His eyes were locked on the sidewalk in front of him as he waded through the bustling crowd. The timer at his wrist ticked and counted down as usual and at it’s slow, steady pace. Not only could he hear it, but he could feel it against his skin as its digits crept firmly along.
With his bag slung over his shoulder, the boy sped away from traffic to where the crowd became sparse. He didn’t stop to look where he was going nor did he bother to meet any one person’s gaze until he felt a sharp pain stinging at the inside of his arm. The timer ticked faster. He quickened his own pace to match.
The ticking grew slowly louder and louder and the pain, sharper and sharper by the second. Katsuo sped up as if in an attempt to beat the clock and avoid whoever it was that he was to be bound to. Maybe he could make it home before the timer could stop him, and then, he could be free of——
…The boy came to a sudden halt in horrified disbelief. His dark eyes flicked up at the person standing before him, then back down to his wrist. The ticking had stopped. His time was up.
Balling his hands into fists, he swallowed the lump in his throat and gathered the courage to speak.
“Wh… Who… are you…?”
