There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted who disappeared into those shadows.

I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here, our country moving closer to its own truth and dread, its own ways of making people disappear.

I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods meeting the unmarked strip of light— ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise: I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.

And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these to have you listen at all, it's necessary to talk about trees.

Silent Killers Anthology Review

I had posted a review on Amazon for this spactacular 5 star read. I wanted to get into more detail here. This anthology features many indie authors who collaborated on the awareness of mental illness. All proceeds are donated to mental health reaserch. My good friends and one of the founders of The Black Rose contributed to this anthology, Cherry Shephard, and Pabdora Tolson. This anthology comes with a rather deserved warning. This anthology contains stories that deal with a wide range of mental illness and it may trigger those of us who suffer. This is an excellent read for those who have never suffered mental illness and have loved ones who do, or those who don't know anyone who has suffered, because this anthology gives good representation of what it is like. I recommend the Silent Killers Anthology and support the spread of mental illness awareness, because as a sufferer of depression and anxiety, I know first hand the struggle and the stigma that comes with it. Those of us affected usually suffer in silence, because we may know mentally we are not alone, but we feel deeply that no one understands the level of our internal struggle.
