dimmed and the only sound is the soft humming coming from the ship, he goes to her. It is only then she’ll let him into her room, her bed and through the walls around her.
She’s fierce, but there is a deliberate caution in the beginning, she’s careful not to assume, not to take for granted, careful not to overstep any more boundaries than they already have. She presses her lips to his cheek, sliding her own cheek against his, her nose following his jaw before pressing kisses along it. He takes her head in his hands and kisses her.
At once there is hunger, fingers clutching his shoulders, breathing into his mouth. His hands on her waist, back, face, her gripping and pulling, pushing into him, whispering his name between her breaths. He simply holds her, his mouth keeping up with the pace she’s setting, savoring every moment. She pulls away to catch her breath, her lips red, wet and swollen. He imagines he looks similar. He says her name and leans in to kiss her again. She smiles against his lips. At night, he loves her.
At day, there is nothing. Professional banter and mission-related questions. No secret hand holding beneath the table, no heated gazes or shy smiles. During the day, she is his commander. During the night, well, it varies from night to night who takes control. Deep down it hurts more than it feels good and he should stop it. He shouldn’t let her use him to keep her bed warm, and almost ignore him during the day. But then she starts whispering his name back and it’s over. Where else could he go?
Really Big Gun
Kaidan sat next to Shepard at the bar. He was a few drinks in and feeling pretty good. He could tell that Shepard, by the way she was sitting on the edge of her stool, and missing her mouth with the straw, was too. It wasn’t often that when the ship was docked, they got to go out like this, but when the ship’s captain suggests shore leave, who is he to question it?
He watched as she knocked back the last of her drink, in one large swig. She sat her empty glass back down, probably a little bit too forcefully and looked his way, from out of the corner of her eye.
“You’ve got some catching up to do”, she said, turning the corners of her mouth into a playful grin.
