Romi or Miah with a hella fever? I can't decide which I would like to see rather...
((Written with @sicklyfeels <3 Kaj and Jason are her characters))
As soon as he finished the show, Kaj was packing up his gear to leave. Normally he’d hang around to watch the other bands play and just enjoy the festival, but right now his boyfriend was waiting for him at the hotel where he’d stayed back to keep an eye on Miah. Kaj’s cousin had gotten sick almost as soon as they’d arrived in the city. They’d taken him to a clinic when his fever climbed past 102 and had been all but written off.
Let him rest, the doctors advised. Fluids, tylenol, come back if his fever breaks 104. Which it hadn’t yet, thankfully, but that didn’t stop it from wavering around the upper end of 103 for the better part of two days.
Once he’d gotten back to the hotel, he unloaded his gear as quickly as he could, carting all of it up to their room a little too hastily. He made it in one piece, though, and he made a beeline to Miah’s half of the hotel suite, where he was still laying in bed while Jason flipped through the channels on the tv.
“Hey,” Kaj greeted. “How’s everything going?”
Jason looked over to the bed where Miah was sleeping. “He’s been out most of the time. I’ve tried getting him to drink, but it’s been hard getting him up.”
“He’s gotta get fluids, though,” Kaj sighed, worriedly running his fingers through his hair.
Jason stood and went to Kaj’s side, giving his hand a squeeze. “Try getting him up. Maybe he’ll cooperate more for you. I’ll go and grab a cold gatorade for him.”
“Thanks, babe,” Kaj said, standing on tiptoes to kiss Jason’s cheek before he left. He sat down on the edge of Miah’s bed, reaching up to give his shoulder a gentle shake. “Hey, Miah. Wake up, bruv, you’ve gotta drink somethin’.”
Miah’s eyes peeled open, but his gaze was glassy and unfocused. He started to fall back asleep almost immediately, and Kaj had to shake him again to rouse him.
“No, c’mon. Wake up, Miah. We have to take your temperature again get some liquid in you. Jason’s grabbing a drink for you, so you’ve gotta wake up.”
Miah groaned, but he let Kaj pull him upright, leaning heavily against his cousin’s side. Kaj could feel the heat rolling off him, his worry spiking. Jason returned, handing Kaj the bottle of gatorade and taking a seat on Miah’s other side.
“Here we go. C’mon, take a few sips, and I’ll let you lay back down.” He opened up the bottle, holding it to Miah’s lips. Miah took a few obedient sips before he turned his head away, but it was better than nothing. Jason took the bottle from Kaj’s hands as Kaj eased Miah back down onto the bed.
“I want Dodah,” Miah murmured, curling in on himself as he shivered. Kaj frowned, looking up at Jason for a second before looking back down at Miah.
“She’s back home, Miah. M’sorry, I’d take you to her if I could.”
“We’ll be heading home in a couple days,” Jason added, giving Miah’s shoulder a squeeze. “You’ll get to see her soon.”
Miah’s chest jolted with a small, hiccuping sob. “I don’t feel good.”
“I know, Miah. It’s okay,” Kaj said comfortingly. He gave his shoulder a pat, looking uncertainly at Jason. His boyfriend sighed, running a hand over his dreads.
“He’s really hot, Kaj…”
“I know. Should we take him back to the hospital? They made it sound like he was fine, but he’s clearly not...”
“It’s only been a couple days,” Jason said, but it was clear that he was getting worried, too.
“He’s not getting better,” Kaj argued. “At all. His fever should have broken by now, right? They could at least keep him at the hospital for a little while, give him some fluids and fever reducers...”
They both turned to Miah again, watching as he shivered and heaved little tearless sobs.
“Maybe we should take him back,” Jason said.
“Yeah,” Kaj agreed. He put his hand on Miah’s head for a moment, then stood up and grabbed Miah’s backpack, checking inside it to make sure it contained Miah’s inhaler. “C’mon. Let’s get him into the van,” he said. “That bloody clinic is gonna help him whether they want to or not.”
