It's always fun to invent even more backstory misery for Shadow. But at some point it gets just a pinch tragi-comic

Imagine Shadow sitting down after a year of therapy for the Obvious Stuff and thinking he's finally done it, he's finally "conquered therapy" and now he can go back to his "usual life"

And he lets slip that this was somehow both harder and easier than Grandfather's testing and the therapist perks their ears.

"The what?"

"The testing. You know, the (definitely illegal medical procedure or deeply unethical physiological testing)."

And the therapist- mind you they've been his therapist for a year, it's pretty damn difficult at this point for them to lose their cool at the endless wealth of misery Shadow has to offer -the therapist's face just falls. Shadow gets to watch in real time as his good grade in therapy slips away (a normal and achievable thing to strive towards).

"God fucking damnit" Shadow grumbles, "see you next week."
